NinjaTune. C or D?

Sorry, its a broad question. Simply curious what people think about the xen cutters. Now that everybody seems to cringe at the whole trip hop muzakal, where does Tobin, Food, Vadim and the like fit in? Also.. Luke Vibert. Twisted sample pioneer or distasteful cheeze whiz?

A. Honda, Thursday, 19 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Ninja Tune circa 1997 = complete classic. I thought they could do no wrong.

Ninja Tune circa 2001 = home of a couple of classic artists, like Amon Tobin and DJ Food. Many of the rest weren't able to follow through, sadly. (Roots Manuva seems to be pretty fly, though.)

Dan Perry, Thursday, 19 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

eh, i asked this like ten years ago, only i included mowax. anyway ninja tune are classic, as any label that releases the infesticons album and the tried by 12 remix ep would be. plus, last year's excellent dj food, roots ma-noov, kid koala, saul williams, cinematic orchestra, etc etc etc. the xen cuts comp was the only thing i've ever preordered from cdnow. CLASSIC CLASSIC CLASSIC.

ethan, Thursday, 19 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

DJ Vadim in addition to Tobin and Food is excellent. Plug (aka Vibert) was cool; other than that, as Kid 606 so eloquently put it, Luke Vibert can kiss my indie-punk whiteboy ass.
Oh, don't forget, the Antibalas Afrobeat Orchestra record is on Ninja Tune. Props. On the other hand, that Xen box set was fucking awful. Thank god I didn't pay for it.

Dave M., Thursday, 19 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

antibalas have a cool name. it means, like, bulletproof. that's so wicked.

ethan, Thursday, 19 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Atomic Moog 2000! But. I dunno. Seems widdly.

Tracer Hand, Thursday, 19 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Vadim is great... in small doses. His records are tailor-made to be mixed into DJ sets and in this context they shine. Listening to an entire album is a perscription for sleep, IMO.

HOWEVER, a group I neglected to mention that I should have is The Herbaliser! Pure, pure brilliance from every pore! (Haven't heard the most recent, though.)

Dan Perry, Thursday, 19 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

That new Neotropic album is pretty decent too, although not quite in the Ninja Tune-house style. Favourite Ninja Tune album for me still is DJ Food's 'Recipe for Disaster': "Bass City Roller" on that album = medicine for the soul.

Omar, Thursday, 19 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

one year passes...
the xen cuts comp seems to sum up ninja tune perfectly: about seven out the thirty odd are indespensible (herbaliser feat. latryx, vibert, sarah jones, big dada sound, vadim, maybe scruff's ug on a tolerant day) but the rest is taken up with anodyne jazz loops and - god help us - 'smokers' beatz'

Barnaby (Barnaby), Monday, 2 September 2002 09:11 (twenty-three years ago)

ha ha ha ha ha with my recent acquisition of a fifty cent ninja tune promo that includes both THE TERRORIST f best linkin park guest mc ever MOTION MAN and mr scruffs thirty-eighth best single of the nineties GET A MOVE ON i stand by my previous motherfucking opinion, xen cuts is crap though except the first disc

simon trife (simon_tr), Monday, 2 September 2002 09:40 (twenty-three years ago)

i think at this point a linkin park/ninja tune remix album would literally save music!!

simon trife (simon_tr), Monday, 2 September 2002 09:44 (twenty-three years ago)

Mr Scruff is a fucking genius.

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 2 September 2002 12:21 (twenty-three years ago)

just to split hairs; most of the good stuff that got mentioned above came outta big dada, a ninja-sponsored sublabel run by will ashon. prolly the best hiphop label around these days. dunno how much input black+moore have on their releases, but judging on their solid steel show i'd say it's minimal. so be careful abt spreading the respect... as for the rest of ninja, yeah occasional genius but a lotta torpid bleh.

coming soon: king ghidra!!!

bob zemko (bob), Monday, 2 September 2002 16:49 (twenty-three years ago)

Ever since I caught pieces of Amon Tobin's set at Coachella last year I wanted to check out his and his labelmates stuff. Apparently a zen retrospective double disc is on sale.. Just picked it up for 14 bucks. Not bad..

bill stevens (bscrubbins), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 19:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Cold Krush Kuts alone makes me glad NinjaTune exists. is everything they've ever done classic? debatable. but on the whole, more classic than not.

Tobin & Kid Koala are on tour again. or still. BTW.

janni (janni), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 19:22 (twenty-two years ago)

i covet this.
i've always liked the videos they put out.

dyson (dyson), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 19:27 (twenty-two years ago)

i got the Zen DVD but not watched it yet (along with about 20 other music DVDs)

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 20:15 (twenty-two years ago)

did you knock off an hmv or something¿

dyson (dyson), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 20:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Woah Trife likes that Infesticons record!?!? Awesome.

As far as my experience has gone with Ninja Tune, I couldn't say anything less than classic...Herbaliser, Vadim, Food, Antifuckingbalas, Kid the fuck Koala!, Amon jumping jesus on a pogo stick Tobin!?! Probably among the most consistently badass labels I can think of.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 20:51 (twenty-two years ago)

dud. for me ninja tunes was aimless trip hop, failed experiments with MCs, long, long albums full of unmemorable fluff. (name a few *truly* memorable songs?)

i think i was also put off by the artists themselves: bearded, pasty Brits that wanted to straddle a needless space between Aphex-style experimentation, and pop-style trip hop.

paulhw (paulhw), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 20:54 (twenty-two years ago)

haha I had an identity crisis about those fucking comps on my blog recently. not me at my prettiest.

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 21:08 (twenty-two years ago)

name a few *truly* memorable songs?
fender bender
carpal tunnel
get your snack on
sordid
bridge
verbal
4 ton mantis
get a move on
sensual woman
goldrush
witness
more beats + pieces
all that you give
man with the movie camera

dyson (dyson), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 22:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Ninja Tune dropped Antibalas, Nick.

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 22:24 (twenty-two years ago)

i just wanted to add taht Funki Porcini is one of my favorite producers!

The NinjaTune sound had its heyday during the whole trip-hop craze...but just because that trend is over doesn't mean the label's a dud, imo. It's producers are top-notch and and seemed more concerned about making good music than about following trends...and their music has a wide appeal, reaching hip hop, house, broken beat, drum n bass, idm, downtempo, funk, jazz, etc fans.

but yeah, Xen cuts was a crappy compilation....and I wasn't ever into Antibalas.

waxyjax (waxyjax), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 22:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Dyson, 'Witness' is on Big Dada! That's cheetin' that is!

They are classic because I've listened to the second London Funk Allstars album on and off since 1996 (my first Ninja record, fact!)
They also have one of the illest label logos in history. And yeah, I was part of their target demographic as a teen except for the part that involved spliffs.

Also classic: Coldcut, DJ Food (the Food records and the first album proper esp.), The Herbaliser (up until the last one, also search the Peanut Butter Wolf mix of 'The Blend'),
*Kid Koala (great performer, also has cool mates like P-Love, who he 'battled' with both using 'The Girl Is Mine' and a silly story about both of 'em fancying an opptometrist at school)
*Everything DJ Jason did for 'em (LFA, DJ Toolz, Clusterfunk and the first Mad Doctor X record though they apprently pissed him off in the end)
*The early Up, Bustle And Out stuff has some great avant-pop, some not-as-wine-bar-as-ya-think moments and some not-too-gimmicky ethnic flavas
*Half of Mr Scruff's Keep It Unreal, the odd moment from Funki Porcini, the not too bad Poets Of Rhythm 7" and getting people like Cornelius and Manitoba to do remixes.

Dud: Vadim. The only decent record he ever did was the Isolationist album and I mean that. The last Scruff album except 'Sweetsmoke'. And the current jazz leanings - only Koala, DJ Jason, Coldcut's collab with Bernard Purdie, 'Get A Move On' and Food have been successful with them so far.

In-between: Tobin, the Wagon Christ stuff, some of the latest singles and label signings (Pest - alright, Jaga Jazzist - on the fence, Super Numeri - come onnnnnn) and their compilations, which is where the fluff really comes in.

Barima (Barima), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 22:50 (twenty-two years ago)

yo Bazizzle, is it the London Funk Allstars that sample Wu Tang's ''Chessboxin' with the 'hip hop will rock and shock the nation' sample going all spazzed? very classic

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 23:13 (twenty-two years ago)

is it the London Funk Allstars that sample Wu Tang's ''Chessboxin' with the 'hip hop will rock and shock the nation' sample going all spazzed?

No, it's Luke Vibert's "Get Your Head Down" that does.

Vic Funk, Tuesday, 10 February 2004 23:25 (twenty-two years ago)

the extra yard comp and that big dada posse cut w the fake timbaland beat are both still incredible, as is really most of what i said three years ago- heard the last cinematic orchestra cd a while back and its great!!

$, Tuesday, 10 February 2004 23:28 (twenty-two years ago)

thanks Vic, i used to figure it was Vibert actually but was then misinformed

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 23:29 (twenty-two years ago)

and infesticons of course, a record i manage to love despite having three or four of the worst mcs ever!! (the track w el-p rhyming is actually really tight which i guess just proves that good mcs bring out the best in him cf weathermen gossip folks freestyle)

$, Tuesday, 10 February 2004 23:30 (twenty-two years ago)

one year passes...
i just checked cos i'm home sick. i have 40 ninja tunes/ntone/big dada cds. its a strange realisation.

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Thursday, 24 February 2005 07:39 (twenty-one years ago)

so, ah, are they any good?

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Thursday, 24 February 2005 07:43 (twenty-one years ago)

the new busdriver and daedelus albums are both wonderful.

mark e (mark e), Thursday, 24 February 2005 09:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Classic, though admittedly I haven't found myself going near this stuff for the past couple years (I'm especially sick of Amon Tobin for whatever reason). This reminds me though, I need to find a Vadim CD I lost some time ago. USSR Reconstruction or something like that.

sleep (sleep), Thursday, 24 February 2005 15:42 (twenty-one years ago)

the new amon tobin is totally off the wall .. its real proper soundtrack styles .. 70's thriller funk with new modern edges. its a fine album.

mark e (mark e), Thursday, 24 February 2005 16:38 (twenty-one years ago)

one year passes...
The new search engine sucks doesn't it, sigh.

Anyway apparently a new TTC album came out last week. Anyone heard it?

Ninja Tune also coming out with new Bug album (more on the "Jah War" tip apparently) and the new Wiley album in May.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 17 January 2007 19:00 (nineteen years ago)

i have really grown weary of ttc & co.

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 17 January 2007 20:20 (nineteen years ago)

I only have the last album. It's good enough, but there is better french language hip hop obv.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 17 January 2007 21:40 (nineteen years ago)

yeah... i saw them live in the fall and spank rock pretty much blew them right off the stage, i gotta say. they are not great rappers, even if they are fast. and there are a lot of annoying electro-rap ttc copycats here. you can imagine they'd be popular here.

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 17 January 2007 21:42 (nineteen years ago)

i still listen to an embarrassing amount amount of this shit (not ttc/spankrock garbage tho)

and what (ooo), Wednesday, 17 January 2007 21:44 (nineteen years ago)

spank rock was really the first wrong foot big dada put

it's not bad!

acid waffle house (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 17 January 2007 21:50 (nineteen years ago)

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 17 January 2007 21:50 (nineteen years ago)

it was good to hear roots manuva in children of men after all that whiny brit rock trash

and what (ooo), Wednesday, 17 January 2007 21:52 (nineteen years ago)

did anybody else see biggie on rap city right before he died freestyling over tried by 12??? omg

and what (ooo), Wednesday, 17 January 2007 21:53 (nineteen years ago)

OH YEAH

cinematic orchestra
up, bustle + out

both awesome...

vahid (vahid), Thursday, 18 January 2007 07:35 (nineteen years ago)

I love the Sixtoo album on Ninja Tune and I don't care who knows it, dammit. Also still quite fond of TTC despite the deluge of hype and side projects.

Telephonething (Telephonething), Thursday, 18 January 2007 07:36 (nineteen years ago)

I forgot Infesticons was on Big Dada, the Majesticons album is dope too. And some of the stuff on NTone is great also, like Neotropic or Cabbage Boy. I have big love for the Irresistible Force album that came out on Ninja Tune, in the category of hippie chill-out records it's among the best. I guess Ninja Tune was also responsible for putting out a lot boring downtempo/blunted beats stuff (Herbalizer is the first to come to mind) in the nineties, but maybe Mo'Wax is more to blame for that.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Thursday, 18 January 2007 08:12 (nineteen years ago)

This Flexistentialism comp is good:
http://www.discogs.com/release/31130

I also think the DJ Food Solid Steel mix is excellent, in particular the Mr Scruff "Ug" & DJ Vadim "The Terrorist" blend.

Neil Stewart (Neil Stewart), Thursday, 18 January 2007 10:21 (nineteen years ago)

... then you'll be glad to hear that Dj Food are in the process of clearing tracks for their followup Solid Steel mix ..

mark e (mark e), Thursday, 18 January 2007 10:29 (nineteen years ago)

Cool!

Neil Stewart (Neil Stewart), Thursday, 18 January 2007 10:39 (nineteen years ago)

No.

dj food's ... "appetite for destruction"

this sounds great but I can't find out anything about it... sure about the title?

ledge (ledge), Thursday, 18 January 2007 15:10 (nineteen years ago)

I have Flexistentialism for some reason. I can't remember how I got it. I think Up, Bustle & Out and "Atomic Moog 2000" by Coldcut were the only two I really ever played much off of it. Mainly I find Ninja Tune stuff too "mushy," too much like "illbient" or whatever

Euai Kapaui (tracerhand), Thursday, 18 January 2007 15:17 (nineteen years ago)

I think I call this "incense house"

Euai Kapaui (tracerhand), Thursday, 18 January 2007 15:38 (nineteen years ago)

dj food's ... "appetite for destruction"

this sounds great but I can't find out anything about it... sure about the title?

er, sorry, "recipe for disaster". i get those food puns all mixed up (see what i did there?)

i think what sets a lot of people off ninja tune must be the combination of godawful puns and godawful smugness. the "political" stuff on ninja tune (that coldcut album, for example) is enough to make you vom.

vahid (vahid), Thursday, 18 January 2007 15:43 (nineteen years ago)

Actually I think you mean "refried food" :)

ledge (ledge), Thursday, 18 January 2007 15:44 (nineteen years ago)

(that coldcut album, for example) is enough to make you vom.

second favourite album of '97 at the time lolz

vita susicivus (blueski), Thursday, 18 January 2007 15:48 (nineteen years ago)

i even liked the interactive aspect of the cd. 'fuck dance let's art' i ask you...

vita susicivus (blueski), Thursday, 18 January 2007 15:49 (nineteen years ago)

i think ive admitted this before but i give alot of play to the 2 blockhead albums on ninja tune

and what (ooo), Thursday, 18 January 2007 15:51 (nineteen years ago)

including using a track off music by cavelight for a freaknasty blend

and what (ooo), Thursday, 18 January 2007 15:51 (nineteen years ago)

1st Fog album is brilliant lo-fi turntablism meets quirky americana, bit of an indie hip-hop feel (doseone guests on one of the tracks). Subsequent Fog efforts pretty rubbish though.

ledge (ledge), Thursday, 18 January 2007 15:59 (nineteen years ago)

i think ive admitted this before but i give alot of play to the 2 blockhead albums on ninja tune

Rly? I love Blockhead but I heard his solo stuff wasn't really happening. I should check that out.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 18 January 2007 16:06 (nineteen years ago)

Super Numeri 'The Welcome Table' is an incredible record. Pop Levi, Loka and Snap Ant are all related to that band and worth seeking out as well.

Bog Pony (superultramarinated), Thursday, 18 January 2007 16:08 (nineteen years ago)

If Refried Food is the DJF disc being discussed, then yeah, it's at least 40% rulz. S: Herbalizer's fake-blaxploitation version of "Mella" and Skint's "Dark Lady" rmx. The Squarepusher and Autechre tracks are great, too. D: most of the rest. Have to admit that Food on his own never impressed me much.

Totally forgot about Up, Bustle & Out! Thanks for the reminder, Vahid. "Emerald Alley" is the fucking incense (not) house jam, stupid hippy stylee, and why don't I have that 12" anymore? Because I am the brain loser and probably needed money for ... ummm ... something. Wanna hear it NOW.

Is this the right place to mention a brief infatuation with Thievery Corporation? "Lebanese Blonde", "Shaolin Satellite", "The Glass Bead Game", "Focus On Sight"... No? Didn't think so.

Oh yeah, and that Let's See What Carmen Can Do EP from Funki Porcini. Goofy shit, but worth hearing at least once. Better than all the fake spy jamez and the "trip hop", fr God's sake.

verbose, bombastic, self-immolating (Pye Poudre), Thursday, 18 January 2007 16:41 (nineteen years ago)

"Is this the right place to mention a brief infatuation with Thievery Corporation?"

There is also the thread on Perry Farrell's new album!

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 18 January 2007 16:43 (nineteen years ago)

well i hate aesop rock & basically every other def jux cat as a rapper so i never even heard dudes production work til i got this blend tape of every track from awol by az over every track from downtown science & then after that i copped dudes albums

and what (ooo), Thursday, 18 January 2007 16:44 (nineteen years ago)

the az mix is the shit btw

and what (ooo), Thursday, 18 January 2007 16:44 (nineteen years ago)

Isn't "Appetite for Destruction" a Funkstorung thing? Is that the remix record or the "real" one? I liked their remix record. I haven't pulled that out in ages.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 18 January 2007 16:48 (nineteen years ago)

...Disctruction, their first proper CD-album. the remix one was Additional Productions

Ghost Bear Junior High Attendance Party (Ghost Bear Junior High Attenda), Thursday, 18 January 2007 16:53 (nineteen years ago)

Aesop Rock is nothing without Blockhead, but I would def listen to Labor Days instrumental.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 18 January 2007 16:55 (nineteen years ago)

funki porcini's hed phone sex meant a lot to me back when. lots of it still holds up when i pull it out.

andrew m. (andrewmorgan), Thursday, 18 January 2007 17:00 (nineteen years ago)

Man, everytime I open this thread it's 2001 again.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 18 January 2007 17:01 (nineteen years ago)

See, and I was thinking 1997.

verbose, bombastic, self-immolating (Pye Poudre), Thursday, 18 January 2007 17:02 (nineteen years ago)

it's all the late-90s

acid waffle house (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 18 January 2007 17:02 (nineteen years ago)

i probably play that kruder and dorfmeister remixes thing more than anything on ninja tune proper

acid waffle house (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 18 January 2007 17:03 (nineteen years ago)

I listened to UNKLE's "Time Has Come" EP a while back. It sounded really good actually.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 18 January 2007 17:10 (nineteen years ago)

We're all doomed to live in the late 90s forever. It's like that short story from Friedrich Durrenmatt about man who gets on his morning train to work and the train goes into a tunnel, just like it does every morning, but this time it never comes out, it just keeps going, and it picks up speed until our hero climbs out onto the train and works his way towards the front and the driver is SATAN

Euai Kapaui (tracerhand), Thursday, 18 January 2007 17:14 (nineteen years ago)

I've never read it, but that's a FUCKING AWESOME STORY! Just from the way you said it, I mean. I got all freaked out.

verbose, bombastic, self-immolating (Pye Poudre), Thursday, 18 January 2007 17:17 (nineteen years ago)

except in our world the driver is the guy from nightmares on wax

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 19 January 2007 17:28 (nineteen years ago)

yeah i get insane '90s montreal flashbacks just thinking about this stuff... they seemed to be all anyone here talked about back then

s1ocki (slutsky), Friday, 19 January 2007 17:46 (nineteen years ago)

Alex, do you mean this?

It sounds like it could be cool, but that's how they get you!

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 19 January 2007 17:52 (nineteen years ago)

That is what I meant! Haha I know that's why I was asking! I actually still quite like a lot of the Scotty Hard Wordsound album.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 19 January 2007 17:53 (nineteen years ago)

He gets amazing drum sounds and knows his way around a beat, which should automatically put it above 99% of TE records.

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 19 January 2007 18:02 (nineteen years ago)

It's also not any sort of live collab either, I think. He's tinkering with already recording instrumental tracks, if I am ready this correctly.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 19 January 2007 18:05 (nineteen years ago)

timely revive. i'm currently sifting through about 2000 old cds and trying to figure out what i want to put into storage and what i want to sell. maaaan, there's a lot of ninja tune stuff in there. i'd say i've ditched about 75% of it, including the majority of the comps and most if not everything by hexstatic, mr scruff, wagon christ, fink, flanger, dj food, funki porcini, clifford gilberto, antibalas and kid koala.

stuff i've kept: the old coldcut thing, early amon tobin (everything up to supermodified is kind of amazing), cinematic orchestra (so ridiculously underrated), roots manuva, extra yard and bonobo.

i can't get with vadim, supernumeri or fog but i guess i can see what people like about them.

m@p (plosive), Friday, 19 January 2007 18:15 (nineteen years ago)

i try not to think about it.

acid waffle house (dubplatestyle), Friday, 19 January 2007 18:17 (nineteen years ago)

"try not to think about it" is right.

m@p (plosive), Friday, 19 January 2007 18:23 (nineteen years ago)

dud. hate pretty much everything theyve put since around 2000. mostly really boring, clinical, sterile eclectronic eclecticism for the sake of it.

titchyschneider (titchyschneider), Wednesday, 7 February 2007 12:41 (nineteen years ago)

loved the self-titled Attica Blues album. Jaga Jazzist is worth mentioning from post-2000 signings (though to be fair it's just a co-op with Smalltown Supersound).
