Hallowed Be Thy Name is #1

In no real order, 9 more:

Flight of Icarus
Invaders
Aces High
Murders In the Rue Morgue (This is totally great r'n'r. No love at all?)
Number of the Beast
Where Eagles Dare
The Prisoner
Sanctuary
Fear of the Dark (Is this a controversial pick? The melody is really pretty.)

sundar subramanian (sundar), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 00:31 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd seriously like to hear Depeche Mode or Kraftwerk cover "Fear of the Dark". Anton Maiden made me realize this.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 00:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Hold not thy breath, Sundar, waiting for that one.

VegemiteGrrl (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 03:04 (twenty-one years ago)

I forgot about "Alexander the Great" - I love that one! The lyrics are hilarious. Also, I appreciate that "Back in the Village" is included in Ferlin Husky's list - that one often seems to get bashed pretty unfairly for being the great song that it is - I mean, the way Bruce Dickinson sings the word "chickens" is worth a few rounds of applause all by itself.

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 09:04 (twenty-one years ago)

six years pass...

It feels lame to admit this, but I've only recently "discovered" Maiden, having picked up Number of the Beast and Piece of Mind used on vinyl... HOW DID I LIVE SO LONG without these records?! Why did I think they were somehow more commercial or arena-rock-y before now? Will the used LP gods smile upon me soon with copies of Killers, Powerslave, etc?

Clarke B., Tuesday, 30 August 2011 00:31 (fourteen years ago)

I don't know, I'm impressed that you even came across the ones you did. I NEVER see used Maiden vinyl, at least not for reasonable prices. A ridiculously overpriced store near me once had a beat to shit copy of Powerslave for like $45 once.

jon /via/ chi 2.0, Tuesday, 30 August 2011 04:13 (fourteen years ago)

Fuck that... I found Number for $15 and Piece of Mind for $18, and both (especially Piece) play great. What is with people charging outer-space egregious amounts?! Is there actually a sucker out there who'd pay $45 for a beat-up Powerslave? It's not as if it was a limited pressing of 500 records or something...

Clarke B., Tuesday, 30 August 2011 04:20 (fourteen years ago)

Well, it was a local shop that is notorious for that type of thing anyway, so it wasn't a huge surprise.

jon /via/ chi 2.0, Tuesday, 30 August 2011 04:22 (fourteen years ago)

I come across places like that as well, and I always wonder how they stay in business... It's funny, I've even found what I considered underpriced things before at places like that; it's like they have no nuance in their pricing structure, or no basis in reality.

Clarke B., Tuesday, 30 August 2011 04:26 (fourteen years ago)

It seems to have come out that the dude in this particular case is independently wealthy and just wants to run a record store, he couldn't give a shit if he ever sells his stock. Which, he rarely does, because last time I poked my head in for a chuckle, there was a lot of the exact same copies of albums that had been there three years prior. I mean, he is one of those dudes that still sells those dodgy CDR bootlegs of old Neil Young shows for $75 a pop and slaps label's on everything that read, "FLEETWOOD MAC!!! RUMOURS!!!! ORIGINAL PRESSING!!!!! RARE!!!! $38!!!"

jon /via/ chi 2.0, Tuesday, 30 August 2011 14:28 (fourteen years ago)

one month passes...

I found POWERSLAVE today on vinyl! It's just... incredible. If I had discovered these guys at a more tender time, I may well have become a full-on metalhead at a very early age.

Clarke B., Sunday, 23 October 2011 01:09 (fourteen years ago)

Posts like that make me happy.

Siegbran, Monday, 24 October 2011 21:13 (fourteen years ago)

I'm glad, Siegbran! You know what made me happy? Finding the following last night at the WFMU record fair in great shape at very good prices:

KILLERS
SOMEWHERE IN TIME
MAIDEN JAPAN

Along with Sabbath's Sabotage (thereby completing my collection of studio LPs) and Eno's Before and After Science. Maiden are seriously rapidly becoming one of my favorite bands. I mean, I discover so much music I really like on a very regular basis, but little has given me that "WHOA!!!" feeling the way early '80s Maiden has recently. It's like when I discovered the Comsat Angels, the Sound, etc, all around the same time--finding this sound and vibe that I always kind of hoped existed but never knew did.

Clarke B., Saturday, 29 October 2011 20:18 (fourteen years ago)

Killers is so great.

Siegbran, Saturday, 29 October 2011 21:15 (fourteen years ago)

Love all the albums up through Powerslave, then like the next couple with Dickinson. Folks always assume I like Maiden ironically, because I'm not a metalhead, but MAN I love nearly everything about this band.

DJ Smoove Groothe (staggerlee), Monday, 31 October 2011 02:24 (fourteen years ago)

xpost Yeah I wish I'd heard "Killers" before I'd picked those X

Race Against Rockism (Myonga Vön Bontee), Monday, 31 October 2011 08:18 (fourteen years ago)

Never heard Maiden compared to Comsat Angels or The Sound before :-)

three months pass...

I'm glad a few folks mentioned "Revelations"! This helped me put together a mix of 30 songs for my cousin to get him up to speed in case we go to their show this summer. Pre-sale tomorrow I believe. I heard they're gonna do Seventh Son, not my favorite, but as long as they throw in a few older ones...

hi so i'm new to iron maiden. i know...

i have been listening to one (1) iron maiden track that i put on a playlist for several months now, and i swear every time i hear it it gets better. that track is "the trooper". so if i want to listen to more awesome iron maiden on that level, in a bite-sized kind of way, do i just go to the album from which said track originates? or should i listen to a grab bag of, say, five other tracks instead, spread across their 80s heyday?

five six seven, eight nine ten, begin (map), Monday, 21 April 2025 22:25 (one year ago)

me too kinda, these are the ones i keep going back to over the last year

hallowed be thy name (was addicted to this one prob in a similar way you are to the trooper)
iron maiden
purgatory
aces high
powerslave
rime of the mariner

lil $CHUB (Spottie), Monday, 21 April 2025 22:46 (one year ago)

Just listen to their classic run: The Number of the Beast, Piece of Mind, and Powerslave. You'll get everything you need and some very pleasant surprises.

Instead of create and send out, it pull back and consume (unperson), Monday, 21 April 2025 22:53 (one year ago)

👍👍

five six seven, eight nine ten, begin (map), Monday, 21 April 2025 23:00 (one year ago)

yeah unperson otm

given the song/s you are digging, you’ll enjoy that first run of 3 Dickinson albums

def go back & listen to the first two albums when you’re done, D’ianno appreciation is kinda important, at the very least for comparison’s sake

and then just work your way through the catalog!!
fun and mayhem await!!

werewolves of laudanum (VegemiteGrrl), Monday, 21 April 2025 23:45 (one year ago)

Listen to Powerslave, then Powerslave and Powerslave

Jordan s/t (Jordan), Tuesday, 22 April 2025 02:50 (one year ago)

lol also correct

werewolves of laudanum (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 22 April 2025 03:57 (one year ago)

I'd definitely extend the classic run with Killers and Caught Up Somewhere in Time. And Brave New World because that's when I realized I would listen to music for the rest of my life.

Wrathchild
Killers
Hallowed be thy name
The Trooper
Aces High
Powerslave
Wasted Years
Infinite Dreams
The Wicker Man
Brave New World

Hallowed be thy name from Live After Death album, utlimate in goosebumps

Ste, Tuesday, 22 April 2025 14:43 (one year ago)

the first four tracks of piece of mind came on during the last stretch of my run. jesus... SO GOOD!!! where have they been all my life! this is the band i've been looking for and i didn't even know it.

five six seven, eight nine ten, begin (map), Thursday, 24 April 2025 21:11 (one year ago)

Live After Death is the greatest. Sometimes, it's all I need. But basically what everyone said. I'd happily take everything up to and including Seventh Son.

I would prefer not to. (Chinaski), Thursday, 24 April 2025 21:14 (one year ago)

The run on Live After Death from Rime of the Ancient Mariner to Hallowed Be Thy Name = God Tier.

I would prefer not to. (Chinaski), Thursday, 24 April 2025 21:16 (one year ago)

Picking up a cassette of Seventh Son at age 13 was a life changing moment.

omar little, Thursday, 24 April 2025 21:38 (one year ago)

haha. i feel like i'm having a life changing moment at 42!

five six seven, eight nine ten, begin (map), Thursday, 24 April 2025 21:42 (one year ago)

The last time I saw them live (or maybe the time before that, I forget — five shows between 2003 and 2010) they played "Rime..." and I about shit myself.

Instead of create and send out, it pull back and consume (unperson), Thursday, 24 April 2025 21:44 (one year ago)

I got into Maiden through Number of the Beast and Piece of Mind, which were then their latest, and then retroactively got into the two Paul Di'Anno albums. Strangely I remember being disappointed with Powerslave when it came out, though its reputation now is such that I'm willing to admit that I missed something about it. But I saw them on the Powerslave tour (Feb 15, 1985 at the Hollywood Sportatorium in Florida, opening act Twisted Sister; very memorable). I remember being impressed by Live After Death the one time I heard it - not surprised it's become a fan favorite.

Josefa, Friday, 25 April 2025 01:37 (one year ago)

I retroactively got into the Di'Anno albums as well, and I immediately loved Killers, much much more so than the debut.

I'll even rep for No Prayer For The Dying & Fear Of The Dark - solid albums despite a few clunkers.

Siegbran, Friday, 25 April 2025 11:29 (one year ago)

I read a few pages of Bruce Dickinson's first novel once, that was all I could take though. Haven't attempted Di'Anno's autobiography!

meet-cute on a dissecting table (Matt #2), Friday, 25 April 2025 11:56 (one year ago)

regularly playing piece of mind and powerslave on runs.

favorites so far:

losfer words (the mid section of this is god tier. dave murray rules.)
where eagles dare
flight of icarus
sun and steel (this one got stuck in my head)
the trooper (of course)
aces high
2 minutes to midnight
revelations

still kind of absorbing powerslave (the song) and rime, i like em a lot though

overall i think i prefer pieces but powerslave has some amazing highs. number of the beast is probably next for me.

five six seven, eight nine ten, begin (map), Tuesday, 29 April 2025 21:44 (one year ago)

Side one of Piece of Mind is Maiden at their finest, imo.

jmm, Tuesday, 29 April 2025 22:51 (one year ago)

Rime is dope fyi … idk if this corny advice but read the poem & then circle back
it’s all there!

my personal fave

werewolves of laudanum (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 29 April 2025 23:49 (one year ago)

fully on board with rime now. am i imagining this or do the chords that start at 4:13 mirror that middle section in "losfer words"? maybe not exactly but they're similar. that solo in the middle of "losfer words" by the way still knocks my socks off. the tension of the riff with the lead guitar is just *chef's kiss*.

when bruce goes high + reverb at 8:45 in rime ("then down it falls comes the raaaaaaaaaaa"), big grin every time. and the solo after that is a real beaut.

five six seven, eight nine ten, begin (map), Friday, 9 May 2025 19:09 (one year ago)

powerslave overall has really grown on me. deep cut i adore now is "back in the village," just rips front to back, somehow kind of related in vibe to "the boys are back in town" imo. just a feeling.

five six seven, eight nine ten, begin (map), Friday, 9 May 2025 19:15 (one year ago)

Documentary coming in May:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hx4tJm25kgE

Iron Maiden, possibly even more than Judas Priest, is a band that does not talk out of school, so this is gonna be a 100% on-message documentary... but I'm definitely gonna watch it at some point.

Quite right.

Gotta be honest, seeing Javier Bardem pop up put a huge smile on my face.

Looks nice. It'll be cool to dive into that post-1999 redemption arc that's still happening.
