and I'd've thought I'd be saying Steely Dan by a country mile, but the Annie Lennox one, which I didn't even know about until this morning, is kicking my ass awful hard

I think I agree with Simon Reynolds about Annie: "I Need A Man" is pretty good, the rest of her songs? Not so much.

The only one I've heard so far is the Radiohead album, so I'm in no position to say which is the best but unless the Annie Lennox album is radically different to what has gone before I doubt I'd like it much.

Also add to the candidates list: Grandaddy, Sumday. Last night, Schuba's in Chicago held a Radiohead/Grandaddy listening party, and Sumday sounded nice and summery.

but the grandaddy disc has some of the most god awful lyrics i have ever heard. i cringe when i listen to stray dog and the chocolate whatever. first three tracks are nice though

The new Fountains of Wayne album Welcome Interstate Managers is also being released today. Not that it's necessarily better than Radiohead or Steely Dan, but it at least deserves a mention.

What!? "Straw Dog and the Chocolate Shake" is already one of my favourite Grandaddy songs. How could you not like "But the guy in the driver's seat don't care / With his weird cologne and his magic hair / It's magic!"? I really like all of Sumday, by the way?

Err, no question mark there. In order to justify this extra post somewhat: I can imagine someone thinking "OK With My Decay" to be very very silly, but I think it's a proof of how great a band Grandaddy is that they turn it into a moving, epic song. So yeah.

Loving the Steely Dan album thus far, but I'm not so sure if it's today's victor. I like Hail to the Thief a good deal as well, though I've yet to really let it sink in (had two hours yesterday to digest and review the thing). At some point I'll have to come up with my own sequence and knock it down to about 40 minutes -- there's just too much to absorb and take in at once.

Anyone else notice how the odd-numbered songs make up a somewhat guitar-heavy mini-album, while the even-numbered songs make up a semi-oddball/more electronic-based mini-album? I thought the album was starting over with a new opener the first time I heard the second song start, and the second-to-last song is just as fitting as a closer as A Wolf at the Door.

this/last week indeed was a week full of potentially interesting releases and i found it hard to contain myself so i bought Radiohead, Tindersticks, Eels, Mogwai & Mono. Not a real favorite yet, my opinion is also a bit biased as I was already quite familiar with the Radiohead album (duh!), which is gorgeous. Mogwai's a winner, if only for "Hunted by a Freak". Mono's another Mogwai ca. "CODY" = goodness. Eels is much better than I've seen it give credit for (syntax?) and Tindersticks I've only heard once and requires more time (1st impression: ok). other releases screaming for discovery: aforementioned Luomo and the One More Mile album...

Oh my God. I put on Hail to the Thief last night when I was high. It literally had me holding myself and gasping. It was almost frightening - like they'd managed to get inside my head and engineer the perfect arrangement of stimuli. I've never liked them this much before. I put it on again this morning (sober). It was just as good. Then I listened to White Lion.

actually, the best thing that appeared in UK this week is the reissue of the motorbass album complete with a bonus CD of '92 and '93 period stuff. it's available either as an expensive US import or not quite so expensive French import
