Pitch-shifter delay.

SSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!

OK, it's not a secret and I've known it for a long time, but I've not played with one in ages.

I am a very happy girl.

kate (kate), Tuesday, 17 June 2003 07:46 (twenty-two years ago)

It gives it that sort of added extra flicker-flicker-flicker quiver coming off the edge of a really fast tremolo. Yum!

kate (kate), Tuesday, 17 June 2003 07:50 (twenty-two years ago)

With what equipment you accomplish that, Kate? And can I do it with a Boss ME-60?

JP Almeida (JP Almeida), Tuesday, 17 June 2003 07:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Uuuhhh... I can't find either the ME-60 or the pedal that I was using to compare. It was a silvery-blue Boss pedal though.

It wasn't by itself, it was fairly near the end of my usual long chain of equipment - distortion, chorus, tremolo, phase, sampler. But it just added that sparkling harmonic scattering effect. If you play it clean, it just sounds like a 12-string. But if you mix it with a really fast tremolo, it's like the pedal can't keep up and just splinters octave harmonics everywhere!

It's quite entertaining trying to tune your guitar to the National Grid.

kate (kate), Tuesday, 17 June 2003 08:03 (twenty-two years ago)

I want one! I want one:

(us with pedals + righteous polychordal drones)

both the boss pitch shifter/ delay and harmonist pedals are great but expensive

s.r.w. (s.r.w.), Tuesday, 17 June 2003 08:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Noise suppressor. Ha ha! Now why would anyone want to do that?

Ooops, must stop mucking about on pedal sites and get back to work. :-)

kate (kate), Tuesday, 17 June 2003 08:08 (twenty-two years ago)

"Noise suppressor. Ha ha! Now why would anyone want to do that?"

LOL! Well, the Boss ME-60 has a little knob for that purpose, and I tell you, it is very useful when you want that clear-as-fuck tone, and you can't ground your amp in your apartment...

JP Almeida (JP Almeida), Tuesday, 17 June 2003 08:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Is it a multi-effects unit or something?

kate (kate), Tuesday, 17 June 2003 08:17 (twenty-two years ago)

I am listening to Spz's _Run_ 22 times in a row to figure out if we can throw together a cover of it in time for Saturday.

Oh, the tremoloes!

kate (kate), Tuesday, 17 June 2003 08:29 (twenty-two years ago)

we

We? Kate, who is this we, of whom you speak? And what's happening on Saturday? Just cos I'm stuck in Surrey doesn't mean I don't *care* anymore...

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Tuesday, 17 June 2003 08:38 (twenty-two years ago)

I sent you an invite, Charlie! I know that I did! AND it was posted on 22!

We = me + Jesse + HSA.

Happening this Saturday = Electric Bubblegum Arkestra playing at RoTa, supporting Now.

We are doing a "cover" of Disinformation's _National Grid_ (heh!) and I'm twisting Jesse's arm to ruin - I mean, cover - a Spz song but we haven't decided which one yet.

kate (kate), Tuesday, 17 June 2003 08:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Sorry, it's the ME-50, and, yeah, it's an effect processor unit. Here's a site with a picture of it, sorry, it's in German, but it was the first working link I found on Altavista...

http://www.roellinmusic.ch/seiten/me50.html

JP Almeida (JP Almeida), Tuesday, 17 June 2003 08:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Hrmmm, that is interesting. I'm not sure if it would work though, unless you can trigger multiple effects at once. Because it really needs phase *and* chorus *and* tremolo, as well as pitch shift *and* delay to get the proper sparkle. I haven't used a multiple effects unit in about ten years, but I used to get frustrated that I couldn't pour on as many different modulations as I wanted, and get them in the sequence that I wanted. Because the little shimmering bits come from things being not just phased, but all the phases being slightly out of phase with each other. No pure phase for me! I want my phase all over the place!

kate (kate), Tuesday, 17 June 2003 08:46 (twenty-two years ago)

this thread reminds me of bart and milhouse: "Woooah that's good squishy!"

Perfect Drone = Good Slushee

Get thee to a Quickee Mart!

kate (kate), Tuesday, 17 June 2003 08:52 (twenty-two years ago)

I know what you mean... pure phasing sludge. Still have to experiment further though... I have a spare chorus and delay pedals, so I'll just mess around with it.

JP Almeida (JP Almeida), Tuesday, 17 June 2003 09:06 (twenty-two years ago)

AND it was posted on 22!

aha! just seen 22 post. never got invite, but. bah. will try to make it anyway, got some houses to look round in any case so may as well make a day of it.

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Tuesday, 17 June 2003 10:16 (twenty-two years ago)

I like my phase shifter looping back on chorus pedal setup.

Jon Williams (ex machina), Tuesday, 17 June 2003 10:19 (twenty-two years ago)

I like the scratchy old strings channel on my Crumar Performer run through stereo chorus and each output of the stereo chorus through it's own amplifier, and then I set the amplifiers like 20-40 feet apart. And then I run one of them through a Digitech Whammy pedal and drop or raise that signal an octave or two. I <3 my Crumar.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 17 June 2003 12:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Nickalicious in making dronerock SHOCKAH!!! I don't believe it. It must be dronefunk or something. Oh, the horror, the horror. ;-)

kate (kate), Tuesday, 17 June 2003 12:07 (twenty-two years ago)

I wanna get a pan pedal to do this:

source---->[pan]----------
| |
| |
V |
[effects] |
| |
V |
[delay]--------------[amp]

You see, yes?

Jon Williams (ex machina), Tuesday, 17 June 2003 12:13 (twenty-two years ago)

That's pretty much what my live setup is. Except I put a couple of distortion pedals and a chorus before the pan (it's a tremolo pan, yummmm!) and send that to a Marshall, and send the effected, delayed signal to my AC-30.

In fact, that's what I was doing last night, except running the line outs to Joe's mixing board instead of to an amp.

Stereo-pan ROXORS!!!

kate (kate), Tuesday, 17 June 2003 12:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Best of luck for the weekend, Ms. Kate! Record and upload the results so we may hear.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 17 June 2003 12:20 (twenty-two years ago)

I just bought a TALKBOX!

I think this will used as:

[phase shifter]--->[ring modulator]-->[chorus]--->[talkbox]-->[amp]
^---------------------------------------------

I neeeeeeeeeeeed a pan :/

Jon Williams (ex machina), Tuesday, 17 June 2003 12:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Talkbox? Dude, there is a pedal I've never dared to go...

kate (kate), Tuesday, 17 June 2003 12:28 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm from Providence, RI! I'M SO CRAZY! LOOK I AM IN A BAND WITH MASKS!

It's one of the "safe non-amp smoking" kind.

Jon Williams (ex machina), Tuesday, 17 June 2003 12:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Dude, there is a line. And a talkbox crosses it. ;-)

kate (kate), Tuesday, 17 June 2003 12:34 (twenty-two years ago)

A talkbox is on the other side of it. A talkbox has walked all over my nice clean line and scuffed it up and stands laughing from the other side! The BAD side! The DARK side! (but not The Darkside, who used wah-wahs with frequency, but never talkboxes)

kate (kate), Tuesday, 17 June 2003 12:38 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm using it in a non traditional sense though!

DO NOT DISGRACE MY BEAUTIFUL THREAD WITH THAT ABOMINATION, THANK YOU!!!

Jon Williams (ex machina), Tuesday, 17 June 2003 12:57 (twenty-two years ago)

The Darkside
mmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.

But for Spz covers, Suicide is urgent and key!

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Tuesday, 17 June 2003 12:59 (twenty-two years ago)

But that's Spacemen 3, not Spz!

kate (kate), Tuesday, 17 June 2003 13:00 (twenty-two years ago)

You want drone, do ya, Williams? I'll give yer DRONE!!!

Aaaaaaaah, they painted their knobs!

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Tuesday, 17 June 2003 13:09 (twenty-two years ago)

But that's Spacemen 3, not Spz!
Looks at watch, shit its 10 after 10 and I haven't finished my coffee or even pretended to start working. Shit.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Tuesday, 17 June 2003 13:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Kate, actually I play hella dronerock, although it's a strange alien type of dronerock heavily tainted by funk rhythms and free jazz and scratchy-potted second-hand late 70s keyboards. :D

And on the topic of the talkbox...

Guitar -> amp -> talkbox -> mic (in a Frampton way) = kinda meh.

Moog -> amp -> talkbox -> mic -> echoplex = awe-inspiring robots from hell.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 17 June 2003 13:10 (twenty-two years ago)

What did Kraftwerk use to make the robot voices?

Jon Williams (ex machina), Tuesday, 17 June 2003 13:13 (twenty-two years ago)

They were robots, natch.

kate (kate), Tuesday, 17 June 2003 13:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Totally unrelated to drone rock (probably), but I finally got my new (to me) keyboard (actually an old Korg). Huzzah! Too bad I'm at work and won't be able to play with it until 5:12 PM.

E-bow

Chris Clark (Chris Clark), Wednesday, 18 June 2003 08:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Ha-ha, yes, e-bow was involved. Didn't I talk about that in this thread? I came home yesterday and the batteries on my ebow were completely run down. Someone had been putting my guitar on the floor, resting the ebow on the strings and running the result through all sorts of modulations. Ha-hem. No idea who. Probably the milk demon that mysteriously drank the entire quart we bought last night!

An e-bowing milk demon, now there is a Buffy episode waiting to happen!
