what was the last song you heard on radio for first time that totally floated your boat?

uninterestingly mine was Beyonce...by chance heard in a Spar shop while i was buying breakfast, this was about a month or so ago.

but unless i'd tuned to Radio 1 for some reason (not very likely) i would not have heard this song until someone started enthusing about it on this board, or i'd heard it together with the video on TV.

radio used to be a bigger factor in giving me that first taste of a great new song but i can't remember the last time it happened before that. i know if i spent more time listening to the RIGHT radio stations (whether online, digital, analogue or what) i would get this experience more but as it stands i do not.

how is radio working for you these days in introducing you to new music that gets you excited?

I can't actually remember the last time that I actually listened to the radio.

I mean, listened to radio for actual programming, rather than Joe's insistence on radio static while we sleep.

I associate listening to the radio with riding in cars, and I just don't do that when not on tour.

I really miss College Radio from the states. I know it's probably been taken over by Clear Channel, just not the same, etc. etc. but I really miss it. I suppose the closest thing that we have over here is Resonance FM but I have such trouble working net radio cause I'm a technoidiot sometimes.

So I guess radio doesn't work at all, to answer your question.

i can't listen to radio one at the moment seeing as its DJs all think they are totally the bun's muffins for being able prove they read nme and can deploy its "line" on "manufactured pop"

(i don't much mind when just *some* of them do this but IF YOU AREE THE GUY WHO IS PAID TO PLAY THE TOP 40 IN ORDER THEN YR CULTURAL COMMENTARY IS OUT OF ORDER DO YOU SEE etc)

OK, the last actual time I can remember hearing a song on the radio that had that HOLY F@CK, THAT'S AMAZING, WHAT IS THAT, IT'S THE BEST THING EVER!!! reaction was Bootylicious by Destiny's Child. I remember reading discussion about it on this board, but since I hadn't heard it, and had only this vague view of DC in terms of "I'll keep the TV on MTV when they're on" - but I'd formed a vaguely negative view of the song, mainly due to Dan's comments. I didn't know what it was when it came on the radio in the tourvan. It was just wonderful, gorgeous bootydrone with girly harmonies over the top - I.E. the best song ever written to directly appeal to Kate.

listened to radio 1 for the first time in months yesterday, thank god, the office Virgin Radio fascists were having a day off, and heard Wayne Wonder and Lumidee for the first times after reading much about them, and was instantly in love with both!

last year, this happened on a fairly regular basis. esp. trevor nelson + dreem teem shows, i would expect to hear something mindblowing every week really. i've hardly listened to any radio this year apart from office-classics stations :-(

I have never been bowled over completely and utterly since I first heard The Rock by Delakota back in 1998 and went nutso. Every instance since then has seemed very pale and meaningless in comparison.

Last night I was driving home from practice, which is about an hour's drive, and I was listening to the radio and a whole stream of great stuff came on (though I was switching from station to station, mainly from hip-hop station to classic rock) but I heard "The Magic Stick" by Lil' Kim and 50 Cent (which will soon get its own thread), "You Shook Me All Night Long," by AC/DC, "Lola" by the Kinks, "Rock and Roll" by Led Zeppelin, that rap song called "Right Thur" by I don't know who, and a bunch of other fun stuff I forgot, and sure, none of it blew my mind, but it was great for driving over the speed limit down the highway at night.

Most recently it was that newish Snoop/Neptunes song with the k-swinging beat. Pharrell's voice on that song : Pharrell's voice on NERD :: David Byrne's voice on Naked : David Byrne's voice on 77 (that is to say, it's getting better)

Most recently before that it was that Trick Daddy/Cee-Lo song I think is called "Trick Luv Da Kids", but honestly that was almost entirely cuz of Cee-Lo's singing on the hook; I've said before and I'll say again that he's got one GOD-DAMN FINE voice.

the local college station played "lover i dont have to love" by bright eyes and i loved it. i didnt know who bright eyes was. I thought that there was finally a truly hilarious catchy indie rock band out there. then i got the album and found out he was honestly that melodramatic. tsssk tsssk tsssk. i still think its a catchy fuckin song though
