How are AMG's star ratings decided?

How does that work? Sometimes the star rating is low and the review calls it one of the best albums ever. Sometimes the stars change (Weezer's Pinkerton and Eminem's first two albums went from 4 1/2 to 5 stars). Just curious....

And what of those dastardly checkmarks?

YES!

I feel so out of the loop, because I honestly didn't have the foresight to realize it wasn't good to want to know this.

The rating is generally assigned by the person who wrote the review. In-house editors make adjustments whenever necessary. The entire database is a work in progress, so the ratings are bound to change whenever debates come up within the department.

There are instances in which the rating clearly does not correspond to the review. This is most likely to happen when we replace a review and the appropriate change to the rating slips through the cracks. It's bound to happen when over a thousand reviews are added to the database on a weekly basis. We try to catch these issues as soon as possible.

The red check marks in the discographies denote the pick(s). The goal with the red check is to denote the record that is the most representative -- and not necessarily the best.

Why replace a review? I really liked the one-and-a-half-star pan of Parachutes.

MC Crudders and DJ Grizz to thread!

the fun part is to find the reviews(and this has happened to mine own, as well) where the star rating looks about two stars off from what the review suggests...

It involves taking the album title, the band name and a little hash.

**** 2000 Selmasongs: Music From the Motion Picture...

That extra enhanced content must really suck!

nine months pass...
Just put on the Stylistics' first album and decided to peep the AMG review. It's pretty laudatory:

"The brilliant album that got everything started. Heads turned, people snapped to attention (women especially), and the "sweet" soul fraternity was turned on its head when this five-member group featuring the sugary, sweeping falsetto of Russell Tompkins, Jr. hit the scene with such singles as "Betcha by Golly Wow," "People Make the World Go Round," and "Stop, Look and Listen to Your Heart." His delivery, shimmering style, and brilliant pacing and control temporarily rendered almost every other "sweet" soul vocalist and group speechless; pretty soon, the Delfonics, Blue Magic, Moments, and others would fight back, but in 1972, everyone was playing catchup to The Stylistics."

The rating: three stars.

I should also add that our resources are not unlimited.

You should've hired me when you had the chance in 2001.

As always, I blame Ned.
