CD burning and indie labels

I've read here that labels get reimbursed for CD burning via a percentage of every dollar sold on blank CDs -- but am I right in thinking that only the big labels get a cut? So when I burn an Autechre CD, I'm benefitting BMG/Sony/et al *and* screwing Warp?

I thought over here, only the designated 'music CD-R's had a record industry surcharge. So you just buy data ones.

I may be wrong about that though.

yeah, data CDs have no surcharge on them in Aus either. so neither boyracer nor fleetwood mac are getting a cent from my compilation CDs

I wonder if artists get any of the money, & if they all get an equal cut.

If they do, Lars probably just beats them up for it during recess.

Personally, I try not to burn indie CDs unless they are really rare and expensive and/or out of print. I feel kind of bad taking away from bands and labels that are lucky to sell 10 units to begin with....

its kind of a funny way to do it, no? like putting sales tax on fits or something. its illegal...but if you're gonna do it WE wanna make some money.

I believe its essentially what we'd call an excise tax, no?
