Do her songs make sense to you?

LA75 (LA75), Thursday, 31 July 2003 01:05 (twenty-two years ago)

in what sense do they make sense? linear narrative?

they make plenty fine sense to me. well some of them do. Some a boring ole tosh though. but plenty i quite like. gosh that wasn't very helpful of me was it.

gallantseagull, Thursday, 31 July 2003 01:08 (twenty-two years ago)

she likes to speak out against the record industry, ya know.

Mike Taylor (mjt), Thursday, 31 July 2003 01:11 (twenty-two years ago)

when you say shit like that you're inviting people who think they're the only ones who "get" pt anderson movies to call you simple

truth is you're better off not making sense of them. i made sense of one of them once and i can't wash my hands enough since.

She played at gig I went to last night but I didn't hang out long enough to see her.

i'm currently leafing through 'choosing death: the improbable history of death metal and grindcore', and she has her name in there. twice.

Theyre all still on their honeymoon
Just read the dialogue balloon
Everyone loves you--
Why should they not?
And Im the only one who knows
That disneylands about to close
I dont suppose youd give it a shot
Knowing all that youve got

Are cigarettes and red vines
Just close your eyes, cause, baby--
You never do know
And Ill be on the sidelines,
With my hands tied,
Watching the show

Well, its always fun and games until
Its clear you havent got the skill
In keeping the gag from going too far
So youre running round the parking lot
til every lightning bug is caught
Punching some pinholes
In the lid of a jar
While we wait in the car

With cigarettes and red vines
Just close your eyes, cause, baby--
You never do know
And Ill be on the sidelines,
With my hands tied,
Watching the show

And tell me, would it kill you
Would it really spoil everything
If you didnt blame yourself
Do you know what I mean?

The Forgotten Arm is one of the most articulate and coherent, if one-dimensional, concept albums I've ever heard.

Joseph McCombs, Sunday, 13 January 2008 16:46 (eighteen years ago)

Love her to pieces, but she uses "deathly" in a grammatically incorrect manner. So not sure if "articulate" is the word here, folks.

Dear John and Goodbye Caroline are two of the greatest songs ever

tremendoid, Thursday, 29 May 2008 22:01 (eighteen years ago)

she's always got her finger pointed at someone

tremendoid, Thursday, 29 May 2008 22:02 (eighteen years ago)

it's what makes her and elliott smith kind of insufferable for me.

tremendoid, Thursday, 29 May 2008 22:02 (eighteen years ago)

i do like the music, brion kinda played it out though

calstars, Saturday, 15 March 2014 18:23 (twelve years ago)

Ted Leo and her seem like interesting foils for each other, complementary enough without being all that obvious, so I'm curious how it will turn out.

Lol thread title btw

Harmonies a strong point. I like "oh Susan" in this regard.

calstars, Saturday, 15 March 2014 20:56 (twelve years ago)

It's actually just called "Susan."

calstars, Saturday, 15 March 2014 20:59 (twelve years ago)

I mentioned in the other (one of the other?) Aimee Mann thread, but Leo and Mann are full collaborators on this, thankfully. There's no clear her song/his song. They sing together, harmonize, bring the best of what they do to each other's best. Which isn't to say it's better than any of their other stuff, but a really nice cross between the two of them.
