Please no Cody Chestnutt or Nu Soul bullshit these rap artists are attempting. Anything dirty or nasty like the bad brains or guns n roses anything with guitars. I have heard of Apollo Heights and Trendcaster? but don't know what they sound like or if they have anything out.

Apollo Heights are the semi-reincarnation of the Veldt, probably the nineties Great Lost Band for me. But I haven't heard the Apollo Heights yet either, there's not even a web page for 'em.

Stiffed are half-black, half-white, and lots of fun. They have an EP out.

Mother's Finest -- "Iron Age" -- just reissued on Wounded Bird.
One token white guy plus a chick singer. Biker rock veering
between the Godz and the Boyzz.

Was that the Dirtbombs guy up there? Do Comes With the Fall count? Now Time Delegation? Stiffed? Burnt Sugar? The Negro Problem? Hootie and the Blowfish? (All have black frontpeople, I believe, at very least. Like Thin Lizzy.)

Kingfish (Kingfish), Friday, 1 August 2003 20:20 (twenty-two years ago)

the black rock coalition which was founded back in 1985 used to have a webpage but it's not working now. The BRC did a tribute to Nina Simone recently but well that's different then the Bad Brains.

Basehead have disappeared again here in DC after briefly reappearing as a Christian act (really).

BRC founder and p-funk and Miles Davis fan (and Village Voice writer)Greg Tate has a band called Burnt Sugar. The Rites, Burnt Sugar's collaborative effort with Butch Morris, Pete Cosey and Melvin Gibbs is ready! http://burntsugarindex.com/Home/News.htm

Steve Kiviat (Steve K), Saturday, 2 August 2003 18:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh yeah (guess this is kind of obvious but...) the Roots actually would qualify as a "band", in many senses, and do have a couple metallic-ish songs on their most recent CD, if I remember right.

chuck, Monday, 4 August 2003 14:52 (twenty-two years ago)

...Which isn't to say they're necessarily a match for, like, Xavion or Sound Barrier or Pure Hell or whoever. (Though they may well be. And they definitely beat the heck out of 24-7 Spyz.)

In case I'm not enough of a broken record on this thread/this message board/life in general, let me once again reiterate my love & appreciation of one of the greatest American rock bands evah, whose membership just happens to be comprised entirely of African-Americans, and thusly I reiterate with a pic:

"C'mon y'all, SKANK N GO NUTTZ!"

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 4 August 2003 16:29 (twenty-two years ago)

If we're including groups consisting not-entirely of African-American folks, I'd say King's X should also be mentioned a little. I mean, if we're gonna name check Hootie and not King's X, that's kinda ill.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 4 August 2003 16:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Hey Nick, If you're a fan of King's X (who I keep forgetting still exist), you should DEFINITELY check out Comes With The Fall, who could totally be King's X crossed with Soundgarden, I swear.

(As for Fishbone, I also keep forgetting they didn't break up 19 years ago, after their fine debut EP, when they should have. But I dont' wanna start any fights today, so I'll keep my mouth shut.)

chuck, Monday, 4 August 2003 19:00 (twenty-two years ago)

i think they've gotten better with each and every release. honestly.
