They're like locusts that chirp.

the way cicadas modulate their mating call is so dope imo

it's like nature's high pass filter or something
― corpse pose (missingNO), Monday, 11 July 2011 06:13 (fourteen years ago)
actually i guess high pass filter plus pitch lfo would be more accurate

They have mellowed in my neck of the woods but a month ago they were DEAFENING.Oneida's latest (Absolute II) sounded great in the ipod while walking around with Cicadas droning loudly in the background.

Yeah, I was in the Nashville area about a month ago and it was insane. Landing on me constantly and just coming on in waves sonically. I could hear them while in a car with closed windows going 75 mph on the highway (i.e., over the noise AND through the closed windows of the car).
Of course, I loved it. Super-amazing sounds. Deafening is right, but very cool in that it transformed reality utterly. Conversations had to be aborted, leaving just that spectacular sound.

Something about them mating for the first time since 1996?
This time it's called BROOD II?! It doesn't get much better than this, really.

Brood II, or the “East Coast Brood,” is not to be confused with Brood X, also known as the “Great Eastern Brood.” Brood X most recently surfaced in 2004 and isn’t expected to return until 2021.

the last 17 yr plague i dealt with was surreal, intersection down the street completely covered with dessicated cicada corpses flattened into a new grisly pavement that stopped crunching after a few days, just a nice sheen of broken wings and exoskeletons.

This is kind of cute but animated cicadas don't have the desperate visceral buzz of the real dealhttp://www.cicadaprincess.com/clips.html

I love cicadas. They get really intense in my neck of the woods, they have even brought some media attention to my little town via the ice cream shop that featured a cicada flavor for about five minutes before the FDA shut that shit down. And NPR did a little feature on some local indies that made a cicada themed compilation.

Do you get lots of corpses everywhere?
I never bothered to read much about cicadas before, content to just enjoy their noises, but this is an entertaining wiki!http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cicada_%28mythology%29
