ironic cover versions

Nothing to do with the lists of dream cover versions...is it me,or does it seem harder and harder to avoid suspicions of irony when doing cover versions? You have examples like that Alien Ant Farm cover of 'Smooth Criminal',the Lemonheads covering New Kids On The Block and Metallica, and now L_mp B_zk_t are allegedly going to cover Frankie's 'Relax' - surely even Fred Durst can see the irony in that.Trouble is,if someone were to sincerely attempt to cover a song like,I dunno,'Pour Some Sugar On Me' by Def Leppard, wouldn't we just laugh at them?

Some very po-faced Nick Drake fans approached me at a time when I was getting a lot of reviews saying 'Momus is Nick Drake with a Casio' and asked me to choose a Drake cover version for a tribute album. I told them I wanted to do his song 'Ride' ('Hear me calling, won't you give me a free ride?') in the style of disco queen Sylvester. I never heard back from them. I guess they had an irony blindspot or something.

Three helpful aphorisms:

1. Last year's irony becomes this year's sincerity.

2. This year's sincerity becomes next year's irony.

3. Always make sure your Irony watch is indicating the correct time.

I think I lost my irony watch a lot time ago. I finally heard Luna's cover of "Sweet Child of Mine", and realized what a simple great pop song it really is.

In Moulin Rouge Teen Spirit , an anthem of bitter irony , is used unironically. Is this ironic ?
