taking sides: third eye blind's "never let you go" vs the weezer single of your choice

resolve a dispute from this weekend: who made the best indie-rock-except-good single of the past decade?

(my sympathies are, of course, with "never let you go.")

This is so strange, why Weezer? Anyhow, Never Let You Go isn't as good as 3EB's other singles, though it's good, it's not nearly as good as, like, say, Jumper or Graduate or Losing a Whole Year (if that last one was ever even a single). Weezer, though, has Buddy Holly. So the crown goes to Weezer.

The Good Life beats Third Eye Blind and it's Charlize Theron-fucking lead singer's ass.

JM, Wednesday, 29 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Ally, what of "How's it Gonna Be?" Didn't you kinda model one of your website entries on it?

Mitch Lastnamewithheld, Wednesday, 29 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The Good Life might be my favorite Weezer song... it really is great.

Sean, Wednesday, 29 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Oh yeah, Weezer wins this one by a long shot.

Mitch Lastnamewithheld, Wednesday, 29 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I like Weezer now a fair bit, but I don't think any of their songs make as good a single as "Never Let You Go". Mind you I don't think many of their songs make as good a single as "Summer Girls" by LFO.

I'm going to use a classic-dud ILM phrase now: I JUST DONT SEE WHY THIS BOARD HATES THIRD EYE BLIND SO MUCH. Thankyou.

Secret Indie-Cred-Destroying Shame: I own two Third Eye Blind albums. Yes, two. The first I purchased ages ago after "How's it Gonna Be" became lodged in my brain and I didn't know that indie-kids really shouldn't be listening to this sort of stuff etc. Incidentally, they are almost unknowns over here. Once in a looong while I'll drag it out and give it a test spin. It's got some nostalgia value that hasn't yet yielded to a few years of my musical snobbery. I'll give it time. And the singles are, erm, "fun", I suppose. Peppier than the more adult-contemporary leaning Matchbox ("Fucking") 20 (who are always seem to be mentioned in the same breath as 3EB)and less bratty, annoyingly punkish than the Blink-brigade. Not 'Classic' though. At least, not anymore. For the most part, the music is completely faceless and when it's catchy, it's 'just' catchy. Which is fine for the singles, less so for the entire album (which is still how I listen to most of my music.) Second one didn't really get much of a chance for me to give a fuck about it. I bought it at the same time as I did Weezer's self-titled. I'm still listening to the latter.

Mitch Lastnamewithheld, Wednesday, 29 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

We could have an argument here about my accusations of facelessness and my estimation of "catchiness" and how these might apply equally to Weezer as they do to Third Eye Blind. For now, I'm going to sleep.

I get to be fair and even-handed here. They both eat. :-)

NLYG is not as good as "El Scorcho", but that may have never been a single. I don't think it's as good as "Say It Ain't So" either.

Kris, Wednesday, 29 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

El Scorcho was the first single in the US off of Pinkerton.

I enjoy Third Eye Blind's singles. Honest. I find them fun and catchy. But I'm not gonna go get their albums. Same with Everclear.

JM, Thursday, 30 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I thought Third Eye Blind's hit was Semi Charmed Life? (Google: SCL: 8610, NLYG: 4950).

Anyway, Weezer win.

Ally, what of "How's it Gonna Be?" Didn't you kinda model one of your website entries on it?

You are astoundingly astute - none of my friends who read it noted it, or at least to me (despite asking if it was obvious) - I had the song on while writing it.

I should model all my website entries on songs I am listening to. For example, I am currently listening to The Thong Song. Erm. Perhaps bad idea.

Anyhow, I also like 3EB. A lot. I own two of their albums (do they have, um, more than that?). I don't understand the general derision they receive. Yes, the lead singer is a twat but so are most lead singers.

Ally, Thursday, 30 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Weezer is the only band that ever proved that they don't care about their top 40 radio rotation or label deal. Lead singer takes four years off to go back to college. What other band can take such breaks from their success and come back to fans so hungry for more. Besides, rob thomas is rock's worst frontman next to Ronnie James Dio and Gary Glitter. Pretentious asshole.

Luptune Pitman, Thursday, 30 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

If they don't care, how come Mr. Cuomo muttered something about specifically tailoring the green album to sell units specifically to get their name back in the limelight? ;-)

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 30 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Besides, rob thomas is rock's worst frontman next to Ronnie James Dio and Gary Glitter

Who said anything about Rob Thomas? And Ronnie James Dio is to pompous metal what midgets are to wrestling.

Anyway, Weezer is one of the most carefully marketed bands I can think of.

Kris, Thursday, 30 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Most of us, Tom excluded, are wilfully ignoring the song-single disparity, yes? If someone requests the better 'single', shouldn't we be leaning towards the more immediate, perhaps the 'slicker' music- the stuff that'll sound 'best' when you blast it from your shiny new Jeep© in parking lots? These qualifications wouldn't favour anything off 'Pinkerton', as much as I love that album.

Mitch Lastnamewithheld, Friday, 31 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Reading this in the light of the new day, I think I am partially wrong.
