What is the Mercury Prize?

Is it as meaningful as the Grammy Awards (i.e. not at all)? What clout does it carry? It seems that the artists I've noticed who've won them actually seem to be not so bad. Or does no one care?

Sean, Wednesday, 29 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

the planet mercury was named after a roman god with winged feet. mercury was the god of flowers and bouquets, which is why today he is a registered trademark of ftd florists. why they named an award after this guy, i can't imagine.

ethan, Wednesday, 29 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I did notice that once Damon Gough snagged the award, he turned into an even bigger megalomaniac than before. My (admittedly limited) understanding of the awards is that a jury panel listens to something like 9 or 10 key UK records (key by whose standards, I cannot say) and then casts votes for the record they believe to be most significant. Not sure what kind of people the panel is comprised of, either (crits, industry types, etc).

Keyes, Thursday, 30 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Shortlist of 10-12 records each year, chosen by the jury from a longlist, to get on which you need to have been nominated by your record company and paid the prize organisers some money. Hence there is always a bit of a fluff because small record labels can't afford to put their records forward.

Who's on the jury? Simon Frith, who is Professor Of Pop somewhere or other, a few industry types, a few musicians, a couple of journalists. Every year I think "Right this will be the year I write that blazing letter to S.Frith which will shame him into representing the REAL FANS i.e. putting ME on the panel". And obviously I don't actually do it.

Dead is the debut studio album by Scottish hip hop group Young Fathers. It was released on Anticon and Big Dada on February 4, 2014.

the horribly named GoGo Penguin are jazz too, maybe this is a jazz year

john wahey (NickB), Wednesday, 10 September 2014 17:19 (eleven years ago)

It's their second nomination - last was 2005 for Held On The Tips Of Fingers. Seb has been involved in other records that have been nominated though.

Hey Bob (Scik Mouthy), Wednesday, 10 September 2014 17:23 (eleven years ago)

Was hoping Neil Cowley would get the token jazz nod, shame he's missed out.

not a massive fan of that record but it's infinitely more agreeable than the other stuff I've heard off this list

john wahey (NickB), Wednesday, 10 September 2014 20:42 (eleven years ago)

have given east india youth a few plays and i don't really get it, but it seems vastly preferable to the likes of james blake as far as earnest synthsmithery types go

royal blood seems like the proxy alex turner option, screw that imo

gogo penguin make some clever music but it's polite and tasteful to the point of frigidity

is the anna calvi any better than her previous? that never really lived up to the (admittedly modest) hype

still need to give the kate tempest a proper listen, not much of a fan of her voice though

have no interest in hearing nick mulvey - nick is kind of a boring name tbh, puts me right off

fuck off damon albarn forever

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 10 September 2014 22:00 (eleven years ago)

maybe it could be award worthy in a 'best scottish rap album' context?

Nothing less than the Spirit of the Age (nakhchivan), Wednesday, 10 September 2014 22:03 (eleven years ago)

ya i know but i was making a weird qualitative observation xp

Inverness is perhaps the most overlooked area of Scottish Hip Hop though acts such as Spit-Dis and T-E-C were prominent in the Highlands & Islands. Spit-Dis consists of Brude(Glass Cage), John-Boi (Focus on the Day), KD (Life is a Game) and Sherbit(Hip-Hop). Their most misunderstood track "Morgue City", highlighted the high suicide rate in the North's capital. The members of T-E-C, Mgoff and Paul Scotti are perhaps most recognised for their tracks "Don't Doubt The Flow", "These Parts" and "The Movement". In an area disproportionately dominated by traditional Highland music and Rock bands, these groups are particularly influential in the local and national scene in a way which was previously unassociated with artists from this area.[citation needed]

Many xposts: last Charli album is actually 2013 but would be outside the allotted time period.

Lots of surprising omissions incl. Sam Smith, Chvrches, Blood Orange and La Roux. Twigs to win in a landslide.

monoprix à dimanche (dog latin), Friday, 12 September 2014 09:14 (eleven years ago)

The shortlist could have been better.

But it also could have been a lot worse.

Kate Tempest, I think, works better as a poet than as a rapper.

Two jazz nominations and wouldn’t it be nice if – for once – one of them won?

Here he is with the classic "Poème Électronique." Good track (Marcello Carlin), Friday, 12 September 2014 09:35 (eleven years ago)

East India Youth is great although I felt there were a few too many instrumentals on the album whereas I'd heard the majority of the song-based tracks on the preceding Hostel EP. Still a good record though and well worth seeing live in the right context.

monoprix à dimanche (dog latin), Friday, 12 September 2014 09:37 (eleven years ago)

Yeah the Kate Tempest album is interesting but selling her as a rap artist is largely going to invite derision and confusion I fear. I definitely think of her as a performance poet who is influenced by rap and it's certainly a better way to approach that album in the first instance.

Matt DC, Friday, 12 September 2014 09:56 (eleven years ago)

I like the production on the Young Fathers record (esp. the Knife-y backing on "Get Up") but the rapping is really dodgy. Cod-profundity wrapped in "clever" gibberish. Who was it that said something like: alliteration is the last refuge of the person with nothing to say?

Boo to no Cure

And surprised Little Simz and Ezra aren't on there as they seem perennial Mercury faves

groovypanda, Wednesday, 10 September 2025 10:24 (nine months ago)

Not much of an alternative to the Brits when it's full of previous Brit Nominees. I get the argument that they need them in order to push the lesser known stuff through, but they're hardly doing that this year. Nice to see Martin Carthy get a nod at least. Truth is, it's just another dull corporate prize.

As it's my wheelhouse, the token jazz is new to me cos I don't pay much attention to mainstream UK jazz industry hype. It's pleasant but fairly anonymous piano trio stuff. The Britpop influences really don't help sell it. Fair play to the lad, but in a year that's produced outstanding, genuinely innovative albums from [Ahmed], Pat Thomas, Alexander Hawkins et al, polite conservatoire stuff like this just isn't good enough.

Composition 40b (Stew), Wednesday, 10 September 2025 10:27 (nine months ago)

I don't know anything about Joe Webb but I was hoping Neil Cowley would get the nod for Entity, which IMHO is as great as the artists you mention (whom I also love, for the avoidance of doubt).

bored by endless ecstasy (anagram), Wednesday, 10 September 2025 10:31 (nine months ago)

Did you see the list of judges? There's no way this was ever going to be even slightly interesting. Nice that Pa Salieu's straight outta jail album got a nod but this is all such dullardry

imago, Wednesday, 10 September 2025 10:31 (nine months ago)

Cowley is very much not my bag sorry! :D

Composition 40b (Stew), Wednesday, 10 September 2025 10:39 (nine months ago)

The £220 + VAT entry fee (to cover "administration") understandably puts people off. The chances of anything remotely left field getting nominated means you'd be better off spending that on lottery tickets.

Composition 40b (Stew), Wednesday, 10 September 2025 10:43 (nine months ago)

re: The £220 + VAT entry fee (to cover "administration") understandably puts people off.

They never publish the full list of albums entered, if your paying that amount, there should be some acknowledgement and thanks.

djmartian, Wednesday, 10 September 2025 10:51 (nine months ago)

I agree, but it would reveal how much they're making on this.
I've had my criticisms of the Scottish Album of the Year Awards, but at least it's free to enter, anyone can nominate a record etc. Mercury seem to have borrowed their model of moving around different cities/towns. I think this can be positive in certain respects, but it's no substitute for sustained support for local scenes and venues. In Newcastle, the New Labour era arts centre, which hoovers up most of the arts funding round here, is promoting some "Mercury associated" artists. There's also a "fringe" of smaller gigs and music industry events around the city, but the DIY/grassroots folks are not invited to the party.

Composition 40b (Stew), Wednesday, 10 September 2025 11:04 (nine months ago)

Martin Carthy! First time someone my grandfather sung with in pubs has been nominated. This is a step in the right direction!

In the since-passed window when I grudgingly tried to use instagram with any regularity I halfheartedly followed Radio 6 and their CMAT posts were at the top of the page every time. I don't know her music but considering this is their second nomination in a row I'm guessing she's the current musician that the usual channels are trying awfully hard to make happen ? ('Cus my radar is pretty rock-covered so for me to even notice etc etc) Or maybe she is genuinely really popular idk. Sam Fender feels like someone who was gifted that model of buzz who then became, and remains, as popular as someone like him can be (despite the utter dreariness of the music ahem) - like, Radio 6 were there first maybe, but just wait til you get that Dec from Ant & Dec approval.

you can see me from westbury white horse, Wednesday, 10 September 2025 11:39 (nine months ago)

The first time I heard CMAT I was so massively underwhelmed, like... Is this what we're meant to be excited over?

I thought Sam Fender had proper "indie cred" but he's got a single out with Olivia Dean, what's going on there? I get the impression he's generally quite right-on but it's a shame about the music

boxedjoy, Wednesday, 10 September 2025 13:33 (nine months ago)

Might have a flutter on CMAT.
