The Ideal Rock Star

Tell me about your ideal rock star. But here's the catch - no proper names: I don't want comparisons or mix-and-match "Liquid Dreams" style creations, I want a description of what a rock star should do or be to make you, o poster, like them.

Polysexaully perserve. A taste for certain drugs. A large self destructive streak. Some messianic tendency. A peroid where he retreats from the world. And he has to die in a very sad and immeidate way.

and a long schlong

Geoff, Thursday, 30 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

anthony, Thursday, 30 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

This has turned into the 'Describe Iggy Pop' thread...

Ideal rockstar: can change gender at will. Also possibly a robot, but no one knows for certain,

First of all, they have to *look* like a rock star. Yes, that is shallow, but visual appeal is part of what turns a common or garden musician into a Star. I want a rock star who is *not* classically handsome, but who has more than enough charsima to make you believe that they are the most beautiful person to ever walk the earth. A dark Byronic streak of moodiness or self loathing mixed in with the charisma certainly helps that.

They have to behave like a star. And this does not mean simply bad behaviour involving sex and drugs, though Dionysian decadence certainly helps. What makes a star a star is their total *alienness*. Of course they seem glamourous while engaging in their Freudian sex and death dances- a true rock star is the one who still seems somehow alien and seems to transcend common human nature, even as they are wrapping themselves in the most normal of activities. Anyone can look like a not quite human god alien while on stage- a true rock star appears even more like a not quite human god alien the more mundane the activity they engage in.

Yet at the same time, a rock star must seem to be just enough like me, the fan, in order to make me believe that in some alternate universe, that could be me. Contradictions like that are at the heart of the rock star myth.

You will notice that I've said nothing about the music. Music is for musicians. Rock stars are something else... it helps if they are a good musician, but they are not necessarily the same thing.

The Ideal Rock Star - me, of course, so I can go on SM:TV and be rude to Ant & Dec. Buy my records (if I had any)!

DG, Thursday, 30 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Kate, you have just described Julian Casablancas.

Andrew Williams, Thursday, 30 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

No rock stars in the 21st century! bury that prehistoric shit.

duane, Thursday, 30 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Julian Casablancas is just about the diametric opposite to what I have just described.

But, it only goes to show that half the idea of "rock star" is in the projection *you* place upon it.

Kate the Saint, Thursday, 30 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Slipknot

The 'IRS' should have an agenda so expertly hidden that it only becomes clear long after they've stopped recording.

dave q, Thursday, 30 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

What Anthony says, but I'd like to add a wardrobe full of either glitter or leather and fishnets.

Lyra, Thursday, 30 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

DG stole my answer, the bastard. I'd aim to be more bendable for on-stage antics.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 30 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Well, the ideal of a rock star is completely different from ideal musician (ie. German electro boffin looking suspiciously like Jan St. Werner, ah-hum, hello there Mr St. Werner)

Rock Star:

Obviously number one thing must be to make good music. This should go without saying. You can make as many attempts as you like to walk the walk but if you can't sing the song then you're outta here...

As Kate said, best not to be conventionally beautiful- perfection is ultimate paradox [perfection=bland=not perfection].

Behaviour is childishly obnoxious yet ever obliging. The sheer factor of not being afraid to look like an asshole rendering you incapable of asshole-esque qualities (ie Getting Away With It).

Oh, and you have to be American, sorry.

And want to sleep with me.

It's that last bit that always gets 'em. Damn.

emil.y, Thursday, 30 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

But are you worth sleeping with?

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 30 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Probably not, as I'd only be really bloody miserable and talk incessantly about my ex boyfriend and then start crying.

Of course, they could always sleep with me once and then fuck off back to America.

Ah well.

emil.y, Thursday, 30 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Look good in leather jeans and never be seen in leather jeans.

Curt, Thursday, 30 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)
