this one ofr the londoners out there.... i have a preset on my stereo at 94.9 fm. before a owent to russia, this = GLR. which i reckoned was the best radio station around, generally.

i come back and now theres still a radio station there, only no mention of GLR. its now called something like 'london live' or some shit.

i remember ages ago there was a huge furore about the BBC getting rid of GLR and loads of worthies trying to save it. is this new 'london live', the dead GLR? i rpesume so...if so, is it just a simple rebranding or essentially a new station, in terms of presenters, music policy etc etc?

GLR was good, but for one show alone. Gary Crowley on Sunday afternoons. Primarily an indie show but not purely indie, i.e. he played quite a bit of dance and hip-hop stuff as well. GLR deserved to die for allowing Emma Freud to have a show and also for bolstering the career of one Chris Evans.

I think the original plan for London Live was a clean break from GLR - no music, more consumer affairs etc. After big uproar - inc hilarious article by a BBC radio boss accusing GLR of playing Mambo No 5 (as if) instead of covering a train crash (he'd actually tuned in to Capital) - they went for a compromise: no music at breakfast, mid-day and "drivetime". They kept lots of presenters, including Robert Elms, Crowley, Laura Lee Davies and Charlie Gillet. Late night shows include Coldcut and Norman Jay. They've recently changed the line-up again, and I'm not really sure whether they're trying to push it further towards the original plan. It's still one of the best stations out there, although the breakfast and lunchtime presenters are bloody awful.

MarkH claimed there was only one good show on GLR - what about Chris Morris and Danny Baker?

Anyone know where Gideon Coe's gone to? I heard him sign off for the last time a few weeks back...

five years pass...
Down the toilet, basically.

The music (and most of the presenters) have been transplanted to 6Music. BBC London 94.9, as it is now cumbersomely known, is essentially Radio 5 Live (London opt-out) in stereo. There are still some ghettoised music slots. Norman Jay and Gary Crowley are still in place. Gillett is ill long-term so various people are covering his show at the moment. Then there is Sean "Guilty Pleasures" Rowley but the less said about him the better.

But Danny Baker is still there and he's genius. And Sean Rowley's midnight show on Sat night is also very good (although I agree about the Guilty Pleasures © tedium. Most of the rest is, indeed, terrible, exemplified by the dread presence of 'Jono' Coleman on the breakfast show.
