I prefer the Tape Beatles

that's because you smoke the crack roc k.

i prefer herbert too, because i prefer slinky house music to idm. (and yes we can get into all sorts of arguments about how matmos isnt idm, and how herberts work can veer just as close to blah blah blah, i don't care.) the fact that he samples from all kindsa crazy sources is just gravy. i think the best matmos album is "the west," which is a fine, fine album, but i like it for it's mutant country- meets-musique concrete vibe rather than the beatz.

Matmos of course! They sampled a crayfish's nerve tissue & synapse then amplified it to gain a bassline.

I don't know. Both of their albums are among my favorites this year.

Outside in the full sunshine it was a bit strange seeing all the clubbhedz but he was great. Twiddling and diddling. He had a singer who sang on many songs, and she contributed vocal effects that Herbert bent like putty, repeated, filigreed, sped up, and tweaked into the mix. She flicked her uppers with thumbnail - "click" - and that became the main 2 and 4 snare beat in the song that was playing. Neat.

Altho my favorite part of the day = when warmup DJ played the electric slide, cool Kangol and Converse dyke with shades showed everybody the moves, to huge applause.

my housemate urges me to mention that every now and again Herbert actually hit the several mics on stage with CD cases and a ping-pong paddle type device. which led, inevitably, to bouncy reverbing craziness. (he insisted i use the word "bouncy". bouncy bouncy bouncy bouncy)
