Patriotism

Listened to Dreadzone's a Canterbury tale on second light and found myself quite moved by the wistful patriotism and it's sense of a shared community in it. All the more moving because it seems to be inclusive and tolerant rather than jingoistic or xenophobic.

Is this an exception or is music with any sense of a love for a country burdened by the need to exclude other peoples?

I dunno - kinda obvious - but Woody Guthrie seems to come to mind. Didn't someone also set James Baldwin quotes on the subject of patriotism to music once?

William Burroughs had some God Bless America thing. About as patriotic as "Born In The USA"!

Is this the right time to mention Ultramarine's "United Kingdoms"? Now *there's* a record that cuts through Billy's false dichotomy at a stroke.

fourteen years pass...

God bless all here. I've been avoiding town successfully. Best analysis of the 16 rising I've heard came from Ken early ffs.
