something used of theirs turned up in my local record emporium. i remember someone, somwhere, on here saying that they were in the neighborhood of early post-rock (reynolds-style, rather than thrill jockey.) should i pick this up today?

new answers of distinction. you have 2 hours to convince me one way or t'other.

Pick it up by all means without delay. And if you don't believe me, FINE. But let my reviews tell you more if you like (I wrote on all the albums except the last one and a slew of the singles). If it's Love is Hell or The Death of Cool in particular, run don't walk.

I second Ned on Death of Cool. Really, really amazing, and the quality's even more apparent as time goes on.

Quick! Get it before someone else who fell in love with their dreamy, captive sound and homo-lyrical longings finds it! Sigh - I remember this being part of my rainy-night-drink-a-bottle-of-red repretoire.

no idea what reynolds style post-rock is but julian swales could make his guitar shimmer like no one else. he had the most impressive effects pedal set-up since kevin shields. anyone have the stephen hero records? the fruit cd was poor. strange free world is my favorite.

the only song of theirs i can remember offhand is 'the 3rd time we opened the capsule'. and that is definitely worth picking up

gareth, Monday, 24 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

jess, Monday, 24 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Their 'Prize' (off Love is Hell) is a sort of 'Do you remember the first time?' that mainlines its emotional epiphany straight to the heart. Can't remember Patrick Kitchen's new band....

Eamonn MAher, Tuesday, 25 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

gah. good. so good. has entered the work rotation (along with the necks' "sex," the new beta band, oh and "the blueprint" of course, just to freak my co-workers out.) ;)

eight years pass...

Combing through my MP3s, I have a song from them called "Fear Stink #1" for which I can't find anyting on th' Internets. It's definitely Patrick singing, is it a Kitchens song or something else he did? Anyone know where it comes from?

Gerald McBoing-Boing, Saturday, 7 November 2009 16:22 (sixteen years ago)

Hmm, even I don't have this one. A solo cut, possibly.

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 7 November 2009 17:25 (sixteen years ago)

Didn't he release something under the name Fruit after KoD broke up?

Alex in NYC, Saturday, 7 November 2009 19:20 (sixteen years ago)

Yes, he did a single, EP and album as Fruit, all fairly unremarkable. Much better though inconsistent is Stephen Hero, who have a new album coming out any day now. Their last one, "57 Stars Of The Air Almanac", is the best thing he's done since Kitchens.

Anyway, here's the song in question - please give it a listen, maybe it's mistitled:

haven't heard this track before... but it definitely sounds like a stephenhero track on account of the rhodes piano and jazzy rhythms.

Excited about the new album.... Gerald is right about the last one..

Just read that Patrick had a kidney transplant last year... Glad to see he recovered from that..

Kitchens are the only band I would love to see reform (Magazine was the other one), but I don't think this will ever happen...
