Crammed Records 1977-1988 re-issues

So far I've picked up Tuxedomoon's 'Desire' - which after some initial reluctance is quickly turning into one of my favorite album, like ever - and Sonoko's 'La Debutante', which is a bit too sickly-sweet to my ears.
The 3-CD label compilation shoudl also land shortly in my mailbox.
Any other onsight/recommendation?

i'd say get SUSSAN DEYHIM / RICHARD HOROWITZ Desert Equations (1987) but i've never actually heard it. that record they did about 5 yrears ago is killer.

Yes, I've read good things about that one, but I've never seen in a store..

Baaderist (Fabfunk), Monday, 12 January 2004 10:58 (twenty-two years ago)

majoun. if you see it buy it! also madman of god is good.

mullygrubber (gaz), Monday, 12 January 2004 11:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Majoun passionately seconded, it's always impressed me lots more than Desert Equations, though the earlier alb. is pretty good as well.

Tuxedomoon's "Half-Mute" is even better than "Desire". Sainkho Namchylak's "Out of Tuva" (on the Cramworld subsidiary) is worth a listen as well.

Yes, but it seems this one hasn't been re-issued. I've been looking around for it but no luck so far.

Forced Exposure have it for sale:

Thanks! Unfort. I don't have a turntable anymore..

Baaderist (Fabfunk), Monday, 12 January 2004 16:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Didn't they reissue the Young Marble Giants CD, the one with everything on it?

donut bitch (donut), Monday, 12 January 2004 20:09 (twenty-two years ago)

OK, I finally received the 3-CD label compilation, 'Global Soundclash'. I've only listened to the 1st, world fusion, CD, but this is truly fantastic stuff!!
I'm pleasantly surprised by the Hector Zazou material.

Baaderist (Fabfunk), Thursday, 15 January 2004 13:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Hector Zazou's 'Reivax Au Bongo', seriously great album... 'Noir et Blanc' too...

here are the reissue covers (scroll down) http://www.crammed.be/crammed/soundclash/

also here's the web overview of the original classic Made to Measure series:

>SUSSAN DEYHIM / RICHARD HOROWITZ Desert Equations (1987)

I love 'Majoun' too, they had a budget and the production is insane, merging western and eastern orchestral parts together seamlessly, there's almost nothing like that record. 'Desert Equations: Azax Attra' is much more of a band recording, a lot of recognizable late 80's drum and synth sounds, but Deyhim FLIPS OUT on this record, still coming out of Persian classical but also close to Galas or Ono. Though no one sounds like her really. The production might not be as polished as 'Majoun' (though I like it, it's got tension, it doesn't sound normal), but the earlier record's vocals are ten times as intense. Buy on sight. (I need to find a copy of 'Madmen of God'.)

Also Aksaq Maboul, both of their albums, impossible to quickly categorize other than RIO, absolutely wonderful...

I've been downloading heaps of stuff from them via emusic.

"Global Soundclash" is a great place to start, but so far I've found very little that I dislike from this label (bought some things of theirs back in the day). You have to get the Honeymoon Killers album, too. Aksak Maboul is also excellent.

I like the Honeymoon Killers album... not as much as Maboul but it was a very interesting way for them to add vocals. And the CD adds twenty minutes of a scorchin' room recording of a Maboul live gig

I also bought Deyhim's Madmen of God... ever closer to straight Persian classical. I like it but I like the earlier hybrid too.

The only one of these that I've heard and not liked is the Sonoko record -- produced by Colin Newman and Maboul, but her voice is very singsongy and evaded me every time. Haven't heard Karl Biscuit or Bel Canto. Absolutely every other record in the series, I love / cherish / unhesitatingly recommend.

I think Colin Newman's Commercial Suicide (1986) was one of the reissues. His best solo album!

between that, the first He Said album, and the Wire SnakeDrill EP, 1986 was the best year for Wire since 1979.

They have a thread of their own, but first up on your list should be Tuxedomoon's 'Desire' (altho not very representative of the general Crammed sound)

baaderonixx, Tuesday, 18 December 2007 23:08 (eighteen years ago)

Sussan Deyhim & Richard Horowitz bore me though.

baaderonixx, Tuesday, 18 December 2007 23:08 (eighteen years ago)

I associate both of the Tuxedomoon records with Ralph Records, but they'd have been on this list if I didn't

if you've gotten to a point where Deyhim's "I'm A Man" bores you, I'll have what you're having
