A popular Viennese singer called Wolfgang Ambros also released an album of Waits cover versions last year, with the lyrics adapted and translated into German.

I heard it, and it was awful.. but it sold loads and loads and probably made Tom a big pile'o'cash...

The Ambros cd is not awful, and the songs were even better live. Neither that cd nor this one are in "proper" High German -- Ambros sings in the Viennese dialect and this obvious rip-off sings in Kölsch, the dialect of Cologne (which sounds like drunken Dutchmen). There's actually a long tradition of Cologne dialect acts ripping off/paying tribute to Ambros -- see Black Föös, BÄP, etc. "Waits Babbelt Hessisch" is sure to follow.
