Isn't this how simmering resentments and outright hostilities are settled? Well, wing your jangles!

I can pretty much guess exactly how this is going to split ILM and even though I think Marquee Moon is a good album I am proudly on the Orange Juice side.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Monday, 12 January 2004 17:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Orange Juice, even tho' television are/were great. My first piece of saddo fanboy autograph-hunting = orange juice signing my copy of the "felicity" 7" at newcastle virgin shop!!

UK vs US?

I'm born in the USA so I go for Television...

I'm born in the USA so I don't even get the comparison.

I've never heard Orange Juice, is that the "Never Met a Girl LIke YOu Before" guy?

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Monday, 12 January 2004 17:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Edwyn Collins, yes.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Monday, 12 January 2004 17:49 (twenty-two years ago)

I've never heard Orange Juice

haha - just realized the silliness of posting of this thread, hell they could be the greatest musical artists of all time for all I know.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Monday, 12 January 2004 17:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Orange Juice!

LondonLee (LondonLee), Monday, 12 January 2004 17:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, it was very patriotic of you, soldier.

I like Marquee Moon and all, but I certainly prefer Orange Juice.

scott pl. (scott pl.), Monday, 12 January 2004 18:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Television by a million miles, and I'm 'English'.

Andrew L (Andrew L), Monday, 12 January 2004 18:24 (twenty-two years ago)

But Orange Juice are "Scottish".

Orange Juice all the way. I was the only person to turn up when Edwyn Collins did an album signing for "Hellbent on Compromise" at Our Price in Inverness. I had a bagful of Orange Juice singles and albums, but obviously he had time to sign them all.

ailsa (ailsa), Monday, 12 January 2004 18:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Marquee Moon is far better than any OJ album (and anything else Television did). OJ's best album, Ostrich Churchyard*, didn't come out until 93; yes, it was YCHYLF, but without the interference of Polydor...best moment on the album is of course when Edwyn rhymes discoteque with acute regret, a gorgeous dust up between Chic and the Buzzcocks.
I do have a suspicion, however, that people might prefer OJ as more of the bands they like are influenced by OJ than by Television. But Marquee Moon rules. Tom Verlaine once ran up to Lawrence after a Felt gig to shake his hand. According to TV's girlfriend at the time, this was the only time's he been so enthusiastic at a gig.
*Ostrich Churchyard features a version of Vic Godard's Holiday Hymn. Which is better than the mighty Godard's version. If anyone would care to conflate the Godard and Felt threads with this one, you're under starters order.

Canada Briggs (Canada Briggs), Monday, 12 January 2004 19:45 (twenty-two years ago)

I'd like to stand up for later OJ and say I really like "Texas Fever" and think "What Presence?" is one of their best singles (especially the 12").

LondonLee (LondonLee), Monday, 12 January 2004 19:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Aaaaaaaaaaarrrrggghhhh! No! Don't make me choose, please!

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Monday, 12 January 2004 20:10 (twenty-two years ago)

televison are dreadful but orange juice is just dull. so orange juice wins. they still retain membership in the most overpraised category with felt and the go-betweens.

keith m (keithmcl), Monday, 12 January 2004 22:19 (twenty-two years ago)

keith you officially have no soul. "ostrich churchyard" and "the heather's on fire" are two of my most prized and loved records ever.

the surface noise (electricsound), Monday, 12 January 2004 22:27 (twenty-two years ago)

and that they're out of print is CRIMINAL

the surface noise (electricsound), Monday, 12 January 2004 22:27 (twenty-two years ago)

the surface noise entirely OTM. Another vote for Orange Juice here!

On reading the thread title, I guessed TV would have wiped the floor with OJ. They did have fairly similar career trajectories, what with it all falling apart within a couple of years, i guess?

Nag! Nag! Nag! (Nag! Nag! Nag!), Tuesday, 13 January 2004 04:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Orenthal James kills the Tranvestites (though I did try hard to like Marquee Moon).

Le Coq (DarrenK), Tuesday, 13 January 2004 04:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Orange Juice at the moment, but Television has probably influenced my life more as a whole.

Maxwell von Bismarck (maxwell von bismarck), Tuesday, 13 January 2004 04:35 (twenty-two years ago)

both are responsible for Interpol in a roundabout sort of way

the surface noise (electricsound), Tuesday, 13 January 2004 04:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Television by a long shot.

jack cole (jackcole), Tuesday, 13 January 2004 05:39 (twenty-two years ago)

I like Orange Juice, and back in the day we all got inspired to get up and do stuff because of them.

But no television, no marquee moon, no me.

TELEVISION!

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 13 January 2004 09:56 (twenty-two years ago)

This thread made me remember this one: Josef K - Classic or Dud (Three years ago almost!) because in my mind Television occupy a similar kind of place to Josef K.

Few acts ever have stood against rock in as lovable a way as Orange Juice did.

Tim (Tim), Tuesday, 13 January 2004 10:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Orange Juice, every time. There are few records I regret selling more than Ostrich Churchyard.

Jim Eaton-Terry (Jim E-T), Tuesday, 13 January 2004 10:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Television will rot your brain, but orange juice is healthy and full of vitamin C.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Tuesday, 13 January 2004 10:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Both groups accomplished everything they needed to with their first few singles & album (although I do love Texas Fever)

On the subject of Lawrence - there is a track on Adventure (can't remember the title) that is basically Felt's entire 10 year output in 2 & a half minutes.

bham, Tuesday, 13 January 2004 10:49 (twenty-two years ago)

I am pretty sure that Edwyn Collins prefers Television to Orange Juice.
