So, by buying the Franz Ferdinand single now, we can get a good number one single for the first time since "Ghost Town".

yeah?

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 13 January 2004 12:05 (twenty-two years ago)

No, because there have been lots of good number ones since then.

But we can get a significantly superior number one to that which currently resides atop the charts.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Tuesday, 13 January 2004 12:07 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm really pleased that the full-whack of industry/press hype seems to be aimed, for the first time in bloody ages, at a band who *might* actually deliver something interesting, fun and perhaps even innovative. I hope the "UK Strokes" tag doesn't stick, it makes FF sound fucking lame, which they're clearly not - and I quite like(d) The Strokes...

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Tuesday, 13 January 2004 12:10 (twenty-two years ago)

I hate the Strokes, but like proper post-punk. Will I like FF?

Enrique (Enrique), Tuesday, 13 January 2004 12:13 (twenty-two years ago)

The first thirty seconds of Take Me Out does sound like The Strokes though, but in a good way. It then opens into the mahoussive stopming bit that doesn't sound like the Strokes but is actually even better.

Also - FF at #1 would mean a #1 for Domino Records. Domino "Bonnie Prince Billy, Smog, Clinic, Woodbine, Clearlake, Matt Elliott, Four Tet, Sebadoh, King Creosote, James Yorkston, Papa M, etc, etc" Records.

This could be the greatest thing ever, sort of.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Tuesday, 13 January 2004 12:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Go and buy it, yeah, but you'd get an even better number one if you all bought "The Funeral of Hearts".

edward o (edwardo), Tuesday, 13 January 2004 12:14 (twenty-two years ago)

but that's not going to happen. Not this week anyway.

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 13 January 2004 12:15 (twenty-two years ago)

It'll be the best no.1 since Will Young by my reckoning.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Tuesday, 13 January 2004 12:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Which isn't to say it's good, cos it's not really.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Tuesday, 13 January 2004 12:16 (twenty-two years ago)

the last decent number 1 was firestarter by the prodigy. That was back in 1996.

DJ Martian (djmartian), Tuesday, 13 January 2004 12:19 (twenty-two years ago)

But Martian, if things swing at this rate, MBICR might be an outside bet for Best Rock at the Brits in 2008...

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Tuesday, 13 January 2004 12:20 (twenty-two years ago)

things will only change if 6 music and radio 1 are controlled by me.

DJ Martian (djmartian), Tuesday, 13 January 2004 12:23 (twenty-two years ago)

I've just bought it for two of my English pounds, having never heard the record before. I'm about to listen to it for the first time. This had better be good.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 13 January 2004 13:59 (twenty-two years ago)

drums roll ....

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 13 January 2004 14:03 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm mildly amazed that I actually like this.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 13 January 2004 14:04 (twenty-two years ago)

NME claimed they would 'change your life' on their front cover last week...

...

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 13 January 2004 14:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Crowd cheers, band continues to play, children dance...

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 13 January 2004 14:04 (twenty-two years ago)

They have. My life now has a Franz Ferdinand single in it. That's about the extent of the change.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 13 January 2004 14:08 (twenty-two years ago)

The Strokes intro is more of a throwaway 'haha look we're the British Strokes look fuzz on the vocals and every- nah we're just shittin' yer' thing rather than an actual component of the song isn't it? I gather it tends to get excised from most of the radio plays.

I'm not sure I want to like FF but I do really like this. It's uh, not actually going to get anywhere near number one or anything is it?

FF sound like an indie band that have heard a bit of Proper Postpunk rather than sounding exactly like Proper Postpunk. But then that's what most of them are like.

Ferrrrrrg (Ferg), Tuesday, 13 January 2004 14:12 (twenty-two years ago)

You have no idea how much I wanted to dislike this song. It's probably the best Number One since Slow.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 13 January 2004 14:14 (twenty-two years ago)

From a personal point of view, this also means that SOMETHING MIGHT HAPPEN IN THE ALBUM CHART, which is quite exciting (this week - Alistair Griffin at #7. Good grief...)

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Tuesday, 13 January 2004 14:45 (twenty-two years ago)

For an indie Strokes-like thing, it's pretty good. It stomps. Stomping is always a good thing.

edward o (edwardo), Tuesday, 13 January 2004 14:49 (twenty-two years ago)

NUMBER ONE?

Is this like last weeks Jaxx wind-up?

I mean I like it and all; but, really?

Does this mean that poeple wil start buying Josef K, The Fire Engines and The Yummy Fur re-issues?

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Tuesday, 13 January 2004 22:33 (twenty-two years ago)

#2 in the midweeks apparently. However, this is nearly seven years to the day of The Bluetones charting at #2.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 13 January 2004 22:36 (twenty-two years ago)

http://www.robertkilroysilk.com/Franz%2BFerdinand%2BFor%2BNumber%2BOne/Is%2BThis%2BLike%2BLast%2BWeeks%2BJaxx%2BWind-up/

I was going to mention The Bluetones, slow time of year and all.

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Tuesday, 13 January 2004 22:39 (twenty-two years ago)

http://www.robertkilroysilk.com/Franz%2BFerdinand%2BFor%2BNumber%2BOne/Is%2BThis%2BLike%2BLast%2BWeeks%2BJaxx%2BWind-up/

second attempt or quits.

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Tuesday, 13 January 2004 22:40 (twenty-two years ago)

how do we find out how the single's
selling on a day by day basis ?
is there a site 4 this ?

piscesboy, Wednesday, 14 January 2004 15:10 (twenty-two years ago)

#2 midweek? Holy shit, even to get in the top 3 would be an amazing result!

Chris Jones (Crackity Jones), Wednesday, 14 January 2004 16:02 (twenty-two years ago)

number one would mean the world is changing...

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 14 January 2004 16:07 (twenty-two years ago)

I somehow doubt that.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 14 January 2004 16:15 (twenty-two years ago)

When Britney kept Blur off with "baby one more time", the world changed 'this' way. And now it could change 'that' way.

Or everyone could ignore it like when Iron Maiden got to no 1.

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 14 January 2004 16:45 (twenty-two years ago)

But Baby One More Time was better than Tender!

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 14 January 2004 16:48 (twenty-two years ago)

both were great.

the world changed, a little.

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 14 January 2004 16:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Take Me Out is better than All This Time.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Wednesday, 14 January 2004 21:45 (twenty-two years ago)

i've just missed the point completely, haven't I?

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Wednesday, 14 January 2004 21:46 (twenty-two years ago)

i think you got the point just right.

jed_ (jed), Wednesday, 14 January 2004 22:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Does this mean that poeple wil start buying Josef K, The Fire Engines and The Yummy Fur re-issues?

One can only hope. Not so much the single, but the album as a whole really reminds me of Josef K.

Ryan WS (fffv), Thursday, 15 January 2004 01:09 (twenty-two years ago)

are there... Yummy Fur... re-issues?!

cozen (Cozen), Thursday, 15 January 2004 01:33 (twenty-two years ago)

I was about to say, where? Gimme.

"Police-MAN!"

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 15 January 2004 01:39 (twenty-two years ago)

i just saw this franz ferdinand video on cd:uk this is the first time i'd heard it. midway through song it changes melody / tune altogether and i can't for the life of me remember what it sounded like in the first section. i expect the same will happen with the second section as soon as this next song kicks in. i really loved the way they move in the video tho. more bands that sound like this on telly yeah! but not ff, unfortunately.

'just josef k in the charts' = lame-o
'josef k in the charts + all that other stuff' = k-classixor

whose idea was this, hm, mr morley, happy now?

cozen (Cozen), Thursday, 15 January 2004 01:42 (twenty-two years ago)

is this a joke?

gareth (gareth), Thursday, 15 January 2004 01:48 (twenty-two years ago)

hope you're not being snarky there g-man

the surface noise (electricsound), Thursday, 15 January 2004 02:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Hey, dont forget now...

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 16 January 2004 14:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Ach, number three. Oh well, glad to have you there anyway...

mark grout (mark grout), Sunday, 18 January 2004 21:28 (twenty-two years ago)

when did Maiden go to #1??

roger adultery (roger adultery), Sunday, 18 January 2004 22:54 (twenty-two years ago)

coupla years back

the surface noise (electricsound), Sunday, 18 January 2004 22:57 (twenty-two years ago)

1990

stevem (blueski), Sunday, 18 January 2004 23:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, whatever else about Franz Ferdinand, the Alex guy from the band just shot up high in my estimation for an article forwarded to me that ran in the NME where he talks about his passionate love for Sparks. A very good sign (I hope) for the music.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 19 January 2004 15:20 (twenty-two years ago)

I really really feel stupid for asking this, but what exactly is the name of the song? Franz Ferdinand is the name of the band, right? And the song is called...?

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 04:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Hmmmm. No answer. I guess nobody knows.

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 05:37 (twenty-two years ago)

"all this time"

the surface noise (electricsound), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 05:39 (twenty-two years ago)

er no i mean "take me out"

the surface noise (electricsound), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 05:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Sorry, what makes this song so much better than any of the other shit guitar bands out there?

Incidentally, my dad was watching the video and he asked me "so is this all electronic music then?"

dog latin (dog latin), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 10:42 (twenty-two years ago)

this sounds a bit like peter gabriel doing 'eye of the tiger'

prima fassy (bob), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 13:08 (twenty-two years ago)

you made me listen to it again

cozen (Cozen), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 19:25 (twenty-two years ago)

three weeks pass...
anyone else notice that in the text for 'MICHAEL'
in the cd book there's a line crossed out
by a typed row of XXXXXXXXs. it says (just after the bit that goes 'come and dance with me, come and dance with me...')
' come all over me'. it's a tough job to see it, and you need to squint but it definitely changes the song from something 'homo-erotic'
to something more actually 'homosexual'.

piscesboy, Monday, 16 February 2004 17:27 (twenty-two years ago)

I just picked up the album today, and am thoroughly digging it, especially "Take Me Out". I know it's already been beaten to death, but they are SO much more inventive/capable than the Strokes.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 16 February 2004 19:01 (twenty-two years ago)

But not necessarily as much fun.

morris pavilion (samjeff), Monday, 16 February 2004 20:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Maybe no necessarily, not, but they do have a knack with a hook, a nice sharp guitar sounds. I'm not dumpin' on the Strokes, mind you.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 16 February 2004 23:48 (twenty-two years ago)

I think the new strokes album is underrated.

The Franz album, played it once so far (a bit backed up with new stuff (for once!) at the moment), quite liked it but the live album freebie is not as great as it's existance would suggest.

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 09:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Can I say "post-punk Divine Comedy" now, please?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 10:46 (twenty-two years ago)

no

the surface noise (electricsound), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 10:48 (twenty-two years ago)

That description fits Alex's previous band, The Karelia, better, Matt.

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 10:48 (twenty-two years ago)

i liked the karelia :(

the surface noise (electricsound), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 10:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, "Michael" is quite possibly the gayest song in the world, but let's face it....it rocks!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 15:28 (twenty-two years ago)
