Songs Where You Respect the Singer/Writer for their Honesty

do you like any songs where, whilst you regard the sentiment expressed within as cruel, insensitive, perhaps even reactionary, you still end up respecting the singer and/or writer for actually coming out and saying what they do?

I've been listening to "Senile Get" recently by Julian Cope and feel that way about it. Do you know this song? It is about his wife's granny.

It is about his wife's granny.

Isn't the instrumental, "Lelli B" on 20 Mothers also about said woman (in as much as an instrumental can be "about" something)?

I can't remember, you may be right Alex, but I will have to go back and look at the sleevenotes to be sure.

It's not extraordinary cruelty/insensitivity, but Richard Thompson's "End of the Rainbow", sung to a small child, has a lovely sentiment:

"All the sad and empty faces
That pass you on the street
All running in their sleep, all in a dream
Every loving handshake
Is just another man to beat
How your heart aches just to cut him to the core

Life seems so rosy in the cradle,
But I'll be a friend I'll tell you what's in store
There's nothing at the end of the rainbow.
There's nothing to grow up for anymore."

Alt-Country/Americana overearnest confessionals to thread. No, not really.
I think honest/integrity as a commodity is pretty lousy.

Morrissey on "November Spawned a Monster". I think we've argued about this before (whether he's sympathising or repulsed), but not many people write about retards.

On most of Pinkerton, Rivers ends up coming off more as a shitty boyfriend than a victim, particularly in the song "butterfly". Despite its cheesiness, it gives me more respect for him. or at least it did until he started to brag that his new material had no emotional investment.

Randy Newman to thread. And he can bring Jarvis Cocker, too.

Honesty is such a lonely word, everyone is so untrue

Zeno, Sunday, 12 July 2009 21:45 (sixteen years ago)

There's lots of song where I respect the songwriter for being honest in the sense of confessing weakness and/or vulnerability, e.g., Jackson Browne's These Days ("Please don't confront me with my failures . . . I'm aware of them").
