so a friend and i are gonna be in tokyo jan 15th-feb 3rd....and we wanna see the boredoms in japan if we can.

but for some reason our amazing web search skills have led us into absolutely zero knowledge of if they're even touring or not right now.

nancy b. (nancy b.), Wednesday, 14 January 2004 00:13 (twenty-two years ago)

any leads?

nancy b. (nancy b.), Wednesday, 14 January 2004 00:13 (twenty-two years ago)

I'd say your chances are not good.

nancy b. (nancy b.), Wednesday, 14 January 2004 00:19 (twenty-two years ago)

I thought they broke up, fragmented into lots of other projects. Where are all our contributors who live in Japan?

Rockist Scientist (rockistscientist), Wednesday, 14 January 2004 00:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Debito lives in Japan, but I think that gygax! is actually the resident expert on this.

Fat Alberet (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 14 January 2004 00:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Fat Alberet, you've been going through a lot of name changes lately. Are you okay?

Rockist Scientist (rockistscientist), Wednesday, 14 January 2004 00:32 (twenty-two years ago)

You mean am I having an identity crisis?

Somewhat.

Fat Alberet (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 14 January 2004 00:34 (twenty-two years ago)

They're playing at the UK ATP in March. I know that much.

dean! (deangulberry), Wednesday, 14 January 2004 00:35 (twenty-two years ago)

we'd love a side project. times ten. just something.

nancy b. (nancy b.), Wednesday, 14 January 2004 00:37 (twenty-two years ago)

ooioo might be playing somewhere?

dean! (deangulberry), Wednesday, 14 January 2004 00:45 (twenty-two years ago)

we've looked. and looked. and looked. but no signs.

nancy b. (nancy b.), Wednesday, 14 January 2004 00:47 (twenty-two years ago)

The Boredoms broke up in 1998 after what the band considered to be their most perfect musical performance ever at the Fuji-Rock festival.

The Boredoms S/D thread (circa April/May 2003) has a lot of the rundown on the current band sideprojects.

"The Boredoms" only exists in the minds of the ATP folk and equally opportunistic booking agents in USA/Europe. This band is actually known in Japan as The "VOOredoms" (or a variation of, the band changes their name regularly).

The V??REDOMS played New Years Eve in Yokohama, and later eYe DJ-d a set at shinjyuku liquid room in Tokyo.

However, the majority of the band lives in Kyoto... far to the South of Tokyo on the main island of Japan (Honshu). It's a 2.5 hour ride by bullet train (shinkansen) and is about $200 roundtrip. Or you can take overnight bus which'll run you about $135 roundtrip.

I will take a look sometime tonight and see if anything Boredoms related is happening in metro Tokyo in the next couple weeks.

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 14 January 2004 00:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Sorry, the majority of the band lives in Osaka (near Kyoto)... Yamamoto Seiichi has a club named Bears there for live music.

eYe was living in Okinawa for a spell but he apparently is in many places at once.

http://www.japanimprov.com/ is another good site site for finding out about weird shit happening in Japan, although it's more about the improv / experimental kinda stuff.

udu wudu (udu wudu), Wednesday, 14 January 2004 01:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Wow. They don't fuck around with the eclecticism, do they? Brian Setzer, Sham 69, Korn, and JESUS JONES (?!) all at the same festival?

Nancy, can I come with you? I'd like to see Belle and Sebasti-o near Tokyo.

Ben Boyer (Ben Boyer), Wednesday, 14 January 2004 01:47 (twenty-two years ago)

dleone to the rescue.

"The Boredoms broke up in 1998"
gygax! (gygax0...), January 14th, 2004. (tracklink)

I saw them in Irvine on July 4, '99 at the "this ain't no picnic" festival. I realize they're still being booked as the "boredoms" stateside even if it's morphed into a different group, but I thought I read somewhere that the concert pic in VCN was from this show, which would seem to give it some legitimacy.

I'm a casual fan - certainly not an expert - so I'm not arguing, just curious about the apparent discrepency.

chëshy f cät, Wednesday, 14 January 2004 03:36 (twenty-two years ago)

I saw them in Irvine on July 4, '99 at the "this ain't no picnic" festival.

Donut Bitch and I were also at that show, great times. It is a strange discrepancy, as noted...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 14 January 2004 03:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, that was my mistake... it was Fuji-Rock 1999. See the Boredoms C/D thread for details.

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 14 January 2004 03:59 (twenty-two years ago)

"It is a strange discrepancy, as noted..."
Ned Raggett (ne...), January 14th, 2004.

yes, even moreso when the word's spelled correctly.

Dammit, this is why I had to start my own board, so I could correct all my f'n spelling errors.

cfc, Wednesday, 14 January 2004 04:02 (twenty-two years ago)

hahah, and hi cfc!!!

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 14 January 2004 04:47 (twenty-two years ago)

gygax is clearly your authority on this.

They are playing as Vooredoms (where oo is the infinity symbol), and played in Glasgow at Instal in November 03. The new format is a three drumkit and eYe with sampler and stuff, as covered in Wire. Whether they plan another change of guise, the long discussed break-up...who knows. I was led to believe they didn't want to use the boredoms name for Glasgow - whether that is true I'm unsure.

Your luck would be in to catch them. I think you'd need to plan your visit around the boredoms, rather than hope to catch them. Good luck.

spencr (___), Wednesday, 14 January 2004 12:08 (twenty-two years ago)

So what exactly am I going to get when I see "The Boredoms" at ATP in March? I don't care who it is so long as it's a blast.

I really wish I'd been a bit older when I saw them on a Friday morning at Glastonbury 1995, so I wouldn't have been so utterly baffled and shellshocked :(

Quoth the boredoms list:

You just missed a Boredoms show in Tokyo, they played
with a 30-piece ochestra, apparently there's talk that
it will be released in the spring. I didn't see it,
but i heard good things.

LSTD (answer) (sexyDancer), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 23:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Have any other details surfaced about this show?

I ask because I know quite a few obsessive Boredoms fans in Tokyo who would definitely have recorded/DV'd such a show and more than likely let me know about it.

mine would be:

but I suspect most folks would pull for a Super Roots on there first . . .

Hanatarash - "4: Aids-a-delic" is the best. and the two Puzzle Punks albums, I never seem to hear much about them. They're not even listed on the allmusic site. 'Unlimited Toothpicker.'

-Onanie Bomb Meets The Sex Pistols.

I like ROVO.

Ian John50n (orion), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 16:52 (twenty-one years ago)

I've a video of a Hanatarash performance: a drummer maintains a repetitive beat while eYe hurls glass bottles at the audience. The audience clears out while eYe continues to throw bottles until every inch of the hall is covered in broken glass. eYe then starts to throw large metal barrels into the space, continuing until the entire hall is filled with metal. The audience peaks in from behind a door at the back. The whole thing takes 45 minutes.

Snappy (sexyDancer), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 17:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Are there any videos of Eye dismembering animal corpses? I think I had part of the video you mention but I think the sound was non synchronous.
