rule: have to be by people who would be expecting a long and fruitful career but never quite managed to make anything quite as good.

(so, most one-or-not-many-off acts/artists do not count)

e.g. "Flagpole Sitta" Harvey Danger.

and then there was...

Terence Trent d'Arby to thread.

Baaderist (Fabfunk), Wednesday, 14 January 2004 15:03 (twenty-two years ago)

In what universe is Terence Trent D'Arby a one-hit wonder?

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 14 January 2004 15:05 (twenty-two years ago)

quite

Baaderist (Fabfunk), Wednesday, 14 January 2004 15:08 (twenty-two years ago)

in what universe did anyone think harvey danger was going to have a long and fruitful career?

fact checking cuz (fcc), Wednesday, 14 January 2004 16:22 (twenty-two years ago)

The one guy from harvey danger is a new band called the winter blanket or something....

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Wednesday, 14 January 2004 16:24 (twenty-two years ago)

fcc, as in the band themselves... I don't know, maybe they were a one-off assemblage to record a good song, i dunno I wasn't there...

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 14 January 2004 16:34 (twenty-two years ago)

OK, "Spaceman" by oh god... nope.

He gave lots of interviews about how great he was and in it for the long haul (mirissa like..) and that was the end of it.

Babylon Zoo. There...

mark - oh. but in that case, what band itself has ever NOT expected a long and fruitful career? i assume everyone from stacey q to third eye blind to lillix thought, when they started out, that there'd be a career in this.

fact checking cuz (fcc), Wednesday, 14 January 2004 16:43 (twenty-two years ago)

mmm yeah, but then they had one big defining hit song and were unfortunate enough for it to be their first and last... (I dunno the three bands you list, is that what happened to them?)

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 14 January 2004 16:47 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm just saying that that would cover ALL one-hit-wonders. all of them had one big defining hit. and all of them were expecting more.

third eye blind was more of a one-album-wonder, with a couple of defining hits, and then ... and then ... and then ... nothing. although stephan jenkins does show up in the gossip columns from time to time.

stacey q had the brilliant "two of hearts" but never became the dance superstar she probably dreamed she'd be. she doesn't even show up in the gossip columns.

lillix are still waiting for the one hit that will make them a one-hit-wonder. for now, they can only dream.

fact checking cuz (fcc), Wednesday, 14 January 2004 16:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Why are you ignoring the fact that the second 3EB album, while not as huge as the first, was still pretty damn big and spawned at least one top 40 hit ("Never Let You Go")?

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 14 January 2004 16:55 (twenty-two years ago)

i apologize to stephan jenkins and wish him a long and fruitful career.

fact checking cuz (fcc), Wednesday, 14 January 2004 16:56 (twenty-two years ago)

(hee hee)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 14 January 2004 16:58 (twenty-two years ago)

the new harvey-danger-related band is the excellent and underappreciated indie-guitar-pop group the Long Winters.

New Radicals, "You Get What You Give."

Sean M (Sean M), Wednesday, 14 January 2004 20:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Blur in America.

roxymuzak, Thursday, 15 January 2004 01:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Don't laugh, but I really thought Tasmin Archer was going to be huge for years after "Sleeping Satellite."

Joseph McCombs, Thursday, 15 January 2004 02:41 (twenty-two years ago)

The Digable Planets, who were cool like dat (and critics who want to pretend they actually had another HIT can blowout comb it out their ass).

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 15 January 2004 02:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, Tasmin Archer. That fits the definition...

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 15 January 2004 09:29 (twenty-two years ago)

How many artists WOULD have had a lengthy, fruitful career had they NOT scored an early huge hit?
knowhutimeanvern?
