Is Indie Contagious?

Help a young feller out-

I think I was a bit young and a bit in the wrong countries to get into indie, but now I've been listening to some stuff [I'm not even sure if indie is the right word- it's slow and has guitars] on Mr. Swygart's recommendation (Ballboy, Meanwhile Back in Communist Russia, Delgados, etc).

Here's the weird part - I have found that the amount of this strange stuff I listen to is directly proportional to how difficult it is to listen to the next pop track.

So, I conclude, this music is a disease. Not that the music is bad, but just that something about it attacks the part of your brain that likes pop. Prescription: This is me... then

If you see a lot of art films, you have a hard time tolerating Jim Belushi movies.

If you eat gourmet meals, casseroles lose their appeal (But diner food doesn't. hmm.)

The more you read, the less you like Jackie Collins.

.. So go figure...

You reckon? Cause I'm sure J-lo is good.

I just noticed the contrast between "heliotrope" by MBICR and "I'm real" (which is mediocre, but normally bearable) in my winamp playlist, which made me think about this.

Hmmm, I think I'm experiencing the opposite phenomena...

Interesting. Maybe pop and other crap need to be consumed in equal doses to avoid becoming some sort of abnormal fan, like a Dave Matthews supporter or one of those ACDC guys.

What is the Indie-Rawk equivalent of the Rock'n'roll fever and the boogie-woogie flu?
And can plenty of orange juice and bedrest prevent it from spreading?

Lord Custos Omicron (Lord Custos Omicron), Wednesday, 14 January 2004 22:15 (twenty-two years ago)

i don't have the Bedrest EP yet, is it any good?

(ho ho ho.)

Lord Custos Omicron (Lord Custos Omicron), Wednesday, 14 January 2004 22:23 (twenty-two years ago)

it's slow and has guitars

I'm sorry. There's no cure for this.

Right...

1) There are plenty, plenty better people to be getting advice off of than me.

2) Plenty.

3) It can work that way, but it does go the other way too - I've started listening to tons more pop than I used to since being on ILM regular-style, and now regularly question why I own all the Dismemberment Plan's albums, and whether CB Mamas by Jumbo was really worth £4, and whether I'm ever actually going to listen to that Foda 500 album, and precisely why I'd want to get a record by Mogwai in the first place...

4) ... but if you find that Ballboy are giving you this trouble, you want All The Records On The Radio Are Shite, cos that is amazing. For The Delgados it'd be All You Need Is Hate, or The Actress, or, well, anything really. for MBICR... hmm.

Basically, it will pass, and soon you too will be playing Girls Aloud and Maher Shalal Hash Baz together and going "Eh-yeee!" like the Fonz at how skillz it all is.

It's in the blood, it's called "indie rage". If a friend says to you they like Tortoise you have only 20 seconds to hack them to pieces with a machete.

Gear! (Gear!), Wednesday, 14 January 2004 22:32 (twenty-two years ago)

So, I conclude, this music is a disease.
Indie fertilizes Pop; Pop fertilizes Indie; Which gets in a three-way with Nu-Metal, Rap and Neo-Country.
Yeah, this kind of genre orgy is bound to spread diseases.
But there's no antibiotic that can stop genres swapping and blending.

i saw that movie for the first time last night, gear
how bizarre

(oh, and jole - apologies for not replying to the emails - they were appreciated, thanks, I just ain't much good at... replying to emails.)

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Wednesday, 14 January 2004 22:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Genre slash, what a brilliant idea.

Leee Majors (Leee), Wednesday, 14 January 2004 23:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Thanks for the support guys. But I think now I'm coming down with a case of the Neil youngs.

WBS: Hey, no probs man! I just thought anyone who writes articles as awesome as yours deserves some fan mail. One time that philosophy got me an email from Greg Saunier of Deerhoof, and another time I got one from Paul Lansky.
