gareth (gareth), Wednesday, 14 January 2004 15:06 (twenty-two years ago)

and, while we are at it, Dance Mania records, in general

gareth (gareth), Wednesday, 14 January 2004 15:06 (twenty-two years ago)

'Let Me Bang' o'course.

'Girls With All The Booty', is that him?

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Wednesday, 14 January 2004 15:19 (twenty-two years ago)

also "who you wit" was big when it came out.

i'd recommend any dance mania by paul johnson, lil louis, and the earlier dj funk stuff (after DM200+ Funk was basically recycling old stuff and doing mash-ups).

pete from the street, Wednesday, 14 January 2004 15:51 (twenty-two years ago)

here's my dance mania picks:

#1 of all time: "ghetto shoutout" by parris mitchell - you know, the one that's just the cut-up bassline to "billie jean" with 50 guys doing club shoutouts over it: "is the pocket in this motherfucker? HELL YEAH! is the shelter in this motherfucker? HELL YEAH! copperTONE in this motherfucker? HELL YEAH"

traxmen (robert armani) - wet floor
dj deeon - deeon doez disco
dj funk - freak like me
dj funk - work that body
dj deeon - yo mouf
wax master maurice - stop screaming
dj milton - 1999
dj nehpets - lay it down
dj deeon - freak like me
dj milton - bang it up
dj funk - dance mania mega mixes
jammin gerald - get the hoe 94

and one i don't know that goes: "get that ass OVER HERE!! get that ass OVER HERE!! get that ass OVER HERE!! getITgetITgetIT!!!" over and over again over a really hard break.

pete's right about "who u wit?" of course.

i wanted to make this a deeon vs armani taking sides, (why the hell was armani on acv anyway), but i might just revive that thread

gareth (gareth), Wednesday, 14 January 2004 17:22 (twenty-two years ago)

it's also amazing how many of the dancemania guys did amazing quality work on other labels ... i wanted to put steve poindexter and paul johnson on my list but their best best stuff is really elsewhere. there's an incredible depth to their discography that probably keeps them out of the spotlight (see also: djax-up-beats).

i imagine my list would be three times as long if i actually knew any of the tracks from the early period except "housenation"

vahid (vahid), Wednesday, 14 January 2004 17:26 (twenty-two years ago)

er, i mean i only know "house nation" ... that's an all-time killer track, too!! (though a little bit too played out in 2003)

vahid (vahid), Wednesday, 14 January 2004 17:27 (twenty-two years ago)

gareth how difficult is it to find these records in london? (that's where you're at, right?) in san diego it's damn near impossible, if only because when you do find them they tend to be sort of anonymously mixed into a stack of subliminal or a stack of stx or something.

vahid (vahid), Wednesday, 14 January 2004 17:41 (twenty-two years ago)

It was always impossible to get them in London, or anywhere else in the UK. I was super into this stuff in the mid 90s and the only time I bought any records was when I went to Gramaphone on a pilgrimage-type trip and also from Underground Solush'n in Edinburgh which whas run by a guy called George T who was a freak for all types of chicago house.

The other trouble was that Dance Mania seemed to have decided to keep up the Trax tradition of really fuckn shitty pressings.

I'd love to have a more complete collection. I have maybe 9-10 12"s. And this is given that any time I entered a UK record shop over a period of about 4 years I looked for ANYTHING on Dance Mania...

charltonlido (gareth), Friday, 24 June 2005 07:49 (twenty years ago)

I just met a guy who moved out here (to san diego) from chicago and has almost all of the dancemania records. One of these days I'm'a slip some tranquilizers into his drinks and go to his house and steal em all.

tylero (tylero), Friday, 24 June 2005 08:24 (twenty years ago)

tylero, is there any chance you could re-upload those mixes from earlier this year?, i never got a chance to get them

charltonlido (gareth), Friday, 24 June 2005 09:51 (twenty years ago)

Weirdly enough I have discovered that Tokyo is a total goldmine for this stuff. I got about 8 robert armani Dance Mania 12s, loads of DJ Funk and Eric Martin stuff and loads of others I can't remember right now cos my brain is a bit fried from too much work.

Anyway those DJ Funk records when he does tracks with names like Exxxstasy which are like US rave techno through a ghetto house lens are AMAZING.

Jacob (Jacob), Friday, 24 June 2005 11:34 (twenty years ago)

BTW does anyone know what that DM track that is themed around an INSANELY huge kickdrum? It starts off with a regular dance mania kick sound does one of those clattery breakdowns and then this kick that's louder than anything you've ever heard comes in. I foolishly didn't buy it way back in 97 and still regret it.

Closest thing to it I know is Romanthony's "South beach banger" but that still pales in comparison.

Jacob (Jacob), Friday, 24 June 2005 11:41 (twenty years ago)

dj funk and the advent are playing in leeds v soon. my friend said dj funk was like ghetto tech but am i to belive that its more like house? in which case, i will definately go

ambrose (ambrose), Friday, 24 June 2005 12:36 (twenty years ago)

charltonlido (gareth), Friday, 24 June 2005 12:54 (twenty years ago)

ambrose (ambrose), Friday, 24 June 2005 16:11 (twenty years ago)

i bought a whack of dance mania shit once from some guy on a farm in rural ontario after i heard he was selling some dj gear. the dude was this total white hick, maybe 40 years old, and i was thinking to myself "why the fuck does this dude have all these records?!?!" along with tons of ghetto shit he had all these old school detroit techno records (metroplex, directbeat, r&s)... anyhow, my friend and i got to talking to him and he said he used to dj some clubs in the city (city being the bustling metropolis of windsor, ontario) and then he was like "yeah, you guys like that song that goes 'all the n--gers in this house!'? that's a great song!" (making sure to pronounce the ending with an "ers" sound rather than an "az" sound.

not that either would've made any difference really, but we both sorta slowly backed away from him. frightening what can happen when hicks latch onto ghetto tech.

ken taylrr (ken taylrr), Friday, 24 June 2005 16:28 (twenty years ago)

Don't spend a lot of money trying to go see DJ Funk. He's a notorious no-show, or worse, show-up-drunk-puke-on-the-tables-after-two-songs DJ.
He's really not that great at mixing either. The advent is badass, though, and I'd go for that alone, and just hope DJ Funk does something worthwhile as a bonus.
