What is the longest rock song ever recorded? and who recorded it?

Michele Rumfield, Wednesday, 14 January 2004 17:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Green Carnation came pretty fucking close, I'm sure. Too bad the song isn't all that hot.

James Slone (Freon Trotsky), Wednesday, 14 January 2004 17:30 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm sure there's longer, and I think there was a thread on this, but Edge of Sanity's 'Crimson' is 40 minutes of death metal asskickery.

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 14 January 2004 17:30 (twenty-two years ago)

That Green Carnation song is an hour long incidentally.

Oh yeah, and Devil Doll's "Sacrilege of Fatal Arms", which is mighty long, might count up there too.

The title track to Sleep's "Dopesmoker" clocks in at 63:31.

Jay Kid (Jay K), Wednesday, 14 January 2004 18:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Iron Butterfly is STILL recording the jam part of their fully unedited version of "Inna Gadda De Vida"... you know, that part..

"Delirium Cordia" by Fantomas is 74 minutes long.

otto, Wednesday, 14 January 2004 19:27 (twenty-two years ago)

I was gonna suggest that, but I don't think Fantomas is a rock band in anything other than instrumentation.

As Simon sez, that's Corrupted's Llendose de Gusanos, a 100-minute glacier of total doom in the extended play vein of Khanate. The bandleader is early Boredoms/Hanatarashi drummer Chu, and this song was written I think for the death of S.O.B. singer Tottsuan almost ten years ago. The 20-minute Satie-like piano intro might knock a few rock minutes off the total tally.

Sleep's Jerusalem earns an honorable mention at 53 minutes. Oh wait, there's a list of these in Sound of the Beast...

Venom - At War With Satan lasted 23 minutes, but that was the back in the neo-punk era of epic metal.

Chris Butler's "The Devil Glitch" - 69 minutes - no breaks, no repeated lyrics - done in 1 live take.

"Butler ended up with the world's longest pop song, as certified by the 1998 edition of the Guinness Book of World Records. However, most observers neglect to mention one salient fact about this song: it's really good" - AMG

These probably don't count, but I'm pretty sure both Mark Mallman doing a 26-hour song called "Marathon" in a Minneapolis club, and a bunch of Duluth musicians doing a 30-hour drone fest after 9/11 called "Elegy," were recorded on film or video.

LaMonte Young's "Dorian Blues in G", recorded live at the Kitchen in 1993, runs two hours and change. (But no CHORD change!) Band consisted of keys/drums/elec gtr & bs, so I consider it rock in all but name (as opposed to minimalism or blues or "new music" or whatever.

I have been doing a spoken word piece for about 23 years, if that helps you at all.
