What music are you determined to get into or understand in 2004?

This takes of from jel's question about '03. Regardless of new releases planned for '04, do you have any education planned for yourself in 2004? Are you going to purchase the entire Ethiopiques series and assimilate it? Finally get what was so great about the Fugs? Listen to all of your XPressway and related records again?

This is my favorite thing about the end of the year: the planning of new listening projects.

I really want to spend more time listening to Hawaiian music, and possibly even learning to play ukelele (hey, they teach 8 yr-olds, how hard can it be?).

Yeah! I've decided I really like the sound of slack-key guitar and I wanna hear more of it.

Ouch, I meant to say "This takes off . . ." at the beginning of the thread.

All I have (aside from the SpongeBob Squarepants first season DVD box, I think the end credits music is what really sold me on the idea that I need more HW music) is the Tau Moe Family album Rounder put out in the late 80s. Any suggestions?

I'm planning on buying more Greek music than I have heretofore, now that I have pulled together a list of names and found a distributor.

Also planning on digging more into Arab instrumental music, and slightly less known figures than the ones I normally listen to.

Want to check out Afro-Colombian music, especially the coastal stuff I have been hearing about.

I want to buy a few of the more promising nu-soul type things that I have caught my eye, also.

Pick up some more of the instrumental stuff people suggested on my instrumental music thread.

No real massive plans.

Luigi, I'm no expert and don't have much of it, but this is quite nice.

Sonny A. (Keiko), Wednesday, 14 January 2004 22:49 (twenty-two years ago)

i found that with downloading i got the worst of both worlds, inasmuch as i lost the urge to buy the CDs and never listened to what i downloaded either.

the surface noise (electricsound), Wednesday, 14 January 2004 22:53 (twenty-two years ago)

haha! i know that feeling.

mullygrubber (gaz), Wednesday, 14 January 2004 22:55 (twenty-two years ago)

I want to get into old Vocal Pop (just ordered a few "Sentimental Journey" comps off amazon.) I also plan to discover more about what European popular music was like before Rock & Roll - music hall, chansons, Comedian Harmonists, etc. Wanna find out if there's some links between that and "classical" music; wanna know how much diferent European countries influenced each other; and am very interested indeed in whether there's any links between that stuff and literature of that time. Wanna learn something about the evolution of French music in particular - it's like there's this half dozen or so "cool" names that keep getting thrown around (Francoise Hardy, Serge Gainsbourg, Charles Aznavour, Jacques Brell - yes I know he's belgian), but no one ever seems to talk about real movements and also-rans and such.

Also hoping that my continued interest in Portuguese Hip-Hop will point me to some current Afropop (since there's so many immigrants involved in the style and they talk a lot in interviews about that stuff influencing them)

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Wednesday, 14 January 2004 23:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Luigi, this is pretty good, too. "Mauna Kea" is one of my favorite pieces for guitar in any genre.

oops (Oops), Wednesday, 14 January 2004 23:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Anything released in the last ten years. I am desperately trying to disprove my own theory that Rock and Roll is dead, because if I believe the patient to be deceased, it just means I've turned into an old fart.

REB
