Beginner's guide to GRIME

I recently bought Dizee's album and am loving it. I want to get a couple more Grime CDs, but I have no idea what I am doing.

What I like about Boy in da Corner:

the skittery beats
the strange sounds that drop in and out (I really like this)
the jerkiness
the ruggedness
the Britishness
the darkness

Know what I mean?

So, who are the giants of grime? What are the best albums?

Please nothing too obscure. Nothing UK only.

Thanks.

haha "nothing uk only"?!?!?!

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 15 January 2004 01:40 (twenty-two years ago)

p.s. boy in da corner is the first (true) grime album (a case might be made for more fire, i guess). wiley and tinchy strider both (purportedly) have albums in the pipeline. most grime is only available on 12" single and dubplate. or mp3.

ha how young does tinchy strider sound?! has his voice even broken?

Uzbeki grime is the shit.

Stop underestimating Uzbeki Grime Mr. Raggett.

Debito, nothing is UK only when you have SoulSeek (the only P2P that you have a chance of finding most Grime.

First search ILM for Wiley and you should find a question in which I asked ILM what are the best Wiley productions - go from there.

Anybody feel like giving Debito a run down on how grime works(Riddims, Pirate Radio broadcasts etc)- I have to go to work.

Thanks for the feedback.

Of course I realize that grime is a UK only thing. I meant stuff that is available outside of the UK, but you already knew that, smart-asses.

Why has only Dizee mangaed to cross over? Are there other proper albums in the pipeline?

Yeah, I saw that one coming. I even wrote a disclaimer, but I decided to delete it. I thought ILMers were mature enough to let it slide...

Debito (Debito), Thursday, 15 January 2004 03:55 (twenty-two years ago)

You should know better than that.

(I was trying to explain to an American a few weeks back that in the late 90s "dark" meant "good" in the UK. He thought I was taking the piss)

Wiley?

Compilations:

N.A.S.T.Y. Crew mix by Jammer

Crews Control

Jess mentioned a Donae'o album also?

Tinch may or may not release an album.

Thanks a lot for the links. This is a pretty intimidating genre to crack.

Wiley keeps coming up.

FACT:My 18 yr old cousin is working on his debut grime release. I'd say he's a bit long in the tooth for it now,

the wiley album exists and is coming out on xl in march. i *think* the tinchy strider album exists, but afaik he doesn't have a record deal.

toby (tsg20), Thursday, 15 January 2004 08:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Actually, I was going to start a separate thread the other day asking if there are any commercially available grime compilations that make a decent enough introduction. My internet access is so k-lame at the moment that MP3s are pretty much a no-go area.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 15 January 2004 10:26 (twenty-two years ago)

i can sort you out, matt. the only comp that's commercially available in the sense of being on sale in hmv etc is the street beats one, i think, which isn't particularly good imho.
