No matter how hard I scrub, the dirt won't come off !!!(emo)

Does anybody here loathe emo as much as I do? The snotty "artistic" pretensions, the popularity with hipsters, the whole Fugazi-heirarchy thing, the annoyingly overlong song titles, the horrible rasped gutteral screeching, the pseudo-romantic nonsense about relationships, the *importance*? I'm getting more and more paranoid that I am becoming emo. An extensive search of my cd collection has turned up a total of two Hum cds, which I'm not quite positive are emo but I think you could see them as it.
What kind of music do you recommend for recovering emoholics? And do you know of any scenes today that are raw, underground and intelligent but aren't influenced by this cacophonous genre? My masculinity is at stake here, people!

Well, lone nut, I'd recommend Motorhead for starters.

Go eat a cheeseburger. It's difficult to be mistaken as emo when you're eating a cheeseburger.

Emo and hipster don't go together. Maybe a few years ago?

Hang out with three or more males of color (at ONCE!).

Le Coq (DarrenK), Thursday, 15 January 2004 04:07 (twenty-two years ago)

If I could define emo, I might be able to hate it. As it is, I love some forms of 'emo' and loath others.

E.g. The Get Up Kids = blow, The Appleseed Cast = own.

Stupid (Stupid), Thursday, 15 January 2004 04:11 (twenty-two years ago)

I didn't think the term 'emo' had anything had anything to do with music anymore. I thought it was more about skinny fags in tight t-shirts, really perfectly messed up hair, bad posture, and a complete naivity when it comes to normal real-life stuff like sex and drugs.

Johnny Badlees (crispssssss), Thursday, 15 January 2004 04:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Marc Almond was emo?

the music mole (colin s barrow), Thursday, 15 January 2004 04:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh heavens no. He was talented.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 15 January 2004 04:19 (twenty-two years ago)

He's still talented, in his way.

the baby from three men and a baby, but all growed up (nordicskilla), Thursday, 15 January 2004 04:21 (twenty-two years ago)

He's extremely still talented. It's just that said phase of his life was twenty years ago.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 15 January 2004 04:22 (twenty-two years ago)

extremely still, talented - Marc Almond

THE FALL

autovac (autovac), Thursday, 15 January 2004 09:04 (twenty-two years ago)

PRINCE. And THE FALL. And FUGAZI, it's not like they started Emo on purpose (I hope), and really garbled yelling about politics isn't very Emo.

Silly Sailor (Andrew Thames), Thursday, 15 January 2004 09:11 (twenty-two years ago)

someone should visit the d33p 3lm forums for unhealthy doses of emo-ness.

Grell (Grell), Thursday, 15 January 2004 09:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Prince? What? Can someone explain the Prince connection to emo? He was an emotional fella for sure, but...whaa?

TomB (TomB), Thursday, 15 January 2004 13:20 (twenty-two years ago)

prince is recommended as a cure to emo, as per the original question.

i'm still not sure if i'd recognize emo when i heard it--unless it actually does sound like sunny day real estate but not quite as good, which is how it's usually explained to me.

andrew s, Thursday, 15 January 2004 21:35 (twenty-two years ago)

haha "he was talented"
