"This is the thread where you get excited about tracks you heard because of the Rough Guide thread"

(cos otherwise that thread really IS just showing off!)

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Thursday, 15 January 2004 09:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Wha? Mine were obvious pop hitz, dogg! I *could* have shown off, of course...

Enrique (Enrique), Thursday, 15 January 2004 10:14 (twenty-two years ago)

No I mean if people aren't actually listening to some new things because of it then what's it for? I love it and all but let's hear some RESULTS!

(Actually most of the best things I've heard have been through researching for my ones.)

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Thursday, 15 January 2004 10:23 (twenty-two years ago)

i'd like to think of it as a reference library for continuing future use.

mullygrubber (gaz), Thursday, 15 January 2004 10:36 (twenty-two years ago)

I. Wish. I. Still. Had. The. Internet.

Michael B, Thursday, 15 January 2004 10:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Howzabout waiting till it dies down and publishing it on cafepress...

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 15 January 2004 10:48 (twenty-two years ago)

What Michael said.

I've banned myself from looking at that thread. It's too enraging/frustrating.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 15 January 2004 10:48 (twenty-two years ago)

in what way?

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 15 January 2004 10:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Crap interweb access = no downloading :(

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 15 January 2004 11:09 (twenty-two years ago)

i too miss the days of office access to AudioGalaxy. Now if only I asked for a mac at home and the cheap HC broadband offer...

Jaunty Alan (Alan), Thursday, 15 January 2004 11:16 (twenty-two years ago)

well i'm slowly working my way through the tunes. started with the gabba list.. though i'd argue that a few on that list were more the "hard end of happy hardcore" than actual gabba. i'm gonna get everything on the Can list today.

searchanddelete, Thursday, 15 January 2004 11:18 (twenty-two years ago)

It might be handy if people fessed up to what they actually own when posting an RG comp - then we can get some sort of swapsies thing going, thus avoiding the above-mentioned "I have a shit connection"/"I can't find these tracks online" fiasco.

I, for example, have *cough* every song on the *cough* Chris de *cough* Burgh comp...and perhaps more importantly, all the Pulp ones I posted, ditto Stereolab (although some of it's on vinyl which might prove tricksy).

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Thursday, 15 January 2004 11:50 (twenty-two years ago)

i still don't have all the techstep ones :(

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 15 January 2004 12:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Mr carmosy reminded me of the joys of Happening All Over Again. It is 'licious.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Thursday, 15 January 2004 12:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Carmody, obv.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Thursday, 15 January 2004 12:33 (twenty-two years ago)

its not so much showing off as the fact that january is a quiet month for releases.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Thursday, 15 January 2004 12:38 (twenty-two years ago)

I like it when people help fill out the lists or make suggestions. F'rinstance, hearty thanks to Dan Seltzer for his vocoder suggestions. That comp, currently in the works, is much better for them.

s woods, Thursday, 15 January 2004 14:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Oops, it's Selzer - sorry.

s woods, Thursday, 15 January 2004 14:17 (twenty-two years ago)

People who compile them on Slsk should list their screen names and which ones they have.

Colin Beckett (Colin Beckett), Thursday, 15 January 2004 16:06 (twenty-two years ago)

is it too early to start revising our rough guides?

vahid (vahid), Thursday, 15 January 2004 16:13 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah i hope if i browse some of the obvious suspects on slsk i'm going to find some rough guides...

toby (tsg20), Thursday, 15 January 2004 16:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Ummmm you might find all the actual tracks toby.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Thursday, 15 January 2004 16:16 (twenty-two years ago)

i should def have the French House one EQ'd and ready for plundering by Sunday (Techstep one within the week), you will find the tracks on slsk in the meantime anyway but beware of crap and inconsistent quality

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 15 January 2004 19:01 (twenty-two years ago)

I have all the northern soul ones on mine, and most if not all on Dr C's.

chris (chris), Thursday, 15 January 2004 20:34 (twenty-two years ago)

scott, which of my suggestions did you add? did you find them all? I could get you copies if need be...

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Thursday, 15 January 2004 21:01 (twenty-two years ago)

The only one I haven't found yet (on either soulseek or kazaa lite) is YMO's "Behind the Max." The Man Parrish and Mr. Flagio are great finds. I had Wendy Carlos on my original list (which dates back a couple yrs), but was under the impression that the vocoder bit in there was a relatively small segment in a really long song...but I found that album on soulseek too and will still go through it. Also, your overall point about not enough electro was obviously dead-on, though I'm still probably a little lax in that region (then again, single discs only!).

A couple more goodies I did add: "California Love" by 2-pac and "Freak-a-Zoid" (really KEY in all this, far as I'm concerned) by Midnight Star. My favourite vocoder moment EVER is the first 10 seconds of Snoop's "What's My Name" but I'm really trying to keep it to stuff where the effect is fairly prominent throughout (hence why I intend to scratch the New Order remix--and maybe the Frampton track).

I'll take one more attempt later tonight at the YMO track...

s woods, Thursday, 15 January 2004 21:19 (twenty-two years ago)

I almost have all of Jess's Dirty South compiled and I'll rip and organize all mine by this weeekend. Slsk name: Colinpb

Colin Beckett (Colin Beckett), Thursday, 15 January 2004 21:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, I was going to say something about "California Love" earlier but I forgot. Good job :)

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 15 January 2004 21:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Not sure if this is the place to ask this: would it make sense to start a 'Rough Guide Collaboration' thread? I've started jotting down some good ones, but I can only get halfway through them. Not sure I want to post them in the regular list page or not--it'll just end up adding clutter, no? Anyway, if the collaborations can somehow be agreed upon between the collaborators (er, I can see problems already!), then the 'final' lists could be moved over to the actual Rough Guide page.

Maybe this suggestion is just clutter?

s woods, Thursday, 15 January 2004 21:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Would anyone who has it rip "Bounce for the Juvenile"? I can't find it anywhere.

Colin Beckett (Colin Beckett), Thursday, 15 January 2004 21:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Wait wait wait...Scott, do you have Jerry Yester & Judy Henske's " Farewell Aldebaran"?

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Thursday, 15 January 2004 22:12 (twenty-two years ago)

colin i'll see if i have the mix cd it's on with me.

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 15 January 2004 22:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Thanks

Colin Beckett (Colin Beckett), Thursday, 15 January 2004 22:14 (twenty-two years ago)

"Farewell" is a very early pop usage of vocoders...from '69!

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Thursday, 15 January 2004 22:15 (twenty-two years ago)

scott, in the initial thread, knowing it was gonna be one disk and seeing you wanted it to be more inclusive, I didn't bother listing any, but will now for curiousity's sake. It's also confusing, I mean Jam On It By Newcleus, that's more of pitch shift effect or whatever. Anyway, here's some electro, I'm at work now so I can't remember exactly how much vocoder may be in these tracks, many of these just have prominent vocoder choruses, but if yr on soulseek or whatever, check these out:

Jonzun Crew-Pack Jam
Mantronix-Needle to the Groove
Egyptian Lover-Egypt, Egypt

I should wait till I get home.

wait, I just remembered, like 5 years ago I made a top ten list for the Belle and Sebastian website called "Songs sung by or about Robots" but I can't find it now. Anyone know if they still have those lists up?

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Thursday, 15 January 2004 22:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Ah - I've got more work to do on this...will try and figure all this out later. Really hope I can find that Jerry Yester track too (the only pre-Kraftwerk one I have is the Max Matthews, which is great but about 40 seconds long). Another essential: Telex "Rock Around the Clock." And you're right about the "confusion," Dan: really, it's more about "robotic vocal devices" than (strictly speaking) vocoders.

s woods, Friday, 16 January 2004 00:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Scott -- "Farewell" is on SoulS**k right now.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Friday, 16 January 2004 00:28 (twenty-two years ago)

I just finished getting a copy - don't know if it was you, but thanks. I can't *believe* how weird that song is.

s woods, Friday, 16 January 2004 00:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Yet it's "pure pop" enough for Geir. Maybe.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Friday, 16 January 2004 00:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Any love (or even like) for Joe Walsh's "Rocky Mountain Way," Scott, an early talk-box song that was very popular?

nickn (nickn), Friday, 16 January 2004 02:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Damn damn damn - great suggestion, and I just finished compiling. One for the follow-up.

s woods, Friday, 16 January 2004 05:58 (twenty-two years ago)

has anybody seen Big Hard Excellent Fish's "Imperfect List" on slsk?

etc, Tuesday, 20 January 2004 16:42 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm dl'ing it right now - the second and third versions anyway, I have the main version already and I'm sharing it, whats your username?

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 17:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Just wanna thank dleone for the KRautrock RG on the original thread. My first download of all these--hooray!--and I'm enjoying it thoroughly, esp. (so far) Amon Duul, Klaus Schultze, and Harmonia (none of which I'm familiar with--in fact, I haven't heard a single track from this list). I've had a hard time locating one track ("eruption 2")--I'm on queue for it now in slsk--and even without this it's too long for a CD (I'll probably have to chop the Tangerine Dream track which runs 20 minutes)--but apart from that, awesome collection.

Next on the to-get file: either Timbaland or Carter USM.

s woods, Thursday, 22 January 2004 02:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Search & Delete--very curious what you think of the Can stuff...

Douglas (Douglas), Thursday, 22 January 2004 02:47 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm going to put in a shout-out for the 80s Europop one - I've got all but one track now and it's all terrifically enjoyable!

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Thursday, 22 January 2004 09:52 (twenty-two years ago)

six years pass...

I hate to shill for emusic but they have about twenty of these now, a wee fraction of the entire catalog, but MUCH cheaper than the compact discs. I hope that emusic offers more of these in the future. However you get extra tracks for 12 credits! Arabic lounge is pretty cool.

like you really know who trisomie 21 is (u s steel), Saturday, 6 November 2010 22:18 (fifteen years ago)
