The guitarist of Wiltshire pop band Hope of the States has been found hanged at a recording studio.
Police were called to the Real World Studios - owned by singer Peter Gabriel - at Box, near Bath, at 0430 GMT on Thursday after the body of James Lawrance, 26, was discovered.

The six-piece band had been recording their debut album.

Wiltshire Police say the death is not being treated as suspicious.

Hope of the States had a top 40 single with Enemies Friends and had appeared on the BBC's Top of the Pops programme.

I mean... they were really on the verge of being huge this year. This is properly out of the blue. Crikey.

Maybe he'd read this week's NME special about all great rock 'n' roll deaths happening at the age of 27 and wanted to buck the trend?

Seriously, though, that song his band did was pretty good.

RIP, etc.

HotS had real potential.

I'm sure this is tragic but... who?

Hope Of The States. From Chichester, hyped majorly by NME and Teletext and several others. Supposedly sound like a poppier Sigur Ros, though from what I heard Spiritualised seem as good a reference point as any. Scored one of the surprise hits of last year when their second single, Enemies/Friends, entered the top 40 at #26. Generally seen as being set for very big things... though who's to say why he did it? The music might not have had anything to do with it.

Yeah, RIP. Saw them at Reading last year and they were excellent. Condolences to his family and friends.
