Bands from, songs about, which/whatever.

(Inspired by attempt at Rough Guide To Croydon on the original Rough Guide thread near the bottom, particularly regrettable inclusion of Dane Bowers)

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Thursday, 15 January 2004 14:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Captain Sensible to thread!

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Thursday, 15 January 2004 14:21 (twenty-two years ago)

i THINK Genaside II and Archive are from Croydon, SEARCH (although Archive sound naffer the further away i get from my student days)

grand drive. alt. country, often slagged for not being alt. enough. but their 2000 album 'true love and high adventure' was one of my faves of that year.

it was odd, seeing them live and finding out they were from croydon. they sound like they should be from somewhere with far more cacti.

hobart paving (hobart paving), Thursday, 15 January 2004 14:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Kirsty MacColl was from Croydon too apparently.

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Thursday, 15 January 2004 14:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Grand Drive? Knew they were from South London, but not Croydon specifically... I remember liking a couple of their things.

Already got McColl, Sensible & The Damned...

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Thursday, 15 January 2004 14:33 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm sure I heard that Malcolm McClaren was an art student in Croydon...

M Carty (mj_c), Thursday, 15 January 2004 14:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Derren Brown. Assuming he puts out a single at some point.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 15 January 2004 14:40 (twenty-two years ago)

"Already got McColl, Sensible & The Damned..."

I've seen that now - was puzzled by your choice of Damned and Sensible songs 'though!

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Thursday, 15 January 2004 14:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Both Wizz Jones and Ralph McTell are from Croydon. 'So let me take you by the hand...'

Also Francis Rossi of the Quo and Peter Barstard Starstedtdt.

NickB (NickB), Thursday, 15 January 2004 14:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Isn't dane bowers from croydon too? (I once saw him described as 'russell crowe of croydon' for tawdry womanising reasons)

... and come to think of it, how about Kate Moss? You could thereby include her godawful duet with Bobby Gillespie.

M Carty (mj_c), Thursday, 15 January 2004 14:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Thomas Dolby's "Screen Kiss" has the line "...a Croydon girl could
really hope to find a home/But with a thousand miles of real estate to choose from/You begin to see the value of your freedom..."

Chris Hill (Chris Hill), Thursday, 15 January 2004 15:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Classic for both the Field Mice and Crystal Palace F.C. (By far the greatest team, the world has ever seen)

flowersdie (flowersdie), Thursday, 15 January 2004 16:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Palace have been in steady decline ever since losing the FA Cup Final in (I think) 1990... I remember the leaflet we got through the post about booking a seat in the new Holmesdale Road End. Featuring football superstars such as: RAY WILKINS! ATTILIO LOMBARDO! SOMEONE ELSE! Umm...

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Thursday, 15 January 2004 16:07 (twenty-two years ago)

(quite possibly Tomas Brolin)

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Thursday, 15 January 2004 16:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Ray Wilkins and Lombardo were from both completely different eras so I'd be surprised, although both seasons they played ended in undeserved and unlucky relegations. Infact "the crab" only actually played once for us, he lasted 61 minutes, where he broke his foot during a 6-1 home defeat by Liverpool. I'm quite embarressed about knowing these facts without referring to a book, you know.

flowersdie (flowersdie), Thursday, 15 January 2004 16:25 (twenty-two years ago)

SAINT ETIENNE! There should be a blue plaque on East Croydon station for them alone. 'Fake 88' - as narrated by Stephen Duffy - describes driving down George Street and a conversation about what the 80s would be remembered for...

"Mark King slapped his bass/Early issues of The Face"

laticsmon (laticsmon), Thursday, 15 January 2004 16:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Having had the misfortune to have been born in Croydon, it's stretching it a little to say Crystal Palace is in Croydon. It's in Crystal Palace. I've got a feeling The Field Mice, or Bob Wratten in particular, is from Morden.
Again, I don't think Grand Drive are from Croydon, but somewhere in South London (note: Croydon is not in London, it's in Surrey).
Kate Moss is from Croydon.

Canada Briggs (Canada Briggs), Thursday, 15 January 2004 17:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Well people from Croydon generally consider Palace their local team.
Actually, I think the Field Mice may have been from Mitcham.

Janesuck (flowersdie), Thursday, 15 January 2004 17:45 (twenty-two years ago)

That's cos Crystal Palace Football Club ain't actually in Crystal Palace. Crystal Palace itself is in Bromley.

I forgot Omar. Bugger.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Friday, 16 January 2004 02:25 (twenty-two years ago)

field mice are from croydon, i have an interview with them before their debut gig at the apple orchard. 'one review in particular really annoyed , they didn't really criticise the music more the words we used'

keith m (keithmcl), Friday, 16 January 2004 02:41 (twenty-two years ago)

um, Crystal Palace isn't in Bromley; You may be getting confused with 'London Boroughs of...'. Which in itself is confusing, as Bromley's in Kent. If you want to say Crystal Palace, or at least Selhurst Park, is somewhere other than Crystal Palace, your safest bet would be to say South Norwood.
Yes, Janesuck, Mitcham sounds about right. For ease of reference, inhabitants of areas such as Mitcham may say they're from Croydon. After all, Croydon is marginally better than Mitcham.

Canada Briggs (Canada Briggs), Friday, 16 January 2004 12:40 (twenty-two years ago)

The Field Mice are from Mitcham, I think, but Croydon looms large in their history.

The relative merits of Croydon and Mitcham are debatable.

Canada, I'm surprised you're not talking about Comet Gain yet.

Tim (Tim), Friday, 16 January 2004 12:47 (twenty-two years ago)

croydon. . .its all about dubstep

puregrime, Friday, 16 January 2004 12:49 (twenty-two years ago)

are Kitachi from Croydon?

stevem (blueski), Friday, 16 January 2004 12:56 (twenty-two years ago)

I thought Comet Gain were from Balham.

Don't go to pubs (flowersdie), Friday, 16 January 2004 13:08 (twenty-two years ago)

big apple in croydon is the centre of some people“s world!

palace play between selhurst and thornton heath. Obviously tho, they are the team for bromley, croyden, etc etc etc pretty much the whole of south london, some of kent, unless you go too far east.....good to see some eagles fans represent on ILX tho.

x-post
Comet Gain?! I don't like to think about them, let alone talk about them, but here goes. Yes, David did live in Croydon a few years ago. Woody did until last month. And that's that. Balham? Sarah lived in Balham for a short time until 8 years ago. Then there was the whole CG/Velocette split. Which is boring.
I was once the mascot at a Palace game. 1985. I have tried to wipe it from my memory, but I can't.

Canada Briggs (Canada Briggs), Friday, 16 January 2004 14:35 (twenty-two years ago)

I was wondering if anyone else had noticed the spooky resemblance between him out of Comet Gain and Fulham glovesman Edwin van der Saar, but I guess you're not the fellow to ask, Ms. Briggs.

Tim (Tim), Friday, 16 January 2004 14:40 (twenty-two years ago)

I was bowling with him out of Comet Gain last night. If the phrases "not a natural athelete", "yes, my washing machine is still broken" and "I drink while I play" are applicable to this van der Saar character, there may well be a resemblance.

Canada Briggs (Canada Briggs), Friday, 16 January 2004 14:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Wasn't the orginal comet gain drummer from banbury, near oxford? I think he was called Phil. He adored the June Brides and was at every single london gig I went to between 1992-1996.

flowersdie (flowersdie), Friday, 16 January 2004 14:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Phil is from Banbury originally. CG were formed in Oxford and of the original members all were then living in Oxford (David was working in the record shop, Sarah was studying at the polyversity and Jax was, oh I dunno) apart from Sam, who was in London. The band eventually gravitated to London. The various line-ups over the years haven't given a strong geographical identity to the band, but they've long been based in London. Only original member left David is from London (Somers Town, he once told me) originally.
Phil is now the drummer/main songwriter in Kicker.

Canada Briggs (Canada Briggs), Friday, 16 January 2004 15:10 (twenty-two years ago)

I hope no-one who actually likes thinking about Comet Gain ever decides to give us a detailed run-down.

Tim (Tim), Friday, 16 January 2004 15:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Hopkins! If you're going to How Does It Feel To Be Drunk tonight, we can have a full and frank exchange about this. Oh, fair point, I suppose. But, in my defence, the question was asked, and I dutifully responded.

Canada Briggs (Canada Briggs), Friday, 16 January 2004 15:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Might well see you later, but on this decidedly SOTR thread I think it's fair to express my horror re: the possiblility of trekking that far into Nosebleed Territory.

Tim (Tim), Friday, 16 January 2004 15:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Canada, after you have finished listening to that Go kart Mozart album, can you tell what Palace match were you mascot for in 85?

New Potato (flowersdie), Friday, 16 January 2004 18:02 (twenty-two years ago)

I am desperately afeard, New Potato, that you have a collection of Palace programmes and will endeavour to find a photograph of my cherubic young self. I must demur, in this instance, to protect the innocent (well, I was innocent then).

For a little more flavour, however, I can say that my under-12s Sunday league side were in a south London final, and it was held at Selhurst Park after the Palace game. There was a raffle to see who would be the mascot. I won, but I strongly suspect it was rigged as it was my last game due to leaving the area. I got a free kit, and to kick about with the team before kick off. One of them said 'you're a bit bigger than normal'. Which was true, as they normally have kids about 7 as the mascot.

Stevie Coppell used to do the awards ceremony each year at the Sunday league club. The bloke that ran it was a massive Palace fan, which clearly held some sway. Sadly, he insisted on living his life through his two children and played them both at the Selhurst game. One was too young, one too old, and both were complete donkeys. Of course, we lost.

Canada Briggs (Canada Briggs), Friday, 16 January 2004 18:36 (twenty-two years ago)

UKG producers Plasticman, Hatcha and DnD are all from Croydon.

(I'm pretty sure Genaside II are from Brixton).

blimman, Friday, 16 January 2004 20:28 (twenty-two years ago)

'you're from croydon which is a big city. so how come you're called the field mice?', 'it's just a name really, we had no idea when we joined sarah that there were other bands like the sea urchins and the poppyheads'

keith m (keithmcl), Saturday, 17 January 2004 01:16 (twenty-two years ago)

croydon easter - there, i said it! (and now i must listen to it.)

youn, Saturday, 17 January 2004 04:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Croydon isn't a city, big or small. It applies whenever the chance arises to gain city status, but it never gets it.
