Spiritualized Live

I'm going to see them and think I'll get more out of it if I'm a bit more familiar with their music. All I've heard is "Ladies and Gentlemen......." which I didn't much care for (I'm hoping they'll be better live). I'll buy or download another couple of albums and listen over the weekend - but which ones, with specific reference to what they are likely to play live?

ArfArf, Thursday, 15 January 2004 16:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Don't. Just go. If you play another couple of albums and you didn't care much for LAGWAFIS, then you won't go at all...

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 15 January 2004 16:28 (twenty-two years ago)

They're better live than on disc anyway.

dave225 (Dave225), Thursday, 15 January 2004 16:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Get the Live at the Royal Albert Hall if you want an idea of what they sound like live (Although I've a feeling they're just going out as a stripped back band this time).

Fair comment by Mark Grout though

"If you play another couple of albums and you didn't care much for LAGWAFIS, then you won't go at all... "

This is the response I feared. I was hoping they might have stuff that non-fans might like better than LAGWAFIS (which I listened to extensively when it came out, and a couple of times more recently - it wasn't just a casual listen, I really did give it a fair chance.)

ArfArf, Thursday, 15 January 2004 16:45 (twenty-two years ago)

i think if you dont like LAGWAFIS you just won't like Spritualized - i love them but they dont deviate much from their "sound".

jed_ (jed), Thursday, 15 January 2004 16:46 (twenty-two years ago)

My missus loves LAGWAFIS. This is the payback for taking her to see John Zorn.

ArfArf, Thursday, 15 January 2004 16:50 (twenty-two years ago)

I found LAGWAFIS to be much more boring than the live show though. It took me a long time to get into the record. But as far as "the sound" goes, yeah, it's representative .. just not as three-dimensional.

dave225 (Dave225), Thursday, 15 January 2004 17:01 (twenty-two years ago)

its actually one of my least favourite albums of thiers but i think alot of fans like it most right?

jed_ (jed), Thursday, 15 January 2004 17:06 (twenty-two years ago)

I just hope Jason is off the smack, man.

Mark (MarkR), Thursday, 15 January 2004 17:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Jesus, I was there and have never felt more pi$$ed off at the end of it than with any other gigs (Baxendale excepted, natch) THat was a terrible gig, really awful, no atmossphere whatsoever.

Fucked Up Inside eats Royal Albert Hall for breakfast.

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Thursday, 15 January 2004 17:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Get one of the first two, Lazer Guided Melodies or Pure Phase. (I'd say the former is probably the safest bet.) These are probably their most well liked albums and there's lots of beatiful stuff, particularly on the later half of LGM.

Don't expect them to be like RAH, in the fall they were touring with
(I think)just six in the band. Look out for "Run" (a highlight) and "Take your time" (One of my least favs from from LGM) as well as a couple others from that album. From Pure Phase they've been playing "Medication" and sometimes "Electric Mainline" & "All of my Tears".
At least six were from the new album, and from LAG they played "Cop Shoot Cop" and "Come Together".

ALso worth checking out is "Walking with Jesus" a classic they've been
playing from J's S3 days. You can see the video for that at Drug Music Webcast, but the slower album version of WWJ is a must here.

Colleen Conners (Colleen C), Thursday, 15 January 2004 18:40 (twenty-two years ago)

LAGWAFIS is the only good album they ever made. Let It Come Down is abysmal and Lazer Guided Melodies is poor. Pure Phase is unlistenable trash. I was bored when my brother played me the latest album. Heard it all before.

Anyone else think Amazing Grace might be their best? Also, I'd recomend it just to get an idea of how they're going to sound live.

danh, Thursday, 15 January 2004 19:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Let it come down is my favourite but i would listen to "complete works vol.1" now over any of their proper albums. ArfArf if you are near a Fopp outlet that double cd is currently on sale for a fiver!

jed_ (jed), Thursday, 15 January 2004 19:19 (twenty-two years ago)

OK, Fopp it is.

The Royal Alb Hall gig was one of the greatest live things I've ever attended (I am a total suckah for epilepsy-inducing lightshows, tho', esp. after a disco biscuit or two), but I saw them a cpl of years later in the 'stripped down' format and didn't think they were half as good - the new group simply aren't as talented/flexible musicians as the old, sacked bunch

Andrew L (Andrew L), Thursday, 15 January 2004 21:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Jeez excuse all my typos above, I was half asleep.

Colleen Conners (Colleen C), Friday, 16 January 2004 01:40 (twenty-two years ago)

I've seen Spiritualized more often than any other band these days and like Grout said above... Just go!

Also, Snrub is totally OTM with Fucked Up Inside eats Royal Albert Hall for breakfast.

eight years pass...

Saw the band Friday night in Austin, my first show since before the pandemic and my first time seeing the band since... 2010? Whenever the Acoustic Mainline tour was. It was a relaxed evening and it felt good to be out and about with a friend, free of responsibilities for a night.

The band and the show was just okay. The only pre Amazing Grace song they played was Shine A Light and there were quite a few songs that seemed very samey. All those songs that sound like Electricity, and garage rock Spiritualized is my least favorite Spiritualized. I think they played almost all of the songs from the new album that hasn't been released yet. It was an outside venue in a neighborhood so the volume was limited and the sound wasn't very good. The bass player was center stage and his playing was too busy and the guitars were mixed waaaay too low. Does anybody go see Spiritualized in hopes of seeing a bass player noodling? There were three guitarists onstage but it was often difficult to make them out or understand why three of them were necessary. A saxophone would have been nice. The backup singers were very good.

There were multiple times when a song would start and I thought "oh, they're playing that great song!" but it would be a newer song that sounded very similar to an older song but was not as good.

I think Jason needs a collaborator or something to get him out of his rut. I like what I've heard of the new album but seeing them was kind of a bummer.
