Apart from his wicked bohemian good looks and the hope that I might hear him do his Coke commercial live, should I do this??

don't do it cybele! come see me dj instead at pharmacie esperanza!

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 15 January 2004 18:10 (twenty-two years ago)

true...true. that is a remarkably enticing offer...

cybele (cybele), Thursday, 15 January 2004 18:15 (twenty-two years ago)

I hear his band he tours with is the shit.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 15 January 2004 18:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, I heard that too. But he's coming with a dj and c'est tout.

cybele (cybele), Thursday, 15 January 2004 18:57 (twenty-two years ago)

D'oh!

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 15 January 2004 18:59 (twenty-two years ago)

I misread that as "c'est trout". I would definitely go see any musician who was touring with a fish.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 15 January 2004 19:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Dan Perry loves Marillion!

Llahtuos Kcin (Nick Southall), Thursday, 15 January 2004 19:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Bastard.

Even though my initial enjoyment of Common's last album gradually turned to loathing, I did go see him live with his dj and it was really fun. He's good live, and while the dj's solo spot SUCKED, he was really musical with in the set as far as changing dynamics along with Common and such.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 15 January 2004 19:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Y'all aint no help, seen?

cybele (cybele), Thursday, 15 January 2004 19:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Except Jordan...xpost.

cybele (cybele), Thursday, 15 January 2004 19:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Also he brought a 13 yr old kid up (who didn't want to give up the mic) from the crowd to freestyle with him, it was cool as shit.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 15 January 2004 19:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Wait til Feb 13, and see Mos Def@Blue Note instead. If you're in NYC, that is.

paulhw (paulhw), Thursday, 15 January 2004 20:17 (twenty-two years ago)

if its the electric circus tour. yes.
imagine the roots not going on a 20 minute jazz funk marathon every fucking song.

imagine common on stage while its all going off and the band are held back till the last song. imagine his big wobbly bobble hat and common breakdancing.
the only bad thing is the incessant "who loves god?" shit.

I saw Common about 3 or 4 years ago at the Jazz Cafe in Camden (just after Like Water For Chocolate came out). He had a decent band (not exactly The Roots, but pretty good) and put on an excellent show - definitely worth seeing. Not sure I could be bothered seeing him with just a DJ, though.

twenty years pass...

Common and Pete Rock just announced a show at Webster Hall. Tickets are only Common and Pete Rock just announced a show at Webster Hall. Tickets are only $200 (though if you buy online, axs fees will probably be like $10 or $12). They're already doing a run of Blue Note shows that sold out fast so this was an extremely nice gesture on their part, IMHO.

Apologies, copy and paste error there caused a big repeat.

birdistheword, Thursday, 19 September 2024 16:53 (one year ago)

And tickets are TWENTY dollars, not 200.

birdistheword, Thursday, 19 September 2024 16:54 (one year ago)

I tried listening to the album but just couldn't take Common

I went to the show and it was pretty awesome. They actually made up the set to look like a wood-paneled basement from the late 1970s or early 1980s, complete with crates of actual vinyl records. At one point, DJ Dummy and Pete Rock essentially gave a demonstration on how to make a beat the way they did it in the '80s, with actual vintage equipment. Posdnuos dropped by and did three numbers with them (including "Me Myself and I"), Geechi Suede also did a couple of numbers as well, but it was clearly Common's show, especially when he found himself unexpectedly freestyling (when he recognized someone who had a sign that said he brought his mother on her birthday, when a random fan was brought on the stage and he wooed her with a freestyle based on whatever details she gave of herself - he never laid a finger on her, but she was more than happy to caress his bald, sweaty head with a handkerchief over and over again). He even weaved in his firm but gentle arguments for everyone to keep the upcoming election in mind. Towards the end, he gave a pretty strong argument for having some foresight and not being apathetic, drawing a connection between the failure to save Marcellus Williams to a Supreme Court that had been irreparably shaped by one election where so many who had voted for Obama stayed at home in crucial districts rather than go out and vote. (It was a vote along ideological lines that ruled against blocking Williams's execution. All three liberal justices said they were in favor of blocking it.)
