I've been slated to DJ a party, the theme of which is "the Future"....I need futuristic music

My plan is to begin with this Hybrid "War of the Worlds" remix thing (once I can find it, dammit), segue into the Flaming Lips' "Can't Get You Out of My Head" cover and then into Kylie's version (or maybe the Blue Monday boot version), and go on from there. I've got stuff like Underworld, Ladytron, Playgroup, M83, the Faint, Godspeed YBE, Tortoise, Stereolab, TV On the Radio, Future Sound of London, Four Tet, Prefuse 73, !!!, Gary Numan, New Order, Joy Division, Duran Duran, Depeche Mode, Deltron 3030, Kool Keith, MF Doom, etc.

I just need some random suggestions of songs that convey "the future". Good catchy techno/hip hop/indie/new wave/experimental stuff that I wouldn't normally think of.

Prince - 'The Future'

retort pouch (retort pouch), Thursday, 15 January 2004 18:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Metal Box still sounds futuristic to me (in a retro way.)

dave225 (Dave225), Thursday, 15 January 2004 18:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Man, find one of those versions of the Dr.Who theme, and don't forget the Kraftwerk.

Nom De Plume (Nom De Plume), Thursday, 15 January 2004 18:33 (twenty-two years ago)

"Lindbegh Hop" Memphis Jug Band, it was the Future in 1921.

Luigi Vampa (Horace Mann), Thursday, 15 January 2004 18:34 (twenty-two years ago)

servotron is yer friend (so to speak) -- though it's a future where the robots kill the humans

Eisbär (llamasfur), Thursday, 15 January 2004 18:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Esquivel

definitely Servotron.

Shakey Mo Collier, Thursday, 15 January 2004 18:37 (twenty-two years ago)

ACEN TO THREAD

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 15 January 2004 18:37 (twenty-two years ago)

King Kong Big Bang space opera

Luigi Vampa (Horace Mann), Thursday, 15 January 2004 18:39 (twenty-two years ago)

w/o the opera

Luigi Vampa (Horace Mann), Thursday, 15 January 2004 18:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Anyone know where I can get that Hybrid remix BTW? I don't even know what it's called.

Gear! (Gear!), Thursday, 15 January 2004 18:55 (twenty-two years ago)

OMG Tad I was gonna suggest Servotron's "Theme for an Ultimate and Inevitable Victory"!

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 15 January 2004 19:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh shit! You also need Man or Astroman? in there.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 15 January 2004 19:01 (twenty-two years ago)

"In The Year 2525"

peepee (peepee), Thursday, 15 January 2004 19:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Cornelius, Richard X, Basement Jaxx, Ms E...So Addictive, Warp Recs, Cosmos, Deltron 3030, Cyclops 4000 f. Kool Keith - 'Space Cadillac', Company Flow - Funcrusher Plus.

Barima (Barima), Thursday, 15 January 2004 19:41 (twenty-two years ago)

You do know that the Human League were originally named The Future, right?

Put both in - check 'The Golden Hour of The Future' for a primer on the latter. Get Numan, Dolby, Bambaataa and Kraftwerk in there too.

Barima (Barima), Thursday, 15 January 2004 19:43 (twenty-two years ago)

I've got stuff like Underworld, Ladytron, Playgroup, M83, the Faint, Godspeed YBE, Tortoise,

I love Tortoise to death, but please don't play it to the dance floor! And don't play GY!BE, either!

Instead:
Madonna: 'Music'
Beastie Boys: 'Intergalactic'
Afrika Bambaataa & The Soul Sonic Force: 'Planet Rock'
Something by Les Rhythmes Digitales
J.Lo: 'Play'
2pac: 'How Do You Want It?'
Missy: 'Work It'
Snoop Dogg: 'From Da Chuuuch To Da Palace'
Hot Butter: 'Popcorn'
Kraftwerk galore, of course
Pink: 'There You Go' (Sovereign remix)
Dizzee Rascal: 'I Luv U'
RAH Band: 'Clouds Across The Moon'
Daft Punk: 'Around The World'
Clipse: 'Grindin''
Cybotron: 'Cosmic Cars'
Inner City: 'Good Life'
Missy: 'The Rain'

All pretty futuristic sounding songs, at least in the cliché sense of the word: Strange/technoid synthesizer riffs etc. And you can dance to them (or most om 'em, at least). Now if you wanna get seriously into into house/techno territory, that's a whole other story. But this doesn't sound like that kind of a party.

Jay Kid (Jay K), Thursday, 15 January 2004 19:55 (twenty-two years ago)

chicks on speed-"last night they landed" or "universal pussy"

Felcher (Felcher), Thursday, 15 January 2004 19:57 (twenty-two years ago)

ellen allien - "trashscapes"
cornelius - "star fruits surf rider"
autechre - "gantz_graf"
schneiderTM - "reality check"

jason m (jason m), Thursday, 15 January 2004 20:00 (twenty-two years ago)

i would also highly recommend any of the tracks from the new _lounge.essenzen.03 compilation too for this sort of dealie.

jason m (jason m), Thursday, 15 January 2004 20:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Trans Am's "Future World" has great vocoder/80s synth stuff.

paulhw (paulhw), Thursday, 15 January 2004 20:12 (twenty-two years ago)

also:

2pac: California Love

Jay Kid (Jay K), Thursday, 15 January 2004 20:14 (twenty-two years ago)

lassigue bendthaus - "fibrelight", "how many angels can dance on the head of a modem?", and pretty much everything else (including a futuristic cover of Prince's "the future")

photek - "KJZ"

fletrejet, Thursday, 15 January 2004 20:21 (twenty-two years ago)

ILM's sense of "party tracks" seems oddly skewed. Remind me never to hire any of you. Except maybe Jay Kid.

Xii (Xii), Thursday, 15 January 2004 20:21 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm cheap!

Jay Kid (Jay K), Thursday, 15 January 2004 20:41 (twenty-two years ago)

jay k's list is great! but paul hw is ON POINT w/ trans am. i'd maybe also throw on some add n to x, not the really grinding harsh stuff but maybe instead some of the tracks that are most like garage rock, tracks like "king wasp" or "sir ape" etc.

vahid (vahid), Thursday, 15 January 2004 20:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Maybe some Raymond Scott?

mzui, Thursday, 15 January 2004 21:06 (twenty-two years ago)

thanks! i also think you can get the star wars theme w. a disco beat.

and the theme from 'dallas' is also strangely futuristic in its own corny kind of way.

Jay Kid (Jay K), Thursday, 15 January 2004 21:08 (twenty-two years ago)

The problem is that "Futuristic" is such an old fashioned concept.

jed_ (jed), Thursday, 15 January 2004 21:14 (twenty-two years ago)

that's not really a problem at all, is it? it's actually a giveaway, as all the people at the party will associate 'futuristic' music w. the cliché meaning of the term - strange metallic sounds and machine-like grooves. that should give the dj plenty of material right there.

Jay Kid (Jay K), Thursday, 15 January 2004 21:18 (twenty-two years ago)

vahid (vahid), Thursday, 15 January 2004 21:29 (twenty-two years ago)

I can't believe nobody said:
MODEL 500 - FUTURE (the b-side to No UFO's)

Also you might try more spacey disco (the Star Wars one is by Meco):
Atmosfear - Dancing in Outer Space
Dexter Wansel - Life on Mars

Some Italo is pretty futuristic:
Charly - Spacerwoman
Pluton & Humanoids - World Invasion
Gino Soccio - The Visitors

Also probably already mentioned but stuff like Thomas Dolby, Kraftwerk, YMO, Devo would probably work..

Also
ESG - UFO
Jamie Jupitor - Computer
Newcleus - Computer Age (Push the Button)

pete from the street, Thursday, 15 January 2004 21:32 (twenty-two years ago)

my b-side to No UFO's is "night drive (to babylon)"

jed_ (jed), Thursday, 15 January 2004 21:33 (twenty-two years ago)

oops- that was s'possed to be
Jamie Jupitor - Computer Power (prod. by Egyptian Lover)

BBC Radiophonic Workshop to thread.

Johnney B (Johnney B), Friday, 16 January 2004 09:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Anyone know where I can get that Hybrid remix BTW? I don't even know what it's called.

Jeff Wayne - The Eve Of The War (Hybrid's Fire In The Sky Remix)
available on:
The War Of The Worlds : ULLAdubULLA The Remix Album

It's all over slsk too, otherwise contact me i can probably put it up somewhere.

Lotsa music from EPCOT and Tommorrowland is available on slsk.

fletrejet, Friday, 16 January 2004 12:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Just play Future Days in its entirety.

Ian Johnson (orion), Friday, 16 January 2004 12:44 (twenty-two years ago)

You need the cheesy Orbital version of the Dr Who theme. And possibly the Hexstatic version of the Hitchhikers Guide theme as well.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 16 January 2004 12:44 (twenty-two years ago)

"eskimo 3" - wiley

ambrose (ambrose), Friday, 16 January 2004 13:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Thanks for the suggestions. I'd play Godspeed and Tortoise basically as moody intro-type things, or if the evening slows down a little bit. If not they'll remain in the back of the box!

keep em coming!

Gear! (Gear!), Friday, 16 January 2004 18:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Giorgio Moroder - The Chase

jed_ (jed), Friday, 16 January 2004 18:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Sun Ra - We Travel the Spaceway, the version from 1963

Dadaismus (Dada), Saturday, 17 January 2004 13:26 (twenty-two years ago)

SPARKS "in the future" sounds like devo/post-punk, but from 75

on the hitchhiker's guide tip, there's a song by Disaster Area called "only the end of the world again", but I don't know if you can find this easily before the party. It's a jangly indie pop sounding thing from 1980, actually quite danceable. you might be able to find the Marvin the Paranoid Android single a little more easily, which is grebt synth-pop mayhem, that's from 81 i think - two singles actually but the more dancey futuristic one is just called "Marvin", not vocodered vox but treated somehow (if you've heard the radio show, it's that voice that stephen moore does for marvin, but he's singing, or ranting actually) and nearly italo style keys. i played it out last time i dj'ed and it (un)surprisingly hit well...

Dr. Annabel Lies (Michael Kelly), Sunday, 18 January 2004 05:08 (twenty-two years ago)

guy - the future

mullygrubber (gaz), Sunday, 18 January 2004 05:35 (twenty-two years ago)

tomorrow never knows

mullygrubber (gaz), Sunday, 18 January 2004 05:40 (twenty-two years ago)

I was going to suggest FSOL ironically! Though along those lines, Amorphous Androgynous - "Liquid Insects"

autechre's "gantz_graf" is a little turgid -- "Cipater," "Clipper" or "Leterel" would be better dancefare.

Plastikman - "Rekall"
Mira Calix - "Prickle"
Lamb - "Trans Fatty Acid" or "Merge"
Plaid - "Reishi"
