I just need some random suggestions of songs that convey "the future". Good catchy techno/hip hop/indie/new wave/experimental stuff that I wouldn't normally think of.

Put both in - check 'The Golden Hour of The Future' for a primer on the latter. Get Numan, Dolby, Bambaataa and Kraftwerk in there too.

I love Tortoise to death, but please don't play it to the dance floor! And don't play GY!BE, either!
Instead:Madonna: 'Music'Beastie Boys: 'Intergalactic'Afrika Bambaataa & The Soul Sonic Force: 'Planet Rock'Something by Les Rhythmes DigitalesJ.Lo: 'Play'2pac: 'How Do You Want It?'Missy: 'Work It'Snoop Dogg: 'From Da Chuuuch To Da Palace'Hot Butter: 'Popcorn'Kraftwerk galore, of coursePink: 'There You Go' (Sovereign remix)Dizzee Rascal: 'I Luv U'RAH Band: 'Clouds Across The Moon'Daft Punk: 'Around The World'Clipse: 'Grindin''Cybotron: 'Cosmic Cars'Inner City: 'Good Life'Missy: 'The Rain'
All pretty futuristic sounding songs, at least in the cliché sense of the word: Strange/technoid synthesizer riffs etc. And you can dance to them (or most om 'em, at least). Now if you wanna get seriously into into house/techno territory, that's a whole other story. But this doesn't sound like that kind of a party.

and the theme from 'dallas' is also strangely futuristic in its own corny kind of way.

on the hitchhiker's guide tip, there's a song by Disaster Area called "only the end of the world again", but I don't know if you can find this easily before the party. It's a jangly indie pop sounding thing from 1980, actually quite danceable. you might be able to find the Marvin the Paranoid Android single a little more easily, which is grebt synth-pop mayhem, that's from 81 i think - two singles actually but the more dancey futuristic one is just called "Marvin", not vocodered vox but treated somehow (if you've heard the radio show, it's that voice that stephen moore does for marvin, but he's singing, or ranting actually) and nearly italo style keys. i played it out last time i dj'ed and it (un)surprisingly hit well...

autechre's "gantz_graf" is a little turgid -- "Cipater," "Clipper" or "Leterel" would be better dancefare.
Plastikman - "Rekall"Mira Calix - "Prickle"Lamb - "Trans Fatty Acid" or "Merge"Plaid - "Reishi"
