and oh yeah, something about Michael Jackson

The Associated Press-Ipsos poll about celebrities on trial is based on telephone interviews with 1,000 randomly selected adults from all states except Alaska and Hawaii. The interviews were conducted Jan. 9-11 by Ipsos-Public Affairs.
The results were weighted to represent the population by demographic factors such as age, sex, region and education.
No more than one time in 20 should chance variations in the sample cause the results to vary by more than three percentage points from the answers that would be obtained if all Americans were polled.
This margin of sampling error is larger for responses of subgroups, such as income categories. There are other sources of potential error in polls, including the wording and order of questions.

Pop is the new alternative.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 15 January 2004 21:26 (twenty-two years ago)

hell yeah! justin timberlake = the new stephen malkmus

Jay Kid (Jay K), Thursday, 15 January 2004 21:32 (twenty-two years ago)

that's a typical poll question that is soooo misleading, as it relys on whatever most people's personal definition of "pop" is....for example, some Beyonce fan isn't a "pop" fan; she like "r&B" or a Good Charlotte fan doesn't like pop; he like "punk" or a Dixie Chicks fan doesn't like "pop" they like "country" even when they all really like pop in the broader sense.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Thursday, 15 January 2004 23:34 (twenty-two years ago)

But but but look! Evidence that America is musically backwards! See! Look!

nate detritus (natedetritus), Thursday, 15 January 2004 23:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Not even in the broader sense - all three of your examples are very pop.

billstevejim, Thursday, 15 January 2004 23:53 (twenty-two years ago)

but 51% DO watch TV shows about cooking or furnishing homes! Yowsa! I feel so impractical.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 15 January 2004 23:55 (twenty-two years ago)

But but but look! Evidence that America is musically backwards! See! Look!

by a massive two percent margin, too!

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Thursday, 15 January 2004 23:56 (twenty-two years ago)

I think the mainstream definition of "pop" is different from ours.

billstevejim, Thursday, 15 January 2004 23:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Also, they've just been asked questions about a horribly deformed freak and accused child molester who is called the king of POP then they get asked if they like POP music! I'm sure their first reaction is to say yes!

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Friday, 16 January 2004 00:06 (twenty-two years ago)

49% seems a really high percentage to be a "fan of pop music". as Matt pointed out, most people I know who listen to pop music (broadly defined) would never actually define themselves as listening to "pop music". Even many of them that do listen to straightforward teen pop groups wouldn't go so far as to call themselves "fans". It'd be completely different if the question was "do you listen to popular music", but, well.

xpost yeah haha! but only 5% said they didn't listen to Michael Jackson music!

Poppy (poppy), Friday, 16 January 2004 00:16 (twenty-two years ago)

I didn't have much of a point there, did I. Basically: I thought America was the land of RRRRROCK!! only to find 'tis a 95% MJ listening nation. Wow.

Poppy (poppy), Friday, 16 January 2004 00:21 (twenty-two years ago)

"There are other sources of potential error in polls, including the wording and order of questions."

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 16 January 2004 01:38 (twenty-two years ago)

two weeks pass...
MJ is not the king of pop. Elvis is still King of rock n roll. The beatles the biggest most popular act in the record buisness. Let the records speak for themselves. It is media hype that has crown the pretender to the throne. MJ nevered acomplish what the beatles did in just one year 1964 . fifty percent of all records sold that year were beatle records in the US market. THE BEAtles had to conquer america and they were the first european act to do so. common get the facts straight. thriller is a great album . The king is still king and look at the feats that elvis did crossing all genders of music styles. Lets hear mj do a country song or gospel or show tune like the king could do and the beatles learn from.

Huckadelphia (Horace Mann), Thursday, 5 February 2004 14:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Does "The Wiz" not count as show tunes?

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Thursday, 5 February 2004 14:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Erm, I thought "Thriller" wasn't just a great album, but one of the biggest selling albums of all time!!!!!!!!

Can't get more "pop" than that!!!!!!!!!!
