Clubs in the UK?

Are there any good sources of information about clubs in the UK or any good blogs about clubs? I am really into clubs and I like to travel about to check out different cities but now all the mags have gone (or gone bad), I don't know how to get information on stuff.
Indie clubs are pretty cool nowadays it seems...
Are there any good clubs in the UK might be another good question...

Radio Babylon in Edinburgh. Last Friday of every month. Eclectic beyond belief. Surprising, charming and utterly danceable.

A bunch of people I know rate optimo too. I've never been tho.

hmmmm (neil simpson), Friday, 16 January 2004 11:24 (twenty-two years ago)

I know about Optimo - isn't Twitch from there on this list.
There must be more ace places that, erm, aren't in Scotland?
Or some info?

Debord (Debord), Friday, 16 January 2004 11:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Being someone who lives in Edinburgh, I am surprised to see someone recommending a club in this fair city. Radio Babylon is OK, but I wouldn't travel for it.

It surely depends what you want. I have had a lot of fun at Electric Chair in Manchester when I have been, though.

Debord - what is wrong with Scotland, exactly?!

It's a long way away!
I wonder why there aren't any club blogs?
The clubs I know that are good are Giant Robot and The Outlaws in Bristol. They play decent eclectic music, the booze is cheap, it's cheap or free to get in and they always provide a good night out.
Other stuff like Trigger in Birmingham (although it's often a little dark) and the Liars Club in Nottingham are good too.
Electric Chair is cool, but the Unabombers are a bit 'Jockey Slut' sometimes aren't they (not that that's always a bad thing)?

EVOL in Liverpool, run by the guys out of Ladytron. They play housey stuff, LCD Soundsystem, 80's influenced electro and r'n'b mixed in with Black Sabbath, Sonic Youth and Joy Division played as if it was 80's influenced electro or house.

Great night all round.

Jim Robinson (Original Miscreant), Friday, 16 January 2004 16:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Goddamn that Liverpool Evol sounds good. There's an Evol in Edinburgh. It is shite. It's been playing the same tedious indie for the last ten years.

hmmmm (neil simpson), Friday, 16 January 2004 16:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Don't know if the two EVOL's are linked. Anyone?

EVOL (Liverpool) is the kinda place where you have too much fun to particularly care about the few posers around, or the fact the girls from Ladytron are DANCING NEXT TO YOU.

The venue is also fantastic. They show films on flat screens all round the place: weird, culty stuff with the sound off and no subtitles, so you find yourself just staring...

Jim Robinson (Original Miscreant), Sunday, 18 January 2004 20:42 (twenty-two years ago)

They're not linked.

Keith Watson (kmw), Sunday, 18 January 2004 21:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, that's satisfied that mini-quest for information.

Jim Robinson (Original Miscreant), Sunday, 18 January 2004 23:26 (twenty-two years ago)

That EVOL sounds cool.
Maybe the lack of action on this thread means that clubs are, like, totally dead, man?

Debord (Debord), Monday, 19 January 2004 11:58 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm planning on (read: thinking about and not getting off my fat arse long enough to have yet done anything about) starting a night in London soon with the theme "old, new, borrowed and blue", ie forgotten tracks, spanking new unreleased tracks and demos, interesting covers, and stuff with swearing in. The night will know no genre and will be just as likely to feature Liza Minelli as Genaside II or Jimi Tenor or Gene Clark.

As such, I have two questions:

1. would anyone come?
2. does anyone want to muck in?

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Monday, 19 January 2004 12:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Me and some friends have just started a cool (well i think so anyway :) ) club....
its called Dukes and its at the Duke of Clarence near angel in London.

It runs the last sunday of every month, and is in fact this sunday 25th if you fancy coming please!

The club is for all you gentlemen and ladies and is free. There are 2 cool new bands playing (the german exchange and ludo),there are cucumber sandwiches and whisky, you can play cards and chess, read from a selection of old books, relax on the sofas, talk and laugh....
We are also showing old films (third man)
Plus we're gonna play some old jazz (buddy rich, mingus..) some funk, some edith piaf, elvis....

The theme is 30's/40's so feel free to come dressed up...i'm going in cricket whites.

Does this sound fun for anyone? i'd love it if you came along...

Thanks!

Mr Monket (apn99), Monday, 19 January 2004 12:59 (twenty-two years ago)

that club sounds bloody splendid, Mr Monket. Expect me there. What's the timing?

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Monday, 19 January 2004 13:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Tomorrow we should have a website up, so i will post the flyer...in the meantime here's a little more info:

well hopefully starts around 4 with the film and then the 2 bands at 6pm. After that some music into the night...

Its just off the essex road see
streetmap link 140 rotherfield street

You can walk/take a bus from angel tube (num 73) and go down the essex road. Get off when you see yellow bistro on right and its next to the post office.
Hope directions are OK :)

Thanks! see you sun

On the Evol question, no - they are definitely not associated. I know the guy who runs Evol Edinburgh, and it is - I am sure he won't mind me saying - an indie club. Plain and simple.

He does a night called Extra Width which is a lot better, more fun and representative of the music he likes. When you start an indie club and end up getting 400 people a week for the past 5 years, it is difficult to be adventurous (especially if your mortgage rests on it)

___ (___), Monday, 19 January 2004 14:04 (twenty-two years ago)

1. would anyone come?
2. does anyone want to muck in?

1. Yes.
2. Yes. But only when I get off my fat arse and move to London in October.

Jim Robinson (Original Miscreant), Monday, 19 January 2004 17:28 (twenty-two years ago)

It is perfectly possible to have an "adventurous" indie club and make money - National Pop League in Glasgow can be one of the best nights out and is always rammed to the rafters. I have no idea if they make money or not though, so it's a crap answer. It's a great club though.

I would put a shout in for the Winchester Club in Glasgow also.

ailsa (ailsa), Monday, 19 January 2004 17:33 (twenty-two years ago)

See! Look! more clubs in Scotland - maybe I should move there?
Is that where everyone has fun? All the time?

Debord (Debord), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 10:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Where is Extra Width these days? I've not been since the gilded balloon saloon burnt down. I'd like to go back.

leigh (leigh), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 12:29 (twenty-two years ago)

I am still thinking about joining Scrabble club.

What?

I like the sound of The Man From Imperial's cucumber sandwich and whisky fest. Charlie I will play at your club if you have cucumber sandwiches too. Watch me wreck the mic...

Sarah (starry), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 12:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Well this is a club/gig/revvue in Glasgow: End of the Month Club...

Old Fart!!! (oldfart_sd), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 20:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Extra Width may be on at the Southern Cross on Cockburn Street. I did go along once a couple of months ago, but it's a terrible place for a night. Don't know if it's still at it.

Keith Watson (kmw), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 20:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Any other mini-quests for information?

Keith Watson (kmw), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 21:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Will someone post another one of these? What do you think these LA kids are listening to? (LOTS OF DUMB PICS)
Maybe for a UK club? It would be interesting to see the differences in styles. And funny.

Adm Michel (adam michel), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 21:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Any other mini-quests for information?

Plenty...

Jim Robinson (Original Miscreant), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 22:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Extra Width is on now and then at Southern Cross Cafe, Victoria Street (Edinburgh)

May have a London branch soon, as Stuart Mogwai has just moved there.
