DMX "What's my name?" vs Snoop Dogg "What's my name?"

These are both good, but dmx shades it. Very dark piece of music. You get the feeling he's a much unhappier man than Snoop. There's a real sense of frustration at his inability to connect with other human beings in this tune. "How many times i have to tell you rap niggas / i have no friends...we gonna get to the bottom of this shit if it takes all night" It's a rather scary portrait of a brooding loner, ready to explode violently at any second. the only sign of happiness in this one is when he describes the violent beating he'll dish out as "service with a smile." Very gothic musical backdrop, to these ears anyway.

Snoop's tune is a ray of sunshine in comparison. The uplifting gospel chorus. The bouncy, flatulent bassline. The vocodered "bow-wow-wow-yippie-yo'"s. he sounds relaxed: his delivery speeds up and slows down to squeeze words in, but he never raises his voice. there's some violence here "robbin motherfuckers.../never hesitate to put a nigger on his back" but it's more cartoonish than Scary DMX.

which of these "what's my name?"s do you prefer?

very good analysis, kilian. i don't even know the dmx track, and even though i generally consider him a schmuck, you made me wanna hear it. i'm gonna click my slsk icon right ... now!

I prefer "What's My Name?" by the Clash

X wins for the beat and for passive-aggressive cries for help like "I'm NOT a NICE PERSON" and "how many times do I have to tell you rap niggas I have no friends?".

Okay, even though I see "What's My Name" as the beginning of the end of Snoop as a genuinely compelling, extremely odd and idiosycratic MC....I'll still take the effortless, air-conditioned "What's My Name" over DMX (even though that sond is great, too! --- Al, thanks for reminding me of "I'm NOT a NICE PERSON" which was my fav DMX line until "it's ALL FOR THE KIDS" in X Gonna Give It To Ya")

Snoop's already starting to repeat himself here, but he's still got that killer, offbeat flow that he's lost somewhere down the line in favor of his repetitive type "Beautiful/P.I.M.P." type stuff he does now (at this point he's essentially the West Coast's Busta Rhymes, just a talented but lazy guy that gets by on remixes due to tremendous fan affection and a ton of charisma).....

But everything is still aces in What's My Name...from the opening line's sort of oddly poetic imagry ("From the depths of the sea, back to the block) and the his just absolutely killer delivery of classic lines like "still on hit - legit - now I'm on parole....stroll" or the way he lets his voice go all high an effeminate on "like I said/ ni99as can't with this/ and ni99as can't with that"....

Or the the way he rushes together and stretches out syllables on "Tick, tock / nevadaglock / just some nuts...andacock/Robbinmuthafuckas then...I...killthem...bloodclot"

And then...to top it off...the almost haiku feeling of Snoop's best line EVAH!: "He is I/and I am him/Slim with the tilted brim"

All the while Dr. Dre mines the last gold out of his vein of G-Funk...big blockbuster style....P-Funk farting's last great gasp.

Clearly this matchup is all about DMX; I will take "deranged" over "laid-back" almost any day of the week.

hmmm...snoop's most recent album has some signs of greatness. the opening track (bar the intro skit) is gorgeous - "da boss would like to see you". his lazy style is perfect for a go-nowhere intro track like that. the rest of the record is pretty hit-and-miss, but i like his delivery so much i still enjoy it.

i've decided the moving-yet-world-weary ballad "here we go again" is an even better dmx track than "what's my name?" he's good when he goes into conversational-storyteller mode, and i really like his pronounciation of "under normal circumstances, he would be a marked man." great!

Snoop Dogg is unquestionably the best hip hop celebrity ever.

I like Snoop - Whats My Name Pt.2 w/ Timbaland a lot better than either of these.
