Cover Songs Don't Have to Be Lame...

Hi: I'm the lead singer of an all girl punk band in Philadelphia, PA. At the risk of sounding lame and having someone make fun of me, I'm looking for ideas for a non-obvious cover song for us to do. Any ideas?
Thanks a lot.

Carrie Crush, Friday, 16 January 2004 22:43 (twenty-two years ago)

non-obvious meaning novelty?
i've always wanted to hear a punk cover of "roundabout" by Yes.

Felcher (Felcher), Friday, 16 January 2004 22:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Hmm, by non-obvious I guess I meant non-punk songs.
Thanks!

Carrie Crush, Friday, 16 January 2004 22:59 (twenty-two years ago)

I used to think that Elliot Smith's Needle in the Hay would have been a good punk cover song, but since he died it might be a little obvious....

How about The Chain by Fleetwood Mac? that's prob. already been done, too....I suck, nevermind.

(')Carrie(') -- if "Rounabout" ain't 'un-punk' 'nuff f'you, then consider "Supper's Raedy" (that's Genensis, yep) or the entirety of Yes's Tales From Topographic Oceans

"The Riddle"

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Friday, 16 January 2004 23:14 (twenty-two years ago)

I've always wanted to hear the Rolling Stones do Abba's "Does Your Mother Know." I could also hear punk version, though it might qualify as non-obvious.

dylan (dylan), Friday, 16 January 2004 23:15 (twenty-two years ago)

As long as you steer clear of the "wacky punked up cover of current popular Top 40 hit," you're doing okay.

Ben Boyer (Ben Boyer), Friday, 16 January 2004 23:15 (twenty-two years ago)

I've always wanted to hear the Rolling Stones do Abba's "Does Your Mother Know."

dylan, that's a fine thing to wish for -- i'd be really amazed to hear smth like that myself -- but the, uh, stones 'd be never able to make it 'swinnnnng' like the four half-blonde 'bba did.

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Friday, 16 January 2004 23:22 (twenty-two years ago)

I guess I've just always thought it be cool if the Stones did a covers album devoted to songs modeled on the thier own stuff. Possible hall-of-mirrors effect might ensue.

dylan (dylan), Friday, 16 January 2004 23:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Something by Serge Gainsbourg or Kraftwerk would be swell.

Nom De Plume (Nom De Plume), Friday, 16 January 2004 23:41 (twenty-two years ago)

John Kongos, "He's Gonna Step On You Again."

I would really love to hear this punked out.

Joseph McCombs, Saturday, 17 January 2004 00:16 (twenty-two years ago)

That (Kongos) is a really good suggestion!

You're a group of musicians! Do you not know ANY songs between the lot of you?

tweemu (Jody Beth Rosen), Saturday, 17 January 2004 00:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Sheesh. If you're going to ridicule her, then at least be witty.

Um, about Alicia Keys "So Simple" or Fela Kuti "Lady". All girl punk Fela would start sounding like X-Ray Spex at some point, I suppose.

wuperetta, Saturday, 17 January 2004 01:18 (twenty-two years ago)

i wasn't trying to be witty, i actually am kind of irritated by her question! dude, just find a song you like and cover it!

tweemu (Jody Beth Rosen), Saturday, 17 January 2004 01:31 (twenty-two years ago)

dude, just find a song you like and cover it!

as fair a suggestion as any, certainly.
then again, they did appear to have a bit of a problem with that very thing, didn't they?

further suggestions: rickie lee jones, queen latifa, angelique kidjo

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Saturday, 17 January 2004 01:39 (twenty-two years ago)

You're irritated by HOW she asked the question, as opposed to what the question is.

For example, most people appear less "irritating" because they post a question like "Great punk covers of the non-obvious variety" and everyone jumps to thread. Their ulterior motive is probably to get some ideas for their all-girl punk band but they are to cool to admit it. Oh well.

wuperetta, Saturday, 17 January 2004 01:42 (twenty-two years ago)

listen, if you find the question so irritating, just skip it and answer something you feel compelled to think about. don't be a snob about it. jeez. i was just trying to get some fresh ideas.
thanks to those who replied.

Anyone else here think pop-punk covers of "Land Down Under" are ace?

jole, Saturday, 17 January 2004 08:14 (twenty-two years ago)

I've been waiting for people to cover Human Hands songs, since they're pretty good early-80s pop-punk songs that never really got recorded well. "My Kitchen," "Dilemmas," "New Look," and "I Got Mad" are all good candidates. The only cd is out of print--try eBay.

Some local indie cretin covered that recently. Made me want to punch him in the cock.

"Melt Show" by the Old 97's

Gear! (Gear!), Monday, 19 January 2004 06:26 (twenty-two years ago)

"Black Maria" by Todd Rundgren is a slower metal-type tune and would do the trick, but MUCH less obvious would be "Oh Babe What Would You Say" by Hurricane Smith. Rotsa Ruck!

jimwentworth (wench), Friday, 23 January 2004 02:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Do "I Fall To Pieces" by Patsy Cline. About two minutes, forty-nine seconds. Should be great.

Mr. Blue Sky - ELO

It's a real stomper

LondonLee (LondonLee), Friday, 23 January 2004 03:32 (twenty-two years ago)

yer from philly, you should cover the o'jays or the spinners.

The entire Aphrodite's Child 666 album.

Or maybe just "Babylon". With fake applause and all.

donut bitch (donut), Friday, 23 January 2004 06:34 (twenty-two years ago)

God Only Knows by the Beach Boys has probably been done to death by bands from all over, but I think it'd work great as a punk cover with girls singing...

Shakira's Whenever, Wherever could be good if your drummer is any cop and you can find a nice guitar sound for that accordian hook...maybe a bit obvious though?

Earlier Serge Gainsboug suggestion was totally OT$$...a version of Bonnie and Clyde with huge crunching powerchords would be great.

Harry Pussy did a great version of Showroom Dummies on their first album. Took me about ten listens to figure out what it was though.
