you never liked the Nevilles Alex? whilst i'd concede that a lot of the post yellow moon stuff is meh, the preceding stuff is fantastic!

The rest of the album is wonderful, if not quite up to that level.

Saw Aaron Neville last night (with a band featuring his brother Charles on sax) at the reopened Howard Theatre. Wow,at 71, he can still sing. Quite a range. Did 2 hours worth of covers--"A A change is Gonna Come," "Ain't No Sunshine," "Be My Baby," "Work with me Annie"....

I love this song.
― a regina spektor is haunting europe (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 6 August 2012 14:00 (thirteen years ago)
Me too (but Aaron did not sing it last night. I forget the name of the Neville Brothers song he did. He always does "Tell it Like it is" both solo and with the Neville Brothers, but that's not the one I am thinking of.)
― curmudgeon, Monday, 6 August 2012 14:12 (thirteen years ago)
i also love this song. had a huge impact on me when i first heard it. i've played it for a number of people over the years, but some are turned off by the slick production & arrangement. squares.
― contenderizer, Monday, 6 August 2012 14:49 (thirteen years ago)
People need to get past their Daniel Lanois and slick production hatred for this song
― curmudgeon, Monday, 6 August 2012 15:00 (thirteen years ago)
Aaron Neville's hit 1991 cover of "Everybody Plays The Fool" is pretty damn cool.

Born to cover this:

Amazingly, the Steve Miller version is funkier and more Meters-like.

ennnh... I can take or leave both of those covers. For a band that has long struggled to capture on a recording what makes them great, I think Yellow Moon does a good job, slickness or no. Decent originals, and some cool covers by Dylan and Link Wray. 1990s, post-Aaron duetting with Linda Ronstadt, is where the production really starts to get gloopy.

You people are all fucked. This album is all about "With God On Our Side."
― Naive Teen Idol, Tuesday, 2 July 2013 00:40 (twelve years ago)
cool covers by Dylan
But yeah seriously, the quality of the Dylan covers makes me wonder why they've insisted on playing "Love The One You're With" at every damn show I've ever seen by them.
― New Authentic Everybootsy Collins (Dan Peterson), Tuesday, 2 July 2013 03:52 (twelve years ago)
My guess is because Lanois suggested the "cool" covers, not any of the Nevilles.
― Naive Teen Idol, Tuesday, 2 July 2013 04:01 (twelve years ago)
Also: the bros probably share the Stills sentiments
― A deeper shade of lol (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 2 July 2013 11:15 (twelve years ago)
Fair enough. I'm probably one of the only ones in the audience wishing Art would sing "Cha Dooky Doo."
― New Authentic Everybootsy Collins (Dan Peterson), Tuesday, 2 July 2013 13:50 (twelve years ago)
Me too.Saw them years ago in R.I. and was very disappointed with the song choices. Never really got into a New Orleans groove.

album loses steam in the back half, but the dylan covers are both great, also link wray's "fire & brimstone", sam cooke's "a change is gonna come". most of the originals aren't quite at that level (title track excepted), but i do like "my blood" and "sister rosa".
― Me and my pool noodle (contenderizer), Tuesday, 2 July 2013 14:54 (twelve years ago)
"A Change Is Gonna Come" is total Oh Mercy territory, with some dissonant synth leading into the sax solo. Great one.
― lols lane (Eazy), Tuesday, 2 July 2013 16:57 (twelve years ago)
"Wake Up" is terrific.
