Look, I just cut and paste, OK? Take it up elsewhere.

the deadline sucks dude - please increase it to Tuesday at midnight so more people can play

stevem (blueski), Sunday, 18 January 2004 03:01 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm sure more votes will come in once we get to find out today's charts! :)

Tom May (Tom May), Sunday, 18 January 2004 13:00 (twenty-two years ago)

2Pac featuring Notorious BIG - Runnin' (Dying To Live) #11
Easyworld - 'Til The Day (That I Die) #28

The Delays - Long Time Coming #34
The Offspring - Hit That #26
Zutons - Pressure Point #32

Not many obvious big NEs there... might Kelis actually have a chance to topple the awful No. 1? Heart says yes... head says there are too many people disinterested enough in music to keep M. McManus there.
#1: M. McManus.

Bonus Round - which of the following records will chart NEAREST TO #30?

Beyonce.

Tom May (Tom May), Sunday, 18 January 2004 19:08 (twenty-two years ago)

2Pac featuring Notorious BIG - Runnin' (Dying To Live) #12 (scraping the barrel, maybe, but I like it)
Easyworld - 'Til The Day (That I Die) #29
JC Chasez featuring Dirt McGirt - Some Girls #15 (though it would probably go higher if N'Sync had been bigger here - nobody in Britain could ever name any of the four who weren't called Justin Timberlake ... haven't heard this, but having been listening to a lot of mid-90s Wu-Tang solo albums this weekend I'd enjoy seeing ODB back in the chart)
Maroon 5 - Harder To Breathe #14
Ryan Adams - So Alive #37
Scissor Sisters - Comfortably Numb #11 (no Top 10 new entries, shock, horror ... "I'm old enough to remember when that happened all the time" grumbles anyone who listened to the Top 40 more than 10 years ago)
The Bandits - The Warning #41
Delays - Long Time Coming #36
The Offspring - Hit That #25
Zutons - Pressure Point #33

#1 - Michelle McManus (through gritted teeth, again - the last song to climb 3-2-1 was Deep Blue Something's "Breakfast at Tiffany's", as atrocious as "Milkshake" is great ... the only thing stopping me predicting Kelis for #1 is my cynicism about the idea of a song climbing to #1 in this era)

Bonus Round - which of the following records will chart NEAREST TO #30?

Kevin Lyttle (he'll be at #39, I reckon, while Beyonce is at #17)

robin carmody (robin carmody), Sunday, 18 January 2004 20:14 (twenty-two years ago)

2Pac featuring Notorious BIG - Runnin' (Dying To Live) - #16

Ryan Adams - So Alive - #44
Scissor Sisters - Comfortably Numb - #12
The Bandits - The Warning - #54
Delays - Long Time Coming - #39
The Offspring - Hit That - #19
Zutons - Pressure Point - #47

#1: Michelle
Bonus Round: BEYONCE

scott pl. (scott pl.), Sunday, 18 January 2004 21:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Oops, forgot to nominate a #1 above. Just to differ/gamble, though I'll almost certainly be wrong:

Kelis, "Milkshake"

Snnap Dragon (snnap dragon), Sunday, 18 January 2004 21:17 (twenty-two years ago)

2Pac featuring Notorious BIG - Runnin' (Dying To Live) #16
Easyworld - 'Til The Day (That I Die) #23
JC Chasez featuring Dirt McGirt - Some Girls #11
Maroon 5 - Harder To Breathe #14
Ryan Adams - So Alive #46
Scissor Sisters - Comfortably Numb #18
The Bandits - The Warning #52
Delays - Long Time Coming #35
The Offspring - Hit That #8
Zutons - Pressure Point #29

Closest to 30: Freeland, because the last one of theirs went in around 35, and this one is loads better.

#1 KELIS! Look, I'll spend my entire life savings importing the damn thing if necessary.

edwardo, Sunday, 18 January 2004 21:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Right, I think I'll probably nix this round cos I've messed up the logistics of it, or something - I can't believe I've not missed something out here, and it's just gone a bit tits up.

I also can't find the top 75, which does matter because I need to find the positions of the four picks that missed the top 40. When I do, the scores will be updated. At the moment, Scott Plagenhoef, Robin Carmody and Flowersdie are the joint leaders on thirty points each.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Monday, 19 January 2004 10:07 (twenty-two years ago)

er, does that include my "change of mind before the deadline"?

mark grout (mark grout), Monday, 19 January 2004 10:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Mark - yes. You're on 27 points at the moment.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Monday, 19 January 2004 10:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Here is a link to the top 75 charts if you can't find them:-

stevem (blueski), Monday, 19 January 2004 13:49 (twenty-two years ago)

there must be somebody out there listing the top 75 every week still? at least from Tuesday when Music Week comes out. very sad state of affairs otherwise.

xpost. Heck, just for fun. Like that grand national with the false start.

btw, why? What's the problem exactly?

mark grout (mark grout), Monday, 19 January 2004 14:54 (twenty-two years ago)

All been a bit hasty this week. I posted the last one on Thursday, didn't get round to this till about Saturday, I think.

I've also forgotten to put the random number in.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Monday, 19 January 2004 14:56 (twenty-two years ago)

random number was thirty, wasn't it?

mark grout (mark grout), Monday, 19 January 2004 14:58 (twenty-two years ago)

No, SPECIAL BONUS ROUND was nearest to thirty.

Ian SPACK, Tuesday, 20 January 2004 13:54 (twenty-two years ago)

It's not past the deadline yet is it? Also, is the ranking list thing up yet?

Can the moderator keep an eye on Alexfack as I think he's looking over my shoulder and copying my answers (or he was last week anyway).

Ian SPACK, Tuesday, 20 January 2004 13:58 (twenty-two years ago)

I thought this round had been scrapped or something - so I haven't voted.

WBS can you roll 2d20 for all my answers please?

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 14:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Midweek thingies are out anyway. Surely the magnificent Scissor Sisters won't actually end up in the top 10 though...

edward o (edwardo), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 14:05 (twenty-two years ago)

I like the idea of the Scissor Sisters and I quite like the other stuff I've heard but "Comfortably Numb" took my '03 OK-This-Is-Really-Getting-On-My-Tits-Now fastest decline in liking a record award.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 14:09 (twenty-two years ago)

This week's chart could be great, or it could be shit. Scissor Sisters going top 10 would make me a very happy Swygart indeed, as would the Zutons' record staying in the top 20. Either of them being edged out by Maroon sodding 5 would annoy me muchly.

But basically, getting Alistair Griffin and Ultrabeat out of the top 20 would be a nice thing.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 16:33 (twenty-two years ago)

as would the Zutons' record staying in the top 20

Wha? Are they poised to be in the top 20? And between that and the FF single going top three, did I blink and miss the moment when the NME became relevant again?

comfortably numb is surely a move your feet-style red herring - I like it a lot but I hope some of their irreverent 10cc/elton john-like stuff finds an audience, too.

scott pl. (scott pl.), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 16:44 (twenty-two years ago)

The Zutons are in the mix in the top 20, as are Delays, Maroon 5, Offspring, Ryan Adams and Tupac & Biggie. Just outside there we have Easyworld. Weird week.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 16:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Is this round going to stand then, or not?

Tom May (Tom May), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 17:14 (twenty-two years ago)

THis round, no, but the one before will. Round 2's picks will go up on Thursday.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 17:15 (twenty-two years ago)

The Zutons in the top twenty- can you say "buy in"?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 17:16 (twenty-two years ago)
