Mark E. Smith and Steve Albini, Together Again for the First Time

No, It's no a C-Man thread.
Hypothetical Scenario: If these two were to collaborate, would it bear fruit, or would their naturally abrasive personalities lead to an gladitorial donnybrook, and the grisly mutual death of two beloved (???) alt-cult curmudegeons?
(If the idea of these two in the same room makes your head explode, you can replace them with Billy Corgan and Thom Yorke.)

Albini worships, or at least, worshipped the Fall at one point, but surely knows how difficult the Mark E. is to work with, so I'm sure it would be an awkward and civil meeting that would end in no tears, if they were forced in a room together. Again, just stupid conjecture on my part.

(like Mark E. can afford to record with Albini anyway, doubting the latter would give the former an "i wuv your band" discount at this point, for good reason)

Okay, donut bitch...whats your op-ed on the undercard bout?
I suspect (though I might be wrong) that after a couple hours of angrily snapping his bony little fingers (to indicate "Speed it up, Yorke, Speed it up! I want En-er-gy!") Corgan would merely throw his hands up and snarl: "Thats it! Get out! I'll do the entire album by myself!"

I'd like to get Billy Corgan and Thom Yorke drunk and pull a Cask Of Amontillado on them. Their duet of screams as I walled them into the cellar would easily make either my Smashing Pumpkins or Radiohead POX.

As for Mark E. Smith and Steve Albini, I think they'd just end up making a mediocre Fall album.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Sunday, 18 January 2004 23:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Me somehow doubts it'd yield something mediocre.
Rather, it'd either suck gnat's gonads through a straw - or have'n'swing its dinosaur balls proudly.

Steve Albini is a studio engineer, he doesn't write you the songs FFS

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Monday, 19 January 2004 10:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, but he sure fucked up that last Godspeed album. Some bands sound like they really suit the Albini way. Other bands really, really don't.

Jason J, Monday, 19 January 2004 12:53 (twenty-two years ago)

so I'm sure it would be an awkward and civil meeting that would end in no tears, if they were forced in a room together.

i read this as "forced to room together." I smell SITCOM!

"On tonight's episode of Albini & the Mark, the Mark forgets to pay the electricity bill for the sixth month in arrow, forcing Albini to record by candlelight and hijinx ENSUE! Guest-starring David Yow as The Wacky Landlord"

Kingfishee (Kingfish), Monday, 19 January 2004 13:02 (twenty-two years ago)

oops, that should be "...in a row"

Kingfishee (Kingfish), Monday, 19 January 2004 13:03 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't know what would result but I would buy it and enjoy it

chris besinger (chris besinger), Monday, 19 January 2004 18:12 (twenty-two years ago)

I think albini's "naturally abrasive" personality is overplayed. I've heard he's pretty nice and professional when you record with him.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Monday, 19 January 2004 18:14 (twenty-two years ago)

steve is rather mellow in my experience, a friend of mine had a plesant encounter w/ mr smith over the summer as well.

don henley, now that guy's abrasive

chris besinger (chris besinger), Monday, 19 January 2004 18:27 (twenty-two years ago)

i just read the article in bbgun about joe strummer where henley refuses to shake hands when joe introduces himself. "i know who you are," was henley's only response.

speaking of albini's rate card... can anyone explain it? www.electrical.com, http://www.electrical.com/booking.php . . .

seems strangely cheap to get him to engineer your record.

ken taylrr, Tuesday, 20 January 2004 00:33 (twenty-two years ago)

i don't know in what crazy bizarro world $950 a day is cheap, but that's just me.

the surface noise (electricsound), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 00:34 (twenty-two years ago)

he charges $350 to engineer not $950....

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 00:43 (twenty-two years ago)

yes but the room costs as well

the surface noise (electricsound), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 00:44 (twenty-two years ago)

of course, but you don't necessarily have to have him there to use it....I really don't think it's a bad deal at all, given the facilities...Also, I know for a fact that he will record bands for a lot less than that, if they aren't well off and he likes them.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 00:45 (twenty-two years ago)

I mean, I don't know if you've priced recording, but it ain't cheap...I doubt you'll find a another guy that's recorded Page & Plant, Nirvana, etc... working for $350 a day....

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 00:46 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah i know what recording costs. albini would be far from my first choice of engineer as well, cheap or not
