Teenagers who don't like pointless teenage music: C or D?

Just wondering. Some people seem to respect them (erm... us) but some people seem to think it's a waste of youth to sit around listening to Captain Beefheart instead of going to wild par-tays. Thoughts? Who cares? I'm bored.

Stupid (Stupid), Monday, 19 January 2004 00:44 (twenty-two years ago)

i wouldn't have been going to these parties regardless of what crap i listened to.

the surface noise (electricsound), Monday, 19 January 2004 00:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Hey!, no kids are allowed to listen to that adult music.

A Nairn (moretap), Monday, 19 January 2004 00:48 (twenty-two years ago)

teenagers who don't like pointless teenage music
VS
adults who like pointless teenage music just fine
?

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Monday, 19 January 2004 00:53 (twenty-two years ago)

it's win-win!!

the surface noise (electricsound), Monday, 19 January 2004 00:54 (twenty-two years ago)

only with the elder half of the win-winners ending up with two black eyes each, eh?

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Monday, 19 January 2004 00:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Stupid is Calum/C-Man right?

stevem (blueski), Monday, 19 January 2004 01:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Shockingly, my name is in fact Callum (with two l's), though I don't know who 'C-Man' is though. I seem to recall someone mentioning there was some other guy called Calum (with one l) on this board though. He isn't me, though. Hurrah for coincidences!

Stupid (Stupid), Monday, 19 January 2004 01:17 (twenty-two years ago)

I liked both (I still do, possibly more teenage music than adult music these days), but I say classic. I suppose it depends on what you consider "pointless teenage music." There's nothing wrong with a kid who has a little perspective and culture.

Xii (Xii), Monday, 19 January 2004 01:21 (twenty-two years ago)

pointless teenage music = nofx or matchbox twenty? they are my official scapegoats for all that is wrong with God.

Ian Johnson (orion), Monday, 19 January 2004 01:22 (twenty-two years ago)

God who likes pointless teenage music: D? 8-)

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Monday, 19 January 2004 01:26 (twenty-two years ago)

I am 16 and I like the Chameleons and Nick Drake. Have I wasted my adolescence?

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Monday, 19 January 2004 01:51 (twenty-two years ago)

I liked Holger Czukay, Eno and Phillip Glass when I was 16, I'm not sure what that says about me...

Trayce (trayce), Monday, 19 January 2004 01:53 (twenty-two years ago)

i listened to jingly jangly stuff. small wonder i had no hair on my chest

the surface noise (electricsound), Monday, 19 January 2004 01:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Curt1s - not all of it! ;)
Trayce - yo sure were born into information/welfare society.

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Monday, 19 January 2004 01:58 (twenty-two years ago)

When I was 13 I liked Eno and Phillip Glass too. (Also David Bowie and Velvet Underground)

A Nairn (moretap), Monday, 19 January 2004 02:01 (twenty-two years ago)

*uncle t''t notices he has stayed up too late and crawls to bed*

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Monday, 19 January 2004 02:06 (twenty-two years ago)

tens who think they listen to important music in any sort of larger context are likely insufferable.

keith m (keithmcl), Monday, 19 January 2004 02:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Trayce - yo sure were born into information/welfare society.

I have noooooo idea what this means *bewlidered look*

(for reference: I was 16 in 1985 and knew nothing about computers)

Trayce (trayce), Monday, 19 January 2004 02:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Wait thats not right... I was 16 in 1987. WTF am I on today.

Trayce (trayce), Monday, 19 January 2004 02:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Well I'm 16 now and my favorite band is The Velvet Underground.
White Light/White Heat is my favorite album of all time.
ummmmmm let's see what else........i guess thats it

Dude (The Yellow Dart), Monday, 19 January 2004 02:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Teenagers who hate pointless teenage music are the worst. I think that a teenager who says that he/she likes neither "hey ma" nor "faint" is a joke.

I also think that listeners of only pointless teenage music aren't the greatest. A mix is definitely the best, but I guess pointless teenage music listeners beat out haters by a couple meters.

Greg M, Monday, 19 January 2004 03:59 (twenty-two years ago)

What if I told you that half of White Light/White Heat and 95% of Captain Beefheart's discography was totally pointless, too?

may pang (maypang), Monday, 19 January 2004 04:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah. Think about it.

may pang (maypang), Monday, 19 January 2004 04:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Teeners who play Captain Beefheart AND pointless teenage music AND go to wild par-tays: CLASSIC
Teeners who play Captain Beefheart AND pointless teenage music AT wild par-tays: EVEN MORE CLASSIC!

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 19 January 2004 04:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Teeners who play them AT THE SAME TIME: our new messiahs, wherever they may roam.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 19 January 2004 04:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Pfft. Mash-ups.

may pang (maypang), Monday, 19 January 2004 04:34 (twenty-two years ago)

No, Charles Ives.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 19 January 2004 04:35 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm 14 & I like nearly everything but what everyone else likes, that gets kinda pointless with my friends but good music is just much more addictive than 3 Doors Down or Holly Valance.

Rachel, Monday, 19 January 2004 04:43 (twenty-two years ago)

It's so hot
I don't need to read Billy Shakespeare
Looks like you have three beaks crow
Meet Juliet or my Volio
The moon was a stone's throw
Feel for once what it's like to rebel now
Stop the show
I wanna break out lets go
I need to say hello
To the crow.
Get out, get out, get out, get out whoo!

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 19 January 2004 04:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Awesome.

may pang (maypang), Monday, 19 January 2004 04:58 (twenty-two years ago)

I've spent most of my teenage years railing against Ja Rule and the stupid people who listen to him. Wouldn't give it up for the world. My favourite silly teen moment was making fun of the girls who came to parties with their Destiny's Child dance routines prearranged!

jole, Monday, 19 January 2004 05:08 (twenty-two years ago)

you were probably not very likeable.

keith m (keithmcl), Monday, 19 January 2004 05:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Man.. what I wouldn't do for a bunch of teenage girls to show up on my doorstep with some prearranged Destiny's Child dance routines.

may pang (maypang), Monday, 19 January 2004 05:12 (twenty-two years ago)

that there's cv polishing material if i've ever heard it

the surface noise (electricsound), Monday, 19 January 2004 05:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Nah man, I was heaps likeable! It was inclusive teasing! My mates and I would just try to do their dance with them. Hilarity ensued.

jole, Monday, 19 January 2004 05:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Patronising adults romanticising the 'pointlessness' of youth through rose-tinted specs: the duddest of all. Everything about it just smacks of that whole 'no rich men in heaven => we rich are serving you by keeping you poor' attitude.

Why is 'hating fun' such a crime around these parts? 'Fun' is for assholes and is no fun anyway.

fcussen (Burger), Monday, 19 January 2004 05:48 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm a long-time lurker in this exact situation. Really now, I think "pointless" is the wrong adjective to use...how can music be/(not be?) pointless anyway?

Anyway, I don’t have any doubts really; if I were a normal hedonistic, MTV watching teenager, I would be really unhappy. I’m pretty content sitting here listening to Beefheart-esque music. (Don’t actually like Beefheart myself though)

Anyway, the fact that the original poster *does* have doubts makes me think that they actually might be happier in someone else’s chair.

lazylurker, Monday, 19 January 2004 06:19 (twenty-two years ago)

I remember when I was 14, I thought I was so cool cause I listened to Eno, Primal Scream, Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, and the Jesus and Mary Chain, and made a point of disliking anything "pop."

I was also insufferable

samuelbloch, Monday, 19 January 2004 08:07 (twenty-two years ago)

*uncle t''t wakes up, rubs eyes*
*reads thread*
*severe senility slightly eased over a good night's sleep, all of a sudden recalls this*

Oi, when I was a nifty whippersnapper aged fifteen - 'twas in the year of nineteen-seventy-five of Our Pointless Teenage Music Loving God Almighty, or thereabouts - I got into a fierce verbal fight with a classmate -
My argument: 'Fuck you, Lou Reed is so much more fun than that endlessly, pointlessly wriggling Yes, for crying out loud!' Him: 'It's exactly the other way round, you moron!'

(Huh, using the words "fun" and "lou reed" in such a contex and in so close proximity - what the hell was I on, malnutrition or sumptin?)

Well where was I anyway... ?
Yeah. Here I am, kind of - but that classmate of mine is dead by now, sadly. Were he still alive I'd (maybe) hasten to tell him that I've come to find no fun wotsoevah in Lou Reed by now, and that I don't think the Yes men were silly tossers all the time. And perhaps I'd even remind him that the records I actually owned in the year of our little argument, which was the year of nineteen-seventy-five of Our Pointless Teenage Music Loving God Almighty, or thereabouts - were a T.Rex, a Sparks, an early Rolling Stones comp, an Allman Bros double (don't ask) and... and that Slade, Sweet and Suzie Quatro...

*uncle t''t rambles on, recklessly, till the night the lights go out in new york city again, eventually *

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Monday, 19 January 2004 09:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Deciding there's stuff you shouldn't be listening to on principle is Dud whatever yr age. That applies whether it's Beefheart or Linkin Park or Destiny's Child or whatever. If I could have my teenage years again I would attempt to not think these things that I did think:

- going to a Fall gig would be a bad idea because it might be violent (???!!!)
- house music is for cool people and should be disdained
- the Wonder Stuff are worth paying attention to

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Monday, 19 January 2004 09:57 (twenty-two years ago)

No, Charles Ives.

I don't know what this was an answer to, Ned, but...isn't that nearly me?!

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Monday, 19 January 2004 13:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Tico OTM about liking/disliking things on principle. However I really don't think regretting your tastes/prejudices at any point is cool either. I think some PSB is in order: "pull those skeletons out of your closet... and come outside!

Jole, Monday, 19 January 2004 13:18 (twenty-two years ago)

isn't that nearly me?!

Woo! You are an avant-garde American composer returned from BEYOND THE GRAVE.
