New Lali Puna Disc

Just heard a copy of the new album, "Faking The Books". Seems to be more of a Notwist influence here - faster songs, more guitars all around. I'm not sure if I like this new direction for them, but if you liked "Left-Handed", the album follows mostly in the same vibrant vein.

Is this on the internet? Have they experimented with their song formula at all, yet? I wish they'd play around with minor chords a bit more...

Melissa W (Melissa W), Monday, 19 January 2004 11:43 (twenty-two years ago)

I am so excited I could run a marathon. Personally I loved Left Handed and the whole general new fangled indieness of what's coming out of Morr. There definitely is a lot of cross-influence going on in what the bands are doing - personally I can hear as much Ms. John Soda in Left Handed as Notwist.

BTW - If anyone hasn't yet picked up the last Ms. John Soda EP then do so do so do so.

Lynskey (Lynskey), Monday, 19 January 2004 13:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Bumpety scump bumperoony. The lack of interest in this makes me want to kill everything and everybody.

Lynskey (Lynskey), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 15:13 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't want to die! I promise I'll try to Seek its Soul this evening.

willem (willem), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 15:24 (twenty-two years ago)

I've been trying. No joy.

Lynskey (Lynskey), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 16:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Is the girl from ms john soda related to the guy from lali puna, they have the same surname?

jel -- (jel), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 17:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Very possibly. The whole Morr scene is a bit like that.

Lynskey (Lynskey), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 18:08 (twenty-two years ago)

: / i'm dying to hear this. their scary world theory is in my all-time top 5 definitely.

i'm gutted i can't find any ms. john soda stuff. i have an mp3 of 'go check' i've almost worn out.

cozen (Cozen), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 19:17 (twenty-two years ago)

i have it. i'll give it a listen and report back.

geeta (geeta), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 23:58 (twenty-two years ago)

do you like lali puna normally geeta?

cozen (Cozen), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 00:01 (twenty-two years ago)

I've listened a couple of times and I don't know, the album isn't really doing much for me yet. Perhaps I was expecting too much after "Scary World Theory". Time to listen to the new Mum then...

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 06:47 (twenty-two years ago)

New Mum?

*feints*

Lynskey (Lynskey), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 14:39 (twenty-two years ago)

what's the new mum called?

mark p (Mark P), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 14:44 (twenty-two years ago)

If anyone else is hankering for a Morr fix I heartily endorse the Guther album.

Lynskey (Lynskey), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 15:09 (twenty-two years ago)

the new mum album is called 'summer make good'.

jason m (jason m), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 15:10 (twenty-two years ago)

has it been leaked yet jason?

mark p (Mark P), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 15:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Mum has leaked, but what I have somehow seems unfinished. Need to listen more before I can intelligently comment. Noticed more vocals than on previous releases.

Ryan WS (fffv), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 18:28 (twenty-two years ago)

I think I prefer Tridecoder to Scary World Theory. I would like to be able to hear the latest Quarks album.

jel -- (jel), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 18:28 (twenty-two years ago)

ha i never noticed that abt them & minor chords before. [melissa how come you don't post more? + i never forgot strictly-speaking to send you tht magazine, i'm just super lazy :( ]

i'm pretty excited about this. my favourite thing of theirs is mebbe still their cover of 'together in electric dreams' which sounds like eavesdropping on a private conversation over a train-station pa.

this is still my favourite music to listen to on the low-level trains into town; it has that motorik insistence which somehow doesn't manage to crowd out all the space in-and-around the songs which insistent things might have a tendency to do: take over attention: background become figure: somehow they manage to elide this: the synths and drums are airy and light: light detonating inside glass.

i like how 'lowdown' starts off a light disco then a slight flex and pop and the song changes its whole shape and colour.

even the instrumentals!

especially the instrumentals!! cf. above.

cozen (Cozen), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 19:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Just got Faking The Books. First impression:- I am a happy man.

Lynskey (Lynskey), Thursday, 22 January 2004 18:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Out on April 5th in Germany, 19th in USA...so maybe the 12th here in Blighty.

jel -- (jel), Thursday, 22 January 2004 18:33 (twenty-two years ago)

someone tell me a good lali puna song I can listen to to get an idea of why you like them.

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 22 January 2004 18:50 (twenty-two years ago)

This is an amazing record. I love the generally upped tempo. Beautiful textures, hooks.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 07:01 (twenty-two years ago)

two months pass...
Awww this album is amazing! So warm and welcoming, like taking two migraleve and going back to bed.

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Thursday, 15 April 2004 13:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Are they worth seeing live? They're playing here in two weeks and I'm a bit hesitant.

Baaderoni (Fabfunk), Thursday, 15 April 2004 14:09 (twenty-two years ago)

dunno, I'd go and see them anyway.

The new one is growing on me, it's not as immediate as Tridecoder. The last song is pretty great.

s1ocki - Fast Forward
