am i right to think "sleeping beauty" falls into this category? and "new steps" and "other voices, other blues"? what else is out there and great?

toby (tsg20), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 09:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Disco 3000. Or is it 2000? Anyway, great side-long synth madness.

Broheems (diamond), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 09:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, and that one with Pharoah Sanders. Which I've never heard, dammit.

Broheems (diamond), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 09:16 (twenty-two years ago)

'strange strings': real mindfuck that one.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 09:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, I was going to say "Strange Strings" too! I believe "My Brother The Wind, Vol.II" (or maybe vol. I - can't recall) is still unavailable. Last time I checked, anyways...

I didn't know he recorded with Pharaoh!

Scott Bloomfield, (who actually really truly shook Sun Ra's hand!), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 09:38 (twenty-two years ago)

did you say anything?

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 14:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Astro-Black. (I haven't actually heard the whole thing, and for that matter I haven't heard anything from it in years, but I trust it to be good based on what I remember hearing and based on hearsay.)

Somewhere I have a list someone else made of Sun Ra albums that need to be reissued.

Rockist Scientist, Wednesday, 21 January 2004 14:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Secrets of the Sun is the one of my favorites. 1965, increasingly spacey and coming apart at the edges, check out the instrumentation on 'solar differentials'.

Seconding 'Disco 3000' and 'Strange Strings', those two are fantastic.

(Jon L), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 19:29 (twenty-two years ago)

are there plans to reissue these or can i slsk them in good faith?

vahid (vahid), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 19:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Don't think this has been reissued -- one called "Playing 'The Satellites Are'". I have it on vinyl in the white sleeve, bought at a show. No date info but it definitely has June Tyson and John Gilmore, sounds liek early '70's. Great stuff.

Nom De Plume (Nom De Plume), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 19:42 (twenty-two years ago)

I really wanna hear Disco 3000.

There are plenty of sun ra albums that need to be reissued.

The Reissue of Lanquidity is all kinds of amazing.

djdee2005, Wednesday, 21 January 2004 19:48 (twenty-two years ago)

vahid- 'strange strings' is on slsk.

It's very crackly but that doesn't matter when the music is good.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 21:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh yeah, I forgot about all those Horo ones (74-76); there is some good stuff on those. Space Probe is supposed to be another good'un, though I've not heard it.

Also there is a pretty common vinyl reissue of Strange Strings floating around. Dunno if it is "semi-legit" or what, but you can buy it at a number of reputable outlets.

Broheems (diamond), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 22:45 (twenty-two years ago)

brg30, that's got to be the list I had, which also, by coincidence, was from the SATURN mailing list (where I mostly lurk, incidentally).

There was an announcement that some of the Horo stuff would be coming out a year or two back, but the reissues didn't materialize.

Rockist Scientist (rockistscientist), Thursday, 22 January 2004 01:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Some of the stuff on that list has been released though. How long ago was that list put together?

Rockist Scientist (rockistscientist), Thursday, 22 January 2004 01:16 (twenty-two years ago)

"Secrets of the Sun", "Strange Strings" are the biggies that have never been released officially. Judging by the two tracks on "Out There a Minute" then "Continuation" sounds pretty good too plus the masters must exist for the tracks to have been released at all. "Astro Black" is supposed to be pretty good too.
