Auf Der Maur - what do you think?

Yesterday I went to see A Perfect Circle live, and the opening act was Auf der Maur, the new band fronted by ex-Hole/ex-Pumpkins bassist Melissa Auf der Maur. This was the first concert of their first tour ever, and it showed: they still seem a bit insecure. It seems Melissa isn't completely comfortable with her new role as frontwoman, but she does have a promising future (especially if she keeps doin' her gigs with 5 inch mini-skirts :). The music is quite appealing (for me), a bit heavier than one would expect; think a bastard crossing between Hole fronted by Kim Deal and a stoner-y Veruca Salt.

So, as the album is due next month, has it leaked? Has anyone heard it yet? Have your say.

JP Almeida (JP Almeida), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 12:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Stupid fucking name.

Silly Sailor (Andrew Thames), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 12:57 (twenty-two years ago)

I've heard it and it's great. Likely to be my one Big Rock pick of the year.

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 13:25 (twenty-two years ago)

I've only heard "Followed The Waves" and I love it a lot.

The Lex (The Lex), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 13:50 (twenty-two years ago)

only heard one track on the radio, thought it was overproduced and ordinary. imagine a female rocker, singing over recycled jane's addiction riffs.

DJ Martian (djmartian), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 13:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Despite arguments to the contrary, my mouth simply isn't big enough to accomodate the yawn that Melissa Auf Der Maur inspires.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 14:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Despite my intense desire for sexual penetration with Melissa Auf Der Maur... that is a shitty single. Sounds like Kate Bush with 1992 style production.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 14:21 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm intrigued but have heard nothing yet, so.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 14:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Her papa, Nick, was great.

Luigi Vampa (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 14:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Alex that's why you're a writer, dood.

ModJ (ModJ), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 16:03 (twenty-two years ago)

I dunno, I prefer Dom's post, myself...

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 16:05 (twenty-two years ago)

I saw her "Black Sabbath" (cough, cough) cover band play a shit bar in brooklyn a couple of years ago...it was terrible.

< c-man > but damn, she looked good dude < /c-man >

Those glasses aren't doin' her any favors.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 16:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, I know... it's kinda loaded, that one...

ModJ (ModJ), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 16:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Great name! C'mon, it's like Van Halen.

scott m (mcd), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 16:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Does Melissa ADM also "dabble in photography," specifically showcasing nude self-portraits? What a narcissist.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 16:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Those glasses aren't doin' her any favors.

Nor the apostrophe.

Great name! C'mon, it's like Van Halen.

Or Bonham. Or Thicke.

rainman (rainman), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 16:41 (twenty-two years ago)

I'D HIT IT!

No, not "narcissist", "philanthropist".

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 16:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Heh.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 16:47 (twenty-two years ago)

The song is ok. The single is streaming at her official site. Sounds more like radio rock than I would have imagined.

scott m (mcd), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 16:48 (twenty-two years ago)

I really wanted to like this more.

For what it's worth, it was the right thing to leave Hole...

ModJ (ModJ), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 16:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Did she leave before or after "Be A Man"? I honestly can't remember.

She was the best thing to ever happen to Hole, as well. The fact that she had stage presence, personality, et al, allowed Courtney to not be forced to the front all the time as usual, and stopped her going insane for a few years.

Where are you now Joe DiMaggio, huh?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 16:51 (twenty-two years ago)

I dunno where he's GONE to...

ModJ (ModJ), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 16:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Wow this is sludgy and good.

ModJ (ModJ), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 16:54 (twenty-two years ago)

I like the sludgy aspect, I wish it was sludgier though. Like High on Fire.

scott m (mcd), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 17:08 (twenty-two years ago)

i saw her live a month ago. she looks great. her music totally sucks. utterly boring. period.

joan vich (joan vich), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 17:23 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm increasingly intrigued, and not just because I love Hole. Must stream the single now.

Jeanne Fury (Jeanne Fury), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 17:36 (twenty-two years ago)

It starts off so well. :-(

aleksandr supertramp (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 17:40 (twenty-two years ago)

It's an alright song, not exactly something I'd turn off if it came on the radio, but also not something I'm likely to load into my winamp and play repeatedly when I'm drunk.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 17:42 (twenty-two years ago)

but it does reaffirm my belief that even the worst nu-metal song can be redeemed at least partially just by putting a chick up front.

aleksandr supertramp (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 17:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Ooh! Idea! JBR -- list some nu-metal songs and choose a female singer who could partially redeem said songs.

Jeanne Fury (Jeanne Fury), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 18:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Shakira "Chop Suey!"

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 18:10 (twenty-two years ago)

ha ha ha Edie Brickell "Nookie"

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 18:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Avril already covered Chop Suey

ModJ (ModJ), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 18:11 (twenty-two years ago)

She looks like an off the map art gallery owner circa 1964. Of course, that may the point.

She also has some fab forearms in that pict too. Basses are heavy, no doubt.

saw her video. she had an exceptionaly ugly dress and a bad hair.
also, girls look stupid when they head bang plaing bass guitar.

that is all.

mrjackhandey (mrjackhandey), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 18:40 (twenty-two years ago)

As opposed to men head banging playing bass guitar. Or head banging in general.

What's the name of that bannd? The new one where the femme lead singer sounds like Courtney Love, but isn't Courtney Love? Just askin'...

The Courtney Love single is pretty good, too.

scott m (mcd), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 19:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Initial impression is that the first two songs on the Auf De Maur record are really very good.

dude, I think you might have some issues.

Actually, I think she was in some Calvin Klein campaign. She was great when I saw her play with Smashing Pumpkins - she hammed it up and did devil signs during Billy's goth vocal only bits.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 22:14 (twenty-two years ago)

also, the single's kinda good.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 22:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Is it me or does that picture of D'arcy upthread make her look like the actress Portia Derossi from Ally McBeal?

Anyway, her cat looks just like my cat!

D'arcy, my favorite bass-playin', crack-smokin', cat-pettin' Smashin' Pumpkin.

I can't believe I actually just admitted to ever watching Ally McBeal.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 23:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, I really hope she keeps wearing 5 inch miniskirts, or 4 inch, but not 3 inch or 6 inch, maybe 7 inch, but not asymetrical hemlines, I really hate that, like what is the point, making your skirt into some kind of statement about abstract art, but in the most irritating way possible. I think art should be generally avoided. If those designers had read all the stuff that various writers have said about not writing in a literary style, maybe they would think again about designing asymetrical hemlines. It would be okay if there was only one or two examples of this in the world, I guess. That's my opinion anyway.

Amity (Amity), Thursday, 22 January 2004 00:02 (twenty-two years ago)

As for the name, I think this name is fine. It reminds me of a Chris Rea album, or the name of a timeshare holiday complex, or a road named by a real estate agent.

Amity (Amity), Thursday, 22 January 2004 00:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Sounds promising, though. If she goes back in the studio with Jim Steinman and has him remix it, I'd totally pick it up.

aleksandr supertramp (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 22 January 2004 08:39 (twenty-two years ago)

I think MADM is pretty cool. I met her once. She related the story of some engineer she had worked with ( was it Eddie Kramer ? Did he work on Hole or Smashing Pumpkins stuff? I dunno) who played her and her bandmates tapes of mixdowns of JUST the Bonham-Jones tracks from a couple early Zep lps. To sort of get them inspired to, you know, "get on the one". Anyway, that story and her enthusiasm kind of made me a fan for life.

Broheems (diamond), Thursday, 22 January 2004 08:54 (twenty-two years ago)

haha TWO different music weirdos have played me those JUST bonham-jones tracks.

Pablo Cruise (chaki), Thursday, 22 January 2004 09:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Auf der Maur is a reasonably cool name. However, Melissa's full name always makes me think of Suzanne Vega's "Marlene on the Wall".

OleM (OleM), Thursday, 22 January 2004 09:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, fuckin-a chaki! get a copy from them!!

Broheems (diamond), Thursday, 22 January 2004 09:12 (twenty-two years ago)

& put it on slsk!

Broheems (diamond), Thursday, 22 January 2004 09:12 (twenty-two years ago)

auf der Maur does indeed sound like it's Esperanto for "on the beach" or something.\

so I've just been offered the chance to interview Melissa f2f tomorrow. As neither a fan of Hole nor someone especially excited by what I think her new material might sound like (I've not yet heard a note, have no slsk or similar right now, and can't get her site to work), should I accept this offer?

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 12:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Tomorrow? I think you just got the interview slot I was rejected for. Cheers Dolly at Virgin PR.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 12:46 (twenty-two years ago)

the first three seconds of, like, all the songs on that album are pretty great. After that... :\

JtM Is Ruled By A Black Man (Jimmy The Mod Awaits The Return Of His Beloved), Wednesday, 1 April 2009 04:33 (seventeen years ago)

so it's always been kind of a big hang up of mine. when I was a kid, I thought it was gross. and I was like, "i wanna be like everyone else. Please take away this red hair." but then throughout the years, I realized it was special. Someone gave me— I think a makeup artist —this scientific explanation that our pigment is fucked up and something we have reacts weird to the sun so freckles are the reaction. sometimes if I'm on mushrooms or something and I look in the mirror, I look green and I feel like there's major yellow. the moral of the story is that supposedly redheads have a wider color spectrum in their skin. there's green, blue, purple and brown in my skin so supposedly we can wear more colors than most people.
