Come on .. You've got too many goddamned records. It's time you start getting rid of some of the chaff. You can't be so attached to material objects like that.

The only way you're ever going to pare them down is by selling them off a little at a time. Let's start with ten this week, and see how we feel next week, nkay?

dave225 (Dave225), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 13:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Starting at the top:

Jack Bruce - At His Best
Best of the Chocolate Watch Band
Dead Milkmen - Bucky Fellini
Dire Straits - Brothers in Arms
Bob Dylan - Saved
Emerson. Lake & Palmer - Pictures At An Exhibition
Family - bandstand
Genesis - Nursery Crime
Jefferson Starship - Modern Times
Kansas - Two For The Show

dave225 (Dave225), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 13:23 (twenty-two years ago)

...by selling them off a little at a time

That sure could work with quite a few titles on *your* DOX list, dave225.
Alas, when I think, with some incredulity, of a few irredeemably dumb and consistently godawful little round things and bigger round things that in various ways have ended up on my shelves... Not only would I miserably fail at finding anyone who'd buy them off me however cheap, I'd never catch a lunatic who'd have them for free.

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 14:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Are these CDs, Dave? B/c you're going to have a hard time selling vinyl of *Nursery Crime* and *Brothers in Arms*. Might as well hold on to them.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 16:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Those were all vinyl.. I know, I'm not going to get shit for them. I know some 20ish hipsters who are just dumb enough to take a Genesis record off my hands though...

I'm trying to get some shelf space back - not make money.

Alex, I'll buy that Third Eye Blind CD off ya.. (just kidding.)

dave225 (Dave225), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 16:19 (twenty-two years ago)

heh. i wish.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 16:20 (twenty-two years ago)

I'll give you $5 for Deadicated (shipping included). Some good songs on that.

Mark (MarkR), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 16:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Space > money > music you don't need/listen to. I'm donating my 200 discs (and about 100 books) to a local arts organization that's having a garage sale to raise funds.

Luigi Vampa (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 16:22 (twenty-two years ago)

I just can't part with mine as easily as Luigi or Alex. I'm only able to get rid of the really shitty stuff. If there's a remote possibility that I'll listen to it again, I can't let it go.

dave225 (Dave225), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 16:26 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm moving, so there's that.

Luigi Vampa (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 16:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Ever find yourself keeping hold of records 'for reference'?

Jim Robinson (Original Miscreant), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 16:29 (twenty-two years ago)

And I'm also semi-pro music writer, so a lot of the CDs I'm getting rid of are actually very shitty promo discs.
Though about a third of them are ones that I've actually bought.

I also have a pile of about 60 (in addition to the 200) that I've set aside because I think I know people who might like certain albums.

xpost

sort of.

Luigi Vampa (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 16:29 (twenty-two years ago)

I just can't part with mine as easily as Luigi or Alex

Who said it was easy? It's like a root canal without anasthetic. But, we need the space...and with the baby on the way, the less stuff cluttering up this place the bettah.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 16:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Also, loading'em all into a big box and lugging them down to a storage space on Varrick Street's no big amount of fun either....to say nothing about trying to sell them. The whole process is a bitch, honestly.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 16:33 (twenty-two years ago)

that's why I'm dumping them on someone else.
I should probably pull a few of the prime ones out and take 'em down to the used record shop and maybe get $80-100, but it's such a p.i.t.a.

Luigi Vampa (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 16:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, I have a fairly big sales list that I've posted here and there from time to time, so obviously I can just spork a random selection from that. Here we go then:

Jason Becker - Perpetual Burn (guitarheroninjaattax. He's good at it. It sucks)
Combatwoundedveteran - I know a girl who develops crime scene photos (every year I buy one fairly straightforward hardcore or powerviolence or whatever album, and end up feeling like a nincompoop for it)
Don Caballero - American Don (and so the schtick got old)
Flaming Lips - Yoshimi Battles Interesting Music
Goatwhore - The eclipse of ages into black (How does someone go from Acid Bath to this tedious garbage?)
Voidoids - Blank Generation (I love Television's debut, so why is this so unimaginably dull?)
Rush - Permanent Waves
Skitsystem - Allt E Skit (see combat...)
Sparks - Lil' Beethoven (I soo wanted to enjoy this, and there's a few catchy bits, but this is just tripe to me. And those synthstrings sound godawful)
Thor's Hammer (Iceland) - From Keflavik, With Love

Øystein H-O (Øystein H-O), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 16:36 (twenty-two years ago)

What's actually going to happen, I fear, is that now that I've successfully chucked them in storage, I'm never going to get my lazy white ass around to actually selling them, and they're just going to sit in there for the next couple of years until we move and I'm forced to do something with them....like donate'em to a church or something.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 16:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Hmmm, probably a lot of stuff from my metal years that's incubating back at my dad's house could go.

Angra - Angel's Cry
Amorphis - Tales from 1000 Lakes
Therion - Vovin
Sieges Even - something or other
Edge of Sanity - that one that's not Crimson
Sentenced - Frozen
Iced Earth - that one a few records ago
Sigur Ros - the one with the fetus on the cover that I listened to once and was bored out of my mind, then gave it to my girlfriend who was bored out of her mind

That was just off the top of my head, I'm sure there are tons more.

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 16:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Hmm, iu think that Amorphis is a pretty fine album; a bit tedious at points, and very samey, but a good listen once or twice a year when the right mood strikes. Elegy is probably an overall stronger album though.

Øystein H-O (Øystein H-O), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 17:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, I got into them with Elegy and just couldn't go back. My Kantele is my favorite thing they ever did though.

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 17:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Alex - I'm sure it isn't easy - but at least yours are quality records. I can only bring myself to sell total shit. I couldn't even dream of getting rid of anything halfway good.

.. and I'm sure a church would love to have your old CDs. But not quite to the point of actually coveting them.

dave225 (Dave225), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 17:44 (twenty-two years ago)

I'll have the Chapterhouse and Sly & Robbie if you want to mail them to the UK, Alex! Does anyone want two Afghan Whigs albums and the 80s Matchbox B Line Disaster record?

Llahtuos Kcin (Nick Southall), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 18:54 (twenty-two years ago)

I would, man, but that involves going back to storage, which isn't a trip I'm planning on doing anytime soon. I'll let ya know when I do, though.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 18:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Wicked. I take back all the stuff about cheese dips and you being stolen by aliens.

Llahtuos Kcin (Nick Southall), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 18:56 (twenty-two years ago)

The fondue place last night was a bit of a let-down, by the way.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 18:58 (twenty-two years ago)

I can't find an even remotely witty reply to that.

Llahtuos Kcin (Nick Southall), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 19:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah Oystein, I'll take your Don Caballero!

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 19:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I'll take the Chocolate Watchband!

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 19:05 (twenty-two years ago)

I listened to American Don again recently and was pleased by how much I enjoyed it still, as opposed to just being impressed by it.

I have three-foot piles on my bedroom floor, two boxes on the landing, the whole space under a coffee table in the front room taken up by CDs. Some of these CDs are absolutely brilliant, but I haven't listened to them in like two years. For someone who gets paid to write about records I am fucking awful at listening to music.

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 19:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Fritz - that's an LP, by the way... But if you want to pay postage or trade me something .. (don't email me because I never check that address. post here.)

dave225 (Dave225), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 19:24 (twenty-two years ago)

god I have 2000 cds and since getting an ipod I've decided I really could live with good mp3s of a good deal of them. I have to do this but am afraid. off the top of my head:

tara jane o'neill: in the sun lines
april march: chrominence decoder
los lobos: kiko
rush: moving pictures
growing: that new one on kranky I didn't like
his name is alive: various eps
dick dale: best of
suzi quatro: some suzi quatro cd I seriously don't think we ever opened
donnas: skintight or whatever it was called

I"m afraid that once I start though I'll wind up getting rid of half my stuff. I did try to pull just 2 cds off of each shelf which would handily give me 60 cds to get rid of and it was getting overwhelming.

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 19:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Now I'm kind of psyched to go back to my dad's house and purge a bunch of cd's to sell.

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 19:42 (twenty-two years ago)

I actually did this the other day — went through my collection and got rid of some stuff I hadn't listened to in ages.
I can't remember everything, but the cull did include a couple of very old Flaming Lips CDs, an old Nick Cave CD, a Chuck Weiss CD, an Oxbow CD, Texas is the Reason's CD, a Sparkmarker record, some Clusone Trio and about 30 other dust gatherers.

Christian Rawk (Christian Rawk), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 20:16 (twenty-two years ago)

i just got another new cd bookcase that (a) appeased the space crunch and (b) was looking bare, so i dumped my sale pile back in with the rest. it was:

... and you will know us by the trail of the dead - madonna (1999)
arab strap - the week never starts around here (1997)
death cab for cutie - we have the facts and we're voting yes (2000)
death cab for cutie - the photo album (2001)
drekka - take care to fall (2000)
the fugees - the score (1996)
lauryn hill - the miseducation of lauryn hill (1998)
wyclef jean - the carnival (1997)
looper - the geometrid (2000)
looper - up a tree (1999)
lucious jackson - fever in fever out (1996)
tool - undertow (1993)
tool - aenima (1996)
tool - lateralus (2001)
tricky - pre-millenium tension (1996)
v/a - chelsea walls (soundtrack) (2002)

andrew s, Wednesday, 21 January 2004 20:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Calabash Case - Calabash Case
Tristeza - Tristeza EP
Appleseed Cast - Low Level Owl: Volume One
Bad Religion - Stranger than Fiction (surprised that I still own this!)
Black Grape - Stupid Stupid Stupid
Converge - Petitioning The Empty Sky
The Cure - Bloodflowers
Live - Throwing Copper
Red Hot Rockin' Hood - Slap On The Radio
U2 - Achtung Baby

Ian Johnson (orion), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 20:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Really? You're ditching Achtung Baby?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 21:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Ian, do you care at all for Converge's Jane Doe? I'm a big fan of that album, but didn't care for the earlier material I've heard by the band, but figured Petition might still be up my alley. I'd love to hear it if you have some comments.

Meanwhile, my list of CDs I want to sell/trade off is over 100 items large, scarily enough.

Øystein H-O (Øystein H-O), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 21:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Chapterhouse - - Blood Music (Ltd.)

Hmmm, yeah, it's a bit bobbins, but the Global Communication "retranslation" is great.

So it has to stay.

Snnap Dragon (snnap dragon), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 22:53 (twenty-two years ago)

I just cleaned out my crap cds before I saw this thread. Funny. Except the cds are now just on my desk. There's In Our Gun-Gomez, Free All Angels-Ash & What Are Rockstars Doing Today?-Magic Dirt. Must get rid of them!!!!!!!

Rachel, Wednesday, 21 January 2004 23:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Sigh, I know I've no intention of folloeing through and actually disposing of them, but for the sake of argument:

Ed Ball, If a Man Ever Loved a Woman
Campag Velocet, Bon Chic, Bon Genre
Tanya Donnelly, Lovesongs for Underdogs
Idlewild, Captain
Liquid, Culture
Manic Street Preachers, This is my Truth
Philadelphia Bluntz, Philadelphia Bluntz
Sepultura, Roots
SMASH, Self Abused
Timeshard, Timeshard

And I've got several years' worth of Uncut magazine cover CDs, but that would be like shooting fish in a barrel.

Except that it wouldn't, and I'd take ages agonising about each track.

Snnap Dragon (snnap dragon), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 23:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Resident Alien - Spacehog
Melvins - Stag
Revolver – Baby’s Angry

Firehose - Flyin' the Flannel
HAH! I'm trying tog et rid of that too! What a pile of blandness that album is.

the surface noise (electricsound), Thursday, 22 January 2004 00:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Really? You're ditching Achtung Baby?

It's scratched to hell; only about three of the songs play. Probably end up throwing it out.

Ian, do you care at all for Converge's Jane Doe?

I love Jane Doe, and if I get rid of Petitioning... it will be the only album of theirs I still have. Petitioning is (mostly) speed metal+hardcore+bad vocals. A few good songs here and there, but I very rarely listen to it.

Ian Johnson (orion), Thursday, 22 January 2004 00:19 (twenty-two years ago)

how much postage on a 1c cd from marie?

mullygrubber (gaz), Thursday, 22 January 2004 00:21 (twenty-two years ago)

i can't quite remember, i bought a whole stack so it wasn't the full amount.. either way i was probably slightly ripped off but what the hell

the surface noise (electricsound), Thursday, 22 January 2004 00:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Alex, please, are these near-mint? (at least, the cd, booklet and back insert) If so, make a price for that lot and check out how much is the postage to get it here to Portugal...

I saw the Global Communication/Chapterhouse disc going for about 40 quid on eBay yesterday.
