Am I right in that there hasn't been a thread solely to discuss Pretty Girls Make Graves?

Good Health spills over with energy and Andrea Zollo yells a lot -- classic

The New Romance is more reserved and Andrea sings horrible lyrics and this album is my biggest disappointment of 2k3 -- dud.

"speakers push the air" and "by the throat" were two of my fave songs of 2002 for sure. i haven't managed to get around to hearing the newie though.

If your album's best song is a sub-minute electroclash track...

Leee Majors (Leee), Thursday, 22 January 2004 07:40 (twenty-two years ago)

I loved the horse eye album cover - but I haven't heard any of their music...

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 22 January 2004 07:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Haven't heard Good Health but I like The New Romance a lot. There are a couple of slightly dodgy songs (especially The Teeth Collector), but All Medicated Geniuses, The New Romance, This Is Our Emergency and Something Bigger, Something Better are all great. They have an interesting sound too - not easy to pigeonhole. It's somewhere between post-hardcore and indie rock really, good stuff.

Awful...i'm just sayin

ddb, Thursday, 22 January 2004 16:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Get Good Health Chris, it's a *lot* better. They also were a lot better live when they were playing songs from Good Health and before; it seemed totally flat when I saw them just before Christmas, although Andrea being on the verge of losing her voice might have had a fair bit to do with that.

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Thursday, 22 January 2004 16:17 (twenty-two years ago)

dud. we had seaweed in 1993, and they sucked then.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 22 January 2004 16:19 (twenty-two years ago)

I like the reserve on the new album. I hated the screaming on the old stuff I heard. The parts that start to sound like Thursday turn me off. I'm a sucker for girls singing in the Lilithian emo style (cf. Rainer Maria, Jen Wood, Rocking Horse Winner, Jejune, Ninetynine, and so on) (and for the love of all that is good if ANYONE thinks I'm trying to call all those aforementioned groups "emo", I'll tell Colin Meeder you called the Hated "pop-punk"). But Leeeee is correct re: the sub-electro track being the high point - more sub-standard housing for jealous lovers please!

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 22 January 2004 16:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Have to ask though, is "Lilithian emo" a term you came up with or is it used by others? I hope you're the only one, frankly.

I used to like them a lot. Now I've thankfully seen the light.

(Sorry Leee)

The second best band named after a Smiths song, behind Shakespear's Sister.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 22 January 2004 21:53 (twenty-two years ago)

i liked "speakers push air" on MP3 from andy's work and bought the 7". i heard the rest of the album and wasn't as impressed. haven't heard anything else. that said "speakers push air" is great, i linked it for jess (the big bully upthread) and i think that's all he's heard. seaweed were hit and miss for me, i was cursed/lucky to only like 2 songs on all of their records.

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 22 January 2004 21:58 (twenty-two years ago)

i liked seaweed too :) "weak" is a top album

I saw PGMG live in London and that was wot ruined it for me...

Screaming girls are the best.

Leee Majors (Leee), Friday, 23 January 2004 01:48 (twenty-two years ago)

(I went through my Lilith phase 5 years ago, I don't want to go back to it esp. if it is filtered through emo.)

Gear! (Gear!), Friday, 23 January 2004 01:50 (twenty-two years ago)

I like Good Health alot...at first I didn't like the new one, but it has grown on me, it's sorta slick new waveyness is a virtue to me now.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Friday, 23 January 2004 01:57 (twenty-two years ago)

I would like the album cover more if I hadn't seen variations of it before (in the Ring most recently, and I'd swear I've seen that exact photo somewhere else).

I haven't heard the old one, but I like most of New Romance. "Blue Lights" is fantastic.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Friday, 23 January 2004 02:04 (twenty-two years ago)

"Speakers Push the Air" was a cool song. That song was the reason I bought Good Health. Haven't heard the New Romance yet, I might get around to it...

latebloomer (latebloomer), Friday, 23 January 2004 03:00 (twenty-two years ago)

three months pass...
I DLed Good Health last night. It has been a while since I have had to stop whatever I am doing while listening to a new record and just sit in between the speakers and listen to it REALL FUCKING LOUD. Today, I can't get it out of my head at work, especially 'speakers push the air' and 'the getaway' which is just a work of genius. Hooray!

hmmm (hmmm), Monday, 10 May 2004 07:26 (twenty-two years ago)

one year passes...
They're mixing the new record now.

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Monday, 1 August 2005 23:51 (twenty years ago)

great news

Hari A$hur$t (Toaster), Monday, 1 August 2005 23:53 (twenty years ago)

hahaha lilithian emo

shine headlights on me (electricsound), Tuesday, 2 August 2005 00:00 (twenty years ago)

one year passes...
i've seen them live twice and they were pretty awful both times. the girl playing keys is very cute though. i remember at the time i wanted to talk to her after the show, but felt a little bit self-conscious and lame just loitering around.

anyway, the first two discs are pretty good. there's quite a lot going on musically - the songs are generally really tightly constructed. 'sad girls por vida' is perhaps my favourite song in their catalogue.
